Jeff Porcaro Catalog Sold for $30 Million

Postby Onestepper » Sat Nov 20, 2021 12:09 am

Music publishing corporation Primary Wave has confirmed the purchase of late Toto drummer Jeff Porcaro’s catalog in a deal Billboard said was worth $30 million.

The arrangement includes master royalties on all of the albums Porcaro performed on with the band, as well as his share of the rights to Toto's signature hit “Africa,” which Porcaro co-wrote.

Wow.

This is obviously also another way of making sure that someone with strong corporate interest (maybe even stronger than someone married to a billionaire) will perpetually remain on Toto's a$$ses to make sure that each little penny according to whatever court settlement or verdict was reached will be deducted from the band's income. I might even be inclined to personally think that this may well have been as much a motivation for the transfer of Jeff's catalogue as the preservation of his musical legacy. But then again who knows.

I don't know his widow, but as a fan and an outsider she seems to be a bitch and all about the $$$$.

I would count out any Jeff Porcaro co-write bar Africa from Toto's setlists (let alone releases) from here on. I wouldn't blame the band for not wanting to shell out more royalties to this lot than they absolutely have to.

There's some great stuff co-written by Jeff though: Hydra, English Eyes, Afraid of Love, We Made It, Carmen, Stranger in Town, Mr. Friendly, Holyanna, Moodido, Dune, Take My Hand, We Can Make it Tonight, Fahrenheit, Somewhere Tonight, Mushanga and pretty much all of Kingdom of Desire.

It certainly appears that most of the passive aggressive (and some not so) statements made by Steve about her are pretty accurate.

They can play anything live and it wouldn't affect anyone's royalties or paychecks. Now if they decided to do yet another live release, sure, but...wouldn't be tough to just edit out those songs from the album anyways.

Of course it would. For obvious reasons songwriters are nominally entitled to royalties from live performances. But it requires a lot of paperwork (to say nothing of the work required to keep track of what's being performed by a particular act) and amounts to, in the words of one rather prolific songwriter, spending dollars chasing cents. But I am thinking that this company may be prepared to do just that are cents may well turn into dollars.
