First, let me say the Jim Peterik has co-written some of my favorite songs of all time. I've given the whole album two listen throughs and here's my opinion:
There is no hint on this album of the genius he displayed while with Survivor. I don't understand how Survivor fans keep giving this album high marks. If I wasn't such a big fan I would have stopped halfway through the album on the first listen but I stuck it out for two rounds.
There was not one song on this album that connected with me like so many of the Survivor Reach songs after even just one listen. My wife, also a Survivor fan felt exactly the same way. She really wanted me to turn off this album after about 4 songs. His voice doesn't carry any of the songs, and like his own lyrics once said, "It's the Singer Not the Song."
I know I'll get pummeled for this, but I have to speak my peace. I was so looking forward to this album and it was truly the biggest let down for me. I couldn't hum or sing one hook or lyric even after two listens. This thing was completely unlistenable and will now just take up space on my CD shelf.
His best work was and always will be the writing he did with Frankie in Survivor. It seems, unfortunately that those days are over for good.
