Looking ahead to 2024

Postby ChicagoSTYX » Mon Sep 25, 2023 2:41 am

Any guesses on what will be happening with Styx in 2024? My guess would be a new album (already in the works) and a tour in the UK. Also an outdoor shed tour of the US to promote the new album with 2 other bands on the bill. DDY comes out of his basement and sees his shadow, hunkers down again. Nothing happening with DDY in 2024.

If an album comes out, I will say it will be later in the year. Late summer at the earliest, probably fall or even winter, like October or November. Then an indoor mid-sized venue tour with one of the standard bands in the winter and early spring, followed by a larger summer tour next year. I would hope they take the first part of next year and concentrate on the album.

Dennis will do an interview where he says he's not very interested in touring any longer. But, he would absolutely join Styx for a reunion tour. Getting everybody's hopes up for a reunion yet again. I also would not be surprised if he revisits Hunchback in some way.

Only thing I will add is I’m guessing this will be JY’s last album & tour with Styx. With that said I’ll also predict that the last 2 shows will be in Chicago. For those shows JY with the blessing of the entire current Styx will invite Dennis back to perform with them. Dennis will accept. Dennis will join current Styx for JY’s last two shows.

I say no album in 2024, and it will be 2025. I also think the package tours are drying up, so it will be another round of casino and state fair circuit in 2024. Which is good news for fans, the package tours are dreadful with 70 min set lists for the headliner. and 40 min set lists for the "special guest" bands. As for DDY, who knows if we will see him or not, he turns 77 this January, never know with the 7's and Styxlore. He might be retired, most 77 year olds are. I wouldn't be suprised to see a song released by him in the near future though, he more or less said he would still release music in the future but it would be just songs.

Hoping Styx will leave the U.S. next year. I still think it's terribly silly they advertised a "World Tour" this year and never left the states.

Just a month or two ago Tommy said they've got half an album's worth of songs written and are just waiting to get into the studio (e.g. recording sessions over the winter during their tour break) so I wouldn't be surprised if they do a June/July album release to go along with their next tour.

JY has stated multiple times that he will be performing until the day he dies or physically can't do it anymore - Maybe he'll get some bigger hats but I don't see him retiring anytime soon (BTW - Dennis made a comment about JY and his hats in a recent FB post... which kind of confirms that he's still 'stalking' them :P)

Dennis hasn't announced anything himself - but the company that just bought up his publishing rights have stated he intends to tour next year (I would figure if he was 100% against it, he wouldn't have let them post that)

I know COVID paused things briefly for the band but I'm still perplexed over the whole "our 50th anniversary is going to be huge, lots of awesome things are happening" and then literally nothing happened outside of a generic tour of the U.S. and a few shows in Canada.

It's also disappointing that Mike Mettler has disappeared and the band seemingly hopes that nobody will remember him because he was acting inappropriately with female fans (that's the rumour I heard - I have no proof of this)... now it seems we might never get an official biography of the band because of whatever happened with that guy.

I hope DDY does tour, if he were to do a show near me, I would go. I have a feeling that his voice may not have held up especially since he has not toured in about 4 years. That may be one of the things holding him back. Also, he hates touring.

I honestly was not too hopeful about Mettler's Styx bio. How objective could it have been? What he did write about the band were OTT puff pieces that I found difficult to read with a straight face. I don't think he could have written an open, honest, complete history of the band. He would have needed to interview DDY for his perspective and I don't see him giving Mettler that kind of access. Since he seems to follow the band, DDY has to know how pro-Styx Mettler is. Just my opinion. But~~Sterling Whitaker has stated on Fb that he is slowly working on an update to his book. He said he has new interviews he's excited to share.
Sometimes it makes no sense at all.

Another prediction I will make is that I think JY will be much more involved in the new album. Things have drastically changed in his life since Crash Of The Crown and I’ll bet he’ll have a lot more input on the new album.

I agree with this. In fact, t think Tommy should look towards JY and encourage him to be more expressive...and don't let him isolate too much. It seems to me that when eventful things happen in Tommy's life, he expressed them in his songwriting. If they truly are friends he should sit down and write with JY and get some his life drama out...it could be therapeutic in a way, and some awesome songs could come out of it. Tommy obviously sorta clicks with Will.....but he has done the same with JY in the past. I think it would be great for JY personally, Tommy and JY's friendship, and for Styx as a band.
