Solo Songs You Want To Hear Live

Both Luke and Joe W have promised to perform solo material at the upcoming TOTO Dogz tour. Of their repertories, what songs do you want to hear?

For Joe, I'd love to hear "Yeah yeah yeah" from This Fall (link below). The interplay between JW and BK on this song always made it sound like TOTO to me anyway. May as well do Goin Home as well, since that tune is also both TOTO and JW solo.

As for Luke....man, I'd love to hear Twist the Knife and Never Ending Nights. Too many to choose really.

Between those 2 ? Too many to choose man. Honestly they could do more of their solo stuff and sprinkle in a few Toto cuts instead of the other way around.

I'd like to hear some of these tracks (including Toto) :

1. Twist The Knife
2. Swear Your Love
3. The Letting Go
4. Hate Everything About You
5. Yeah Yeah Yeah
6. This Fall
7. Man In Me
8. Anna
9. Mad About You

I agree that "Yeah Yeah Yeah" would be an excellent choice, but I'd much rather hear Lukather tear into the original version of that song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtekxKPlo1I. "If I Seem to Wonder", as it is originally called, was written and recorded for Joseph's and his brother Mark's duo project in 1990-1991. This project was never completed, but I think most of the songs from it have wound up in one version or another on JW and Mark Williams solo albums. Anyway, Mark once described how the their version of "If I Seem to Wonder" had him singing the verses and Joseph belting out the chorus. I guess his own version (link above) is pretty much the same as the Williams Bros. version, only with Mark singing the entire thing.

As for other songs, the Joseph Williams solo catalogue is full of songs that deserve a live airing (and some occasionally did when Joseph used to hit the road with Jay Graydon and Peter Friestedt):

Dirty Little War
Out of Harms Way
One Imperfect Heart
Top Down Girl (cringeworthy though the lyrics are)
Man in Me
This Fall
What is She Hiding
I Didn't Do It
And pretty much everything off of his latest record.

Lukather's catalogue is equally impressive, and I'd love to hear some of these live.
Twist the Knife
Darkest Night of the Year
Born Yesterday (hey, there's a sax player in the Toto live band...)
Broken Machine
Always Be There for Me
Reservations to Live
The Letting Go
Ever Changing Times
You'l Remember
Last Man Standing

I haven't spent as much time with Joseph's solo albums, but I imagine between the two of them, there's enough gems in each's solo back catalog to form the basis of a 'new' Toto album.

I question whether they're allowed to record as Toto (otherwise why put out two simultaneous solo albums when they could've been combined and gotten much more attention?), but if that got sorted out, it'd be an interesting and easy project to put together, especially since both their back catalogs are spread out among labels and not super easily accessible or available anymore.

Like, they both have new solo albums to promote, and still have to play all the Toto stuff, so I don't see them digging out stuff from Candyman or I Am Alive or any of those albums, honestly. But revisiting some of them with the new band would be a fun exercise and way to get the cream of that crop back out into the world.

I'd like to believe that Luke and Joe have more integrity than that. Some of the material (Liberty Man especially) is TOTOish. But much of it stands on its own.

Whether they can record new stuff.....the livestream is being released by Mascot without any issues. So we will see.

A pic was posted last month of Paich, Joe, and Luke together. Prolly just a casual hang, but wouldn't it be something if they wrote a few new tunes?

I think Paich is also working on his first solo record, which both Luke and Joe are also involved.

That is one record I am really looking forward to. Paich is a brilliant keyboardist. Love the guy.

For all their talent and brilliance I still think some of the Toto guys are underrated in certain respects.

I think Paich is a very underrated singer (I think he even underrates himself). I know he would love to venture vocally down the 'Spanish Steps of Rome' road and I would love to hear that. But as we have also heard over the last decade, he still has higher range left in those pipes. In short, I really hope he does a vocal album.

Joe Williams is a vastly underrated songwriter. I think some of his songs, especially on his solo albums are almost criminally overlooked, and he's even written some gems that have somehow never been released. Magic really does happen when songwriting talents such as Joe and Paich join up, and I hope they did for Paich's solo album.

Could be. I remember an old interview - I think around the time of Mindfields - Paich said something to the effect of "if I'm writing, I'm usually writing for TOTO."
He was such a prolific beast on the very early albums. I guess I'm selfish and want to see the band continue to record into the future.
