Old Debate...

Not to drudge up and old debate, but I've been flamed on here before for implying that Bickler's vocals were more rock, while JJ was in more a pop vein....

I thought it interesting when I read this in JP's interview....

"Dave Bickler, he was very street, very rock 'n roll, very raw. When I wrote for Jimi Jamison it was very pop."

It sure did. I respect Andrew and his work. I also want him to know how much I appreciate him providing us the opporunity to share our thoughts. I love open forum discussion. I love the give and take of ideas. Why things do things get personal? I have no idea. I have no agenda. I just love the band and have been following them since Premonition. I have made no bones about the fact that I miss OLD SURVIVOR. I prefer the soaring guitars, tougher lyrics, and that slight hint of keyboard the JP provided. I miss the rock band that captured my imagination. I miss that rock band with attitude. To anyone I have offended with my comments, I am sorry. My only issue with the board is that I feel that Frankie has taken many hits and no one has come to his defense. I just could not tolerate it anymore. Frankie is a major part of the success and for whatever reason many do not want to give him credit. I feel like I have been attacked for just bringing the subject up. I am not related to Frankie. I really have no dog in the fight.

Slander, we both let it get out of hand. This will be the third time I will extend the olive branch - let's agree to disagree, show more respect for each other's opinions, and continue to enjoy this great music, regardless of the status of the band.

Thanks for the kind words and thanks also for showing each other a little more respect.

As for my view - Jimmy is right - there is a rock edge and pop edge to Dave and Jimi, but BOTH were great singers and part of the classic Survivor sound. Both are great melodic rock singers, one a little smoother and one a little rougher round the edges.

Jimi's voice reminds me of a rock opera. Something almost theatrical or Broadway. Clear and pure. Dave's voice sounds strained and rocker. I don't dislike Dave's voice at all... I just find it's got a very unique sound that I wouldn't describe as clear nor pure.

I would agree with the Dave = rock and Jimi = pop analogy. I love how Jimi enunciates... a song like "First Night" comes to mind where he crisply pronounces the "T" on the end of the word "night" (in the line "the night we met") Reminds me a bit of Meat Loaf or Freddie Mercury.

I agree with Andrew... the Dave and Jimi sounds are BOTH distinctly "Survivor" and I wouldn't have it any other way.
