Steve Perry could log his first top 10 album, as his new Traces may start at No. 6 with around 65,000 units. It’s Perry’s third solo studio album, and his first since 1994’s For the Love of Strange Medicine, which debuted and peaked at No. 15. The former Journey front man released one earlier studio set, Street Talk, which peaked at No. 12 in 1984.

You know the world is going to shit when the likes of Lil Wayne and Lil Baby are higher on the charts than Steve Perry. Ugh.

Steve Perry earns his first top 10 album on the Billboard 200, as his third solo studio effort, Traces, debuts at No. 6 with 73,000 units (72,000 in album sales). The former Journey frontman visited the chart twice previously as a soloist, with his two earlier studio albums: For the Love of Strange Medicine (No. 15, Aug. 6, 1994) and Street Talk (No. 12, June 9, 1984). (While Perry was with Journey, the band notched seven top 10s, from 1980’s Departure through 1996’s Trial by Fire.)

I agree. Its a shame what the music scene has turned into. Lil Wayne and Lil Baby and Gunna, are you kidding me??? Really?

With the publicity and hype alone, Perry should have had a top 4 album...especially with some of the crap ahead of him. Should have went on Ellen and performed :P  :P

A #6 album is still respectable though, especially since even Street Talk back in the day only went to #12. Thought for sure that was a top 10 album.

*Perry's album dropped quite a bit since the debut. Pretty typical, especially of older artists. Haven't received the actual sales numbers yet. On a positive note, "No Erasin" has tied its highest chart position at #20.

Top 20 hit. Dont think it will reach the top 10. He's not really doing much promotion anymore. Maybe with a TV performance, a top 10 is possible.

The album really dropped on Billboard. I honestly thought this was going to be one of the biggest of the year. My eyes have really been opened

1 live appearance would really help. Astonishing though No Erasin has been on the charts for 11 weeks and is still climbing after hovering in the 20's.

There are too many avenues for people to listen to it for free nowadays, rather than purchasing it. Regardless of the sales numbers, it still remains a creatively beautiful collection of personal songs to those who like it, myself included.

Does album sales count digital downloads? I assume so. If not it could reflect the lower sales.
Would have thought it would would do at least as good as FTLOSM which got almost NO publicity with it but he did tour behind it and had a song in somewhat good rotation, at least here in MN, which I assume helped on the sales. But this is when you could walk into almost any store and buy a CD.

Still No Erasin' has almost 3.5M views on VEVO, I wonder if that counts into singles chart?

Yes, streaming is used in billboard chart positions for Hot 100 and albums 200 charts. Here's an article of how Billboard figures out sales and chart positions:

"The Billboard 200 will now include two tiers of on-demand audio streams: paid subscription audio streams and ad-supported audio streams. The chart will continue to not incorporate video streams. The Billboard 200 ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums, and streaming equivalent albums".

Billboard 200 (+ Genre Album Charts) Streaming Services

Service Audio/Video Data Type
Amazon Music Unlimited Audio Paid
Amazon Prime Audio Paid
Apple Music Audio Paid
Google Play Audio Paid
Groove Music Pass (Xbox) Audio Paid
Medianet Audio Paid
Napster Audio Paid
Slacker Audio Paid
SoundCloud Audio Paid / Ad Supported
Spotify Audio Paid / Ad Supported
Tidal Audio Paid

*Billboard does have a "pure album" sales chart, in which Perry debuted at #3. So essentially, if billboard tracked albums the way they used to, it would have been a top 3 album.

Promotion has really fallen off since the release. Honestly, I think this is where radio still plays a part - especially top 40. The promotion that was put into this album was fantastic, but it's also designed to give way to media outlets like radio to help promote the album further, and there's no promotion from radio. While I understand that a great deal of people listen to Pandora or other streaming services through their phone and through their car head units, you still have radio that's played all day at many offices, such as dentist offices, doctor offices, restaurants, etc...and many people tune into radio in the morning for morning shows and those shows still play music.

Having said all that, I think radio still has a stranglehold on music promotion, and their constant rotation is what gets these songs in people's heads. For instance, every time I'd stop by the gym for a quick workout, they would have the radio on one of the local top 40 stations, and no matter when I would stop in to workout, that same song from that girl who dated Justin Bieber would be playing. No matter if I liked the song or not, that song gets in my head from so many times I have heard it - and that's the power of radio.

So, I think these older artists still need radio to promote. You can only push YouTube and streaming services so much, but the consumer is either going to press play or not. They don't always have that choice with radio, they'll sit through the song because they have no choice (well they could turn the radio off if it's in their car) and they hope a better song is played next. All those years during the 90's when I would still listen to the radio in hopes they would play a track from Steve's FTLOSM album or Journey's TBF - and when they did, it was like listening to gold! But, I sat through a lot of "90's" new rock and pop. Funny thing now is, when I hear some of that 90's new rock and pop, I realize I liked the music after all!

I agree radio plays an important part in the promotional realm to an extent. The hard part- radio has little to no interest in playing legacy/legendary artists. Even top artists like Paul McCartney are having trouble getting radio to really support and stand by new music. Radio will play new singles from these artists, but it will be twice a day at 12 am and again at 3am when NOBODY is listening. After the initial promotion from radio, the songs don't make regular rotation and pretty much disappear into radio space. I believe McCartney's new Album Egypt Station has already dropped out of the Billboard 200 Albums charts. Haven't heard any of his new singles on radio either.

As I stated previously, Perry should have went on a major talk show like Ellen and performed a single live. It's definitely not too late either. In fact, Journey performed on Ellen and Oprah with Arnel well after Revelation was released. This helped the album consistently sell for nearly a year. Yes, the hype and story of Arnel helped, but performing live on talk shows are a HUGE promotional tool. People want to hear the artist perform the single live, not just do interviews and talk about the album/singles.

After 14 weeks its still #21.
Is there just not that many AC songs?
How can a song with little airplay stay on a chart for 14 weeks?
I am glad though for him.

Saw there was 2-3 holiday songs on the chart. Would be cool for him to release one.

Wondering if we will hear from him anytime soon.

On a side note listened to Traces in full in my car. With my good BOSE speakers I heard a lot of nuances (good), especially his voice and the drums. Don;t know why I listen to good music on a cheap MP3 player. :?
Really got into 3 of the "bonus songs" Angel Eyes is probably my fav but the two after that are sounding better and better. Specially Call on Me.

Radio is useless... because its DEAD. Online streaming is the new radio.

Perry would be better served by getting his tunes in regular rotation in grocery store loops (most stores now use pre-recorded loops)... after all his demo is boomers.

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
