Anyone digging Orianthi?

Postby Infinity Vocalist 2010 » Thu Nov 18, 2010 3:01 pm

Hey all, I was wondering about anyone's opinon of Orianthi? Now, granted, her hit song "According to You" is a little on the modern pop side, and kinda borders what I'd accept as a classic rock fan, but that woman can play a mean guitar. I mean, no wonder Michael Jackson got her to play for him. It's too bad he died before the tour, she would have melted alot of faces. Anyone who's seen This is It knows what I'm talking about. I didn't think much of her before I saw her playing Michael's music.

Just ran through a bunch of videos on youtube. Not bad at all. I'm sure she'll get bashed on this board for not being goth enough but that's clearly not her thing. I'm sure I heard According To Him somewhere but I can't place it right now. Great song though.

And before the term gets thrown around as a way of deriding music that for some folks is not heavy enough, Power Pop is actually a long standing musical style with a clearly defined sound - jangly guitars, strong hooks and vocal melodies, i.e. The Raspberries, early Todd Rundgren, Badfinger, Big Star, and The Flamin' Groovies in the 70's through Nick Lowe, Elvis Costello and the Attractions, The Knack, Jellyfish, Tommy Keene and Marshall Crenshaw in the 80's. It has nothing to do with what Kelly Clarkson does, or Orianthi, or Halestorm.

Anyway, off my soapbox - liked what I heard of Orianthi and I'm off to Itunes to buy. Thanks for the tip!

No problem man. Yeah, I like some power pop too. Todd Rundgren though, not so much. I much prefer his work with Meat Loaf and any film soundtrack stuff he does (ie. Dumb & Dumber).

Rundgren is definitely an acquired taste but if you have the time, there are some great songs there, and he does rock pretty hard on occasion.

actually, the Noticeboard has discussed her quite a bit since before Michael's death and it has all been quite favorable.

I am a big fan of Orianthi. She's great! She has a nice guitar solo in a new song by FeFe Dobson.

Orianthi's a shredder at heart....I bought her album when it came out a while back, and can't help but think that it wouldn't be so "pop" if the record label wasn't trying to make her so mainstream.
