Is Everything OK With JY? (Seriously!)

Postby RumTumJM » Thu Feb 06, 2025 7:06 am

Is everything OK with JY, these days? - Seriously.

During current shows, he seems to just be lollygagging around on the stage. Yes, he does many of his signature solos. But, compared to past years, he doesn't seem to be doing nearly as much as he used to do: Miss America isn't in every show. Will was playing many of the dual guitar parts with Tommy during the recent Grand Illusion shows. It sure seems like he isn't contributing much to the harmonies.

Now, don't get me wrong...I LOVE the fact that he's still there (and...against what many have said...he hasn't been pushed out)! It wouldn't really be Styx without JY! Plus, I know that he recently lost his wife, and I'm sure he's dealing with a lot, personally. But still, he seems like he's really slowed down a bit, and I can't help but wonder if all is ok. (To be honest, while I don't want to see it happen, it really wouldn't shock me if he did step aside from the band in the next few years.)

Here's how I see it. As the band members age so do their fans. JY is moving around. It might be that your old ass eyes are just missing it. It blows getting old.

Considering that I am turning 37 next month, I hope that my eyes haven't aged THAT much, yet! HAHAHA! - With that said, I have seen the band perform 21 times in the past 19 years. So, I feel like I have a good sense of how their live shows have been & are.

(I mean that in more of light-hearted way than a snarky/nasty way.)

You know I'm BSing you. I heard the same thing about Dream Theater's lead singer James Labrie. What if James isn't actually sounding bad live sometimes, instead its just the majority of Dream Theater fans having old fuc king ears?? Also, for the record I've seen Styx, Dennis live, Tommy live + Damn Yankees upwards of 30+ times. Their show last summer with the band calling themselves Foreigner & Jon Waite was fantastic. Gowan steals EVERY show.

He's just getting old, he's 75 years. I mean look at Chuck when he pops out... some people think he doesn't even play his bass.

Does JY sound good singing Miss America still and does he still play well? Then it's all good :)

He has said in the past that he'll keep performing until he's not able to. It's hard to imagine Styx in 5 years with 80 year old JY and 76 year old Tommy.. Gowan will be 73, Todd will only be 60... Will 57.. I don't know how much younger Terry is to Lawrence... Chuck will be 81.

JY needs to embrace his thinning hair and stop with the hats :P

All good man! It made me chuckle!

I just never been called old before. And, when you consider that I'm among Styx's younger fans, I had to respond in some way! HAHAHA! (No offense to any of you who saw the band in their heyday! I wish I could have been around then!)

JY is doing pretty darn good for a 75 year old man. I hope I am as active as he is when I’m 75. DDY is the one we should be asking about. He has been MIA for over a year. I may need to contact Visiting Angels to get an update!

Embrace his thinning hair? Who on earth would do that ? I started out just like JY when my hair started thinning. If JY follows my plan he should go 5-7 years with hats, followed by the next 3 with a hockey helmet and then the next 5 with a football helmet. That will have him playing well into his 90’s. I hope to be there for his final gigs.

By then, I’ll be the one wearing a motorcycle helmet or a Chum Bucket.

Saw two of the album jacket photos of JY from their upcoming album Circling From Above. In one of the photos he's wearing a Chicago Black Hawks hockey helmet, in the other a Sponge Bob Chum Bucket. This dude is gonna rock into his late 80's at a minimum. LONG LIVE STYX!!!

That might be the Styx post of the year!

Although, it might be cool if he wears the chum bucket on stage, when he sings Snowblind. It might create a vocal effect that sounds like the original recording!
