Frankie Van Halen?

Postby Red13JoePa » Wed Jul 26, 2006 12:37 am

Back in '04 when the band was still in perpetual "We're working on a new album, gonna be out REAL soon" mode FS made a post on the site about going to a Van Halen (who happened to be touring at the time) show in LA.
It went on and on in all the usual over-the-top hyperboles he always uses about how great it was to see EVH back on the stage doing his thing and how ecstatic the crowd was and how he loved EVH's stage presence and crowd interaction..... it was huge love sonnet to that version of VH the band (ironic b/c we've learned in hindsight that it was dysfucntional as fuck) and EVH.
Unwritten was the seeming implication of "That was us/me at one time and it should/will be again" Laughable (and delusional) b/c they were never VH level commercially.

It strikes me to wonder if in his zeal to be EVH if he has not adapted EVH's megalomaniacal and self destructive control approach to his band.

If anyone can find that posting, bring it over because you had to see it to believe it.

I don't have that posting, but this seems like deja vu all over again.

You are spot on with the comparison to EVH's "megalomaniacal and self destructive control approach to his band."

I've heard that Reach was completed and ready for release LONG before 2006, but someone wasn't happy with the sound and a lot had to be re-recorded and remixed (more than once).
It's not like Reach was the second coming of Dark Side of the Moon, but when fans are told that "the album is done, it's coming out soon" and then it doesn't surface, it's rather disappointing. A couple of weeks or months of delay is understandable, but when those months turn into years, I questioned whether or not there really was an album, or if that was just more smoke up the @$$ to keep the band relevant.

Sorry, dude, that we don't have Bud Light jingles to rejoice to.

Dude I guess I just don't get the point of ripping on Frankie. Frankie's an intense guy. Jimi's aloof. They are just two different people. I just wish people like Sheryl and the Jimi camp would just let it go. Go enjoy a slo gin fizz at Jimi's nightclub.

You like the nightclub joke?

Maybe JJ can hire Dave to come in and sing the Bud Light jingles right there at the club you keep poking fun at. He could use Bickler to move more BL and bring profit in. :D

Does anyone know the name of Jamo's club? Is his group going to play there?

HEY! WHAT IS YOUR F*#KIN PROBLEM DUDE! Don't be rippin on Dave! At least Dave can laugh at them all, he's making VERY GOOD money. A HELL OF ALOT MORE MONEY THAN JAMO! At least Dave has class. He didn't leave the band and go out and sing Survivor songs and start a band and call them Survivor, just to make money. At least we are HEARING DAVE ON THE RADIO today unlike someone who we never hear anymore! Don't be such a jerk!

I'm no more of a Jimi fan than I am a Survivor fan...I'm just commenting on the band situation as it stands now...regardless of the lead singer.

In all honesty, Survivor has been little more than a blip on the radar screen of AOR in the last 20 years. They've toured here and there during that time, but the fact that they released 1 album in the last 18 years doesn't help much. That's why I'm not getting too excited when I hear that a new album is expected for a 2007 release. (Guns 'n Roses--Chinese Democracy, anyone??) I just don't understand where Frankie thinks that bigger and better things are possible now with Jimi out of the group.

I'm a huge fan of BOTH Jimi Jamison and Dave Bickler, and I'm a huge Survivor fan period.

I have had conversations with both Jamison and Bickler and their both great guys, and obviously two of the greatest singers out there!

I'm a huge fan of Frank Sullivan's guitar playing and sonwriting.

I know for a fact that both Frank and Jimi have made some HUGE mistakes in the way that they have handled things with each other, and for anyone to deny that would just be ridiculous.

So far both Jimi and Frankie seem to be being fairly civil in their comments about each other. Let's hope it stays that way!

Like I said in another post of mine, my advice to both Jimi and Frank is to not burn any bridges with each other or any other former band members!!!

I've had enough of these stupid Steve Perry VS Steve Augeri wars on Journey boards, let's not have any stupid Jamison VS Bickler wars on here, please?!?!

Hopefully Survivor will live up to their word that they will try to have a new album out in 2007!!!

Hopefully Jimi Jamison will have another solo album out in the near future!

And hopefully Dave Bickler will eventually release a solo album of his own!

And hopefully someday we will see Survivor be really smart and have a real reunion, and we will see Jamison, Bickler, Sullivan, Peterik, Droubay and Ellis all do a new album and tour together!!! :D

Maybe they can even include Robin McCauley in on it?

When I saw this trend I thought you were commenting on the LONG guitar solos of Frankie. And the ego that goes into those.

When I think about it there are many comparison's between the two.

Lot of psychoanalysis on boards lately

Personally I think whichever you look at it, Survivor is now Frankie's band or has been since JP got off the ship. At the same time his guitar work speaks for itself and this so called "indulgence" by him, is natural. Ofcourse when JJ had his band, carrying the name that did not belong to him (he also realizes this I think (emphasis on I THINK)) is performing with his band on with his name clearly (no Jimi Jamison's Survivor nonsense), is a testament FS's fighting spirit.

I may not be FS friend in any shape or form but Ive got to respect his love for the Music. In the end, Music is the driving force. The politicking is a waste of time.

If I was FS though, I would admit making mistakes, that would serve him well.

Thanks for asking.

Caught in the Game-One of the most underappreciated AOR albums of all-time
Vital Signs-Solid from start to finish
Eye of The Tiger-Some Great songs and some filler
Premonition-The band matures
Too Hot To Sleep-A rockin' album but spotty
Reach-Not bad after 18 years
Survivor-Solid Debut
When Seconds Count-Big Disappointment

maybe I'm underrating CITG. Too many people I see here love it....I'm gonna rip it off the shelf again today, I know your namesake is a great song, as is Jackie, Don't Go...

WSC is a bit of a disappointment. Then Oceans comes on and almost single-handedly rescues the album for me. Can't Let You Go is devastatingly cool, too. Monster Frankie bg vocal.

I like citg because I really think they experimented. The album has a darker feel to it. I understand why it was a commercial flop. There isn't a whole lot for radio play other than the title track. The album is an acquired taste. When Seconds Count is just too soft for me. I never considered Survivor to be a group like Glass Tiger. It's funny you mention Can't let you go and Oceans. Both are on my IPOD. I guess we don't disagree on everything.

2 best songs on the album (an in the entire Srvr cannon as I know it) and totally different than anything else on the record.

I mean Oceans is like, top 3 at least for me.

I agree. I have seen them three times and they have yet to play it. Big mistake. I have seen Can't Let You Go live. It's terrific. Would love to see the solo to that instead of I see you in everyone.

My Top Ten Songs

1. Eye of Tiger
2. Caught in the Game
3. Fire Makes Steel
4. I Can't Hold Back
5. Ever Since The World Began
6. Half-Life
7. Nothing Can Shake Me
8. Oceans
9. Jessica
10.Too Hot to Sleep
