Of course I like the song, a lot! Nice to hear JY out front at the beginning on this one. It has all the Styx elements you could ask for and more with a couple of clever left turns! Oh, and the Queen element is prevalent at toward the end. Can’t wait for this album!

The comments are turned off on YouTube. After listening I can see why. Contrary to what you said It’s not nice to hear JY up front when he sounds like this. Who’s singing second Gowan? When people have accused Tommy’s Styx as just being a cover band I didn’t realize it would be a Queen cover band. Why on earth would they do that?
Why would they try to sound like Queen and have Gowan channel Freddie Mercury?
You criticized the harmonies on Misanthrope and yet you claim to like this? You have zero credibility.

I didn’t criticize the harmonies on Isle. That was someone else. I criticized the staccato which DDY uses in every other song. Crash Of The Crown is a great STYX song. Enjoy your new DDY and I’ll enjoy the new Styx album. Nothing wrong with that Suite. It’s nice you took the time to listen to the new Styx song. Too bad you didn’t like it.

Queen cover band? Let’s see, who copied a Beatles album cove, used a Beatles song title, and ripped off a Beatle riff?? Oh, that’s right, it’s DDY!

I guess I should really go back and listen to both Isle and Crash again.

First impressions on both though? On Isle, Dennis sounds fantastic as usual, until the chorus hits and you hear Suzanne in the mix. Ruins it. The song itself? Strang choice for first "single". The video? Dear God - PURE CRINGE.

As for Crash - Umm wow. It was really unexpected, but not sure what they were really trying to accomplish with it. Larry's and Todd's work really stands out, as well as Gowan's verses. The rest of it was a hot mess.

Verdict - for the first time in ages I can say that I don't care for either track. That's a first for me. Both fell flat.

I think both of these live would go over like a lead balloon.

Let's just hope that once the feedback for both of these songs is out there the 'next' releases will be something that will make the majority of us go "Why The Fuck didn't they release this first?" Ie "These Are The Times, Radio Silence, To the Good Old Days etc"

Not sure what else to say.

I agree, this first track from Styx left me a bit underwhelmed. It's OK but not great. With saying that, I kind of felt the same way about Gone, Gone, Gone. A good song, but not great. There are other songs I like on The Mission much better. It will probably be the same for Crash Of The Crown. When I read JY would be on vocals I was hoping for more of a rocker. This tune is OK to me but not great.

Also, looking at the track listing the longest song is 4 minutes. A couple are a minute or less.

Still excited about it and preordered clear vinyl. Willing to bet the rest is good or better than the title track.

Same, Im excited about anything Styx. I preordered the clear vinyl also.

I need to listen to the song a few more times. 1st though was the song is all over the place. I can definitly hear Will,s production on this. Sounds alot like Mission. And I agree on the Queen sound. Not a fan of Styx doing it. I really hope the album has a few strong rockers on it. But I do like Gone, gone gone better. Tommy is trying really hard to go prog.

I do like Isle better.

On first listen, I find it rather interesting and want to check it out again. I am annoyed with the early 70's ELP synth and the Queen rip offs. Why? The synths are so dated. They could easily replace both those sounds with something more Styx sounding or maybe even modern elements and make the song as interesting. It comes off as lazy to me and rather baffling. Overall though, besides those annoyances I do find the song interesting.

Wow, Styx sounds like Queen and Gowan can channel Freddie Mercury. Those are huge compliments coming from somebody who compared them Alvin and the Chipmunks in the past. AWESOME!

Crash Of The Crown"

See the waypoint
On that distant blue horizon on the ocean
At that place of real tranquility's devotion
Where I see my life one day with you

I'll be waiting
When you step toward the edge I will protect you
The perils of the world will not affect you
I'll be there to take that dance with you

I know where I'm bound
It won't weigh me down
With the crash of the crown
When it falls to the ground

I know where I'm bound
It won't weigh me down
With the crash of the crown
When it falls to the ground

And now we know what must be done
We'll send a message out to everyone

All you sinners
All you saviors
All you villains
All you heroes

Are you ready?
Can't you see what lies before us tomorrow?

There's no denying
The truth will be the light
Through the darkness tonight

Till the walls come tumbling down

CS. It’s clear that C stands for corporate and S for sales for Tommy’s Styx. I went back and saw how many times you posted on the Mission thread and I was overwhelmed by what could only be described as a PR blitz, you are not simply a fan.
The subject matter and lyrics of A Kingdom Ablaze appears to have been studied by whoever wrote the Crash Of The Crown.
Kingdom is meaningful lyric poetry
Crash is indecipherable lyric puppetry.
See for yourself............

A KINGDOM ABLAZE

With the kingdom ablaze
We averted our gaze
By hiding our eyes
When the pillars came down
We heard not a sound
from the city of lies
Nero's sang the same song
they'd been singing
While hero's shot in vain
their arrows slinging
Then the king and his knaves
The fools and the slaves
Kept pouring our wine
And we knew we should stop
But we drank every drop
Every grape from the vine
Barren grew the land
between the oceans
And sorcerer's could not conjure
magic potions
Chorus
House of cards cried the child
We are tribes running wild
It was you it was me
It was us can't we see
When our greed become
our need all will bleed
So we musn't blame fate
When fools legislate
Without out any plan
And we dare not ignore
The devil in store
From the nature of man
The future lies in state
With tragic endings
While we still contemplate
Our happy endings
House of cards
Cried the child
We are tribes running wild
Was it you was it me
It was us can't you see
Who cares if the stars and sun don't shine
I 've got mine
Ubi est mea
Deus est pecunia
Chorus
House of cards
This malaise
Shall we dance
A kingdom ablaze
Was it me was it you
It was us
True is true
Who cares if rivers turn to brine
I've got mine

A Few Thoughts On The New Styx Song Crash Of The Crown
MAY 11, 2021 ~ TROY T.
To be honest I do not know what to expect from the upcoming Styx album Crash Of The Crown. This will be the follow-up to their highly successful album The Mission (2017). When I say “successful” I do not mean in terms of records sales. The days of a Styx album selling three million copies are long gone. I mean successful in terms of quality. For my money The Mission is one of the band’s best albums. It is a triumphant return to the sound, style and quality of their glory days in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. I am sure that I am not the only fan that feels this way. Can the band produce a satisfying follow-up album? Based on the recently released song Crash Of The Crown the prospects look extremely promising.

Crash Of The Crown is full of surprises. The song features James “J.Y.” Young, Tommy Shaw and Lawrence Gowan on lead vocals. I was expecting to hear a song featuring Tommy Shaw on lead vocals. Hearing all three sing lead on one song is a pleasant surprise. There are moments where the lush harmony vocals evoke the sound of Styx from the 1970’s mixed with a touch of classic Queen. Just to reinforce the Queen influence there are a few musical moments towards the end of the song that seem reminiscent of Queen circa 1975.

The musicianship is stellar throughout. Lawrence Gowan’s keyboard and piano playing throughout the song are exceptional. He adds progressive rock and classically inspired touches that add depth and drama to the music. Todd Sucherman is an absolute powerhouse behind the drum kit. His precise and groove filled drumming keeps the song moving through various musical motifs. The song seamlessly flows from classic rock to progressive rock to bluesy rock and back. The efficient guitar work of Young and Shaw is highly melodic and what Styx fans have come to expect from the pair. Ricky Phillips lays down solid basslines helping to give this rocker a strong musical foundation. The band manages to pack a great deal into three minutes and forty seven seconds.

After listening to Crash Of The Crown several times I will say that I am excited to hear the rest of the album. I still am not quite sure what to expect. Surprises and the unexpected are a good thing. Whatever the new album brings I am looking forward to experiencing it. When one of your favorite bands, especially in the midst of a changing music scene, creates new music that is a good thing. Styx spent many years, seemingly content, playing the hits in concert. I applaud the band for creating new music and enhancing their already rich musical history.

I like this song even after hearing it many times. Honestly, I didn't like the Mission at all. Found it bland. I only listened maybe 5-10 times hoping it would catch on, but it never did. I certainly seemed to be in the minority so maybe I am missing something. Really like this song though, looking forward to the album.

This song is a major disappointment, I don't get it, and the mix is really muddy sounding too. Tried listening to it 4 times, not clicking. If going off this one song this maybe the first Styx album I don't buy. I'll wait for the 30 second clips to appear first, and I'll give my full review.

I’ve decided to give my review of this new Styx album early and it’s based on just the song titles. This is the best and greatest Styx album ever! You’re welcome!

Song & JY sound way better with headphones. When they all are singing together it sounds like a combo of ELO’s Don’t Bring Me Down & Queens Killer Queen. Not huge fans of either group and I don’t like the group sound of Styx in this song at all.

I ABSOLUTELY loved The Mission & Cyclorama but the group sing in this song as of now I don’t like at all. Sounds nothing like the Styx I love.

It's pretty sad to me that a legendary group like Styx has to sound like ELO, or Queen and forever reason can't sound like themselves.

So I have listened to this many times and I do not hear ELO, Queen or ELP. Maybe that's just me. The organ part early in the song reminds me of early Styx like something from the first album. I can hear all 3 lead vocalists in the song.

Really, not a bad song, but not a great song. But that's how I felt about Gone, Gone, Gone. The rest of The Mission was better as a whole album and this may be too.

Bottom line - I am just happy to be getting new music from both camps. It's just like 1986 all over again! 5150 and Eat 'Em & Smile.

There should be enough new music to go around for all of us to be happy and get along around here.
