Survivor - East Providence Show Review

Postby FalconONE » Tue Jul 24, 2007 6:32 am

Hi!

I went to East Providence, MA Survivor Concert.
I drove about 6hours from Montreal, QC

The Performance was VERY Good..

But the crow... what a fuckin' crowd...

After the second song, Robin told everyone in the field and on the seats to get up.. beacause he said.. "tht's a rock show.. I want everyone standing!" somewthing like that he said.

I was in the front row.

After the next song.. a security guard talked to us in the front row.. to "sit down beacause the people behind can't see the show.. they are sitting"

I said at myselft.. what&??? it's a rock show.. c'mon..

When Robin saw us sitting after the security guard told us to sit... you can imagine the face of Robin and Frankie.. everyone one sitting.. not a fuckin' good crowd.. It's a festival.. so there's a LOT of People comin' in to see the performers. but don't know them. They are there just "for fun".. There's was mor people from 70-80 than 20-40 there...

The performance was very very good.. but I have never see a fuckin' crowd like this in my life.. Frankie and Robin were not proud of this crowd.

I was at the last jimi jamison show last year in Rutland, VT... I was in a theater.. I imagined in my head, in my car goin'g there, that I will be standing, enjoing the shows with he fans.. but no.. Everybody were sitting for the entire concert.. just a the "eye of the tiger" song everybody were standing.. East Providence concert was my second show of Survivor.. I was very happy for the perfoamce of the guy.. but what a STUPID crowd...

Goin' to East Providence I said to myself.. "no it will not be the same than in a theater.. everybody will be standing .. it's a festival.. a show outside.. with beer, hot dogs.... but no.. the crowd were so stupid.".

VERY Suprise of the crowd...

Guys, Is it the same a all concerts of Survivor?

by the way.. here the setlist.

Burning Heart
Take You On A Saturday
Poor Man's Son
High On You
Summer Nights
Search Is Over
Fire Makes Steel
Burning Bridges
I Can't Hold Back
Eye Of The Tiger

I hope someone caught in on camera or on audio... the performance was really good.

I must admit i'm not a fan of Mcauley.. I'm a a Survivor fan of their "street sound".. (with Bickler) but I must admit.. he did a good job, great voice that night.

Sorry to hear about the crowd. But its great to know Robin was great and like you Im the Bickler street sound lover myself. Thanks for the setlist!

If Robin keeps this up, surely a dvd would be beckoning, or worth it. But certainly NOT with this kind of crowd.

The Performance of Burning Heart was soo night.. great solo by Sullivan.

Would be cool to hear songs not performed 'til a long time ago.. like Children Of The Night, Ready For The Real Thing, Slander, Jackie Don't Go,...

Little Fact:
Did you know that Survivor played only two times with Jamison the song: Light Of A Thousand Smiles on their Rama Casino, Ontario shows in 2002 ? :)

Yes Yes Yes.

But instead it's Poor Man's Son, Summer Nights/Summer Nights, Poor Man's Son.....

I Think it'S time to remove High On You, I Can't Hold Back and Search Is OVer..

At EACH show they performed them from 1984.. I have never head a show from 1984 that they not play High On You.

These a GREAT songs.. but it's time to replace them by :

Search Is Over --- Ever Since The World Began
High On You --- Jackie Don't Go
I Can't Hold Back --- a song from their Self Titled or When Seconds Count album...why not Man Agaisnt The World or As Soon As Love FInds Me.

Remove these songs..not forever of their set list but a least for a year..
and brign them back a year or two latter...

sometimes it's great to play something else..

I remember a show they play in 1996.. one of the last show with Jim Peterik.. it was a WEIRD SHOW.. but a fantastic one!!

They Opened with EYe Of The Tiger.... and the rest of the shwos they played demos, jams...

That was cool!!

No.

Can't remove ANY of the big hits. They're not playing long enough shows to make it "Frankie's favorite guitar licks and some obscure MSG tunes" setlist.

with 10-12 songs on offer there is no choice but to have HIY, Eye, The Search, ICHB.

Look, They removed from 1978 to 2006 the SECOND most popular Survivor song in history with Burning Heart. So any songs can be removed .. the same for Eye Of The Tiger.

I like those vital signs songs for sure.. but Burning Heart must pass before High On You, Search, I can't hold Back.

.. sorry from 1987 t o2006 they removed Burning Heart,,, it isn't a BIG HIT for you?

For me yes, for all not so-hardcore survivor fan yes

Survivor are seen and love by 3 type of fans.

The "street sound" of Survivor (Bickler Eras..)
the "pop/rock" sound of Survivor (Jamison/McAuley era)

I'm form the the first one.. and the fans of the street sound.. love really the vital signs era.. but these songs from the vital signs can take a LITTLE break on their setlist for a year at least...

I always wondered that they removed Burning Heart but to remove HOY, TSIO and ICHB? Sorry, I don´t think that will work. But I do agree to include some of the songs you´ve mentioned would be very cool.

Yea, HUGE hit. I'd rate it as their second or third biggest. But like you or someone said it WAS absent from the setlist forever, whereas the other songs I brought up have been complete staples (not that I like that, I don't wanna hear the search, HIY or ITL) but Burning Heart's not as cemented in as those others so they probly feel like it's dropable (though I'd MUCH prefer that stay in over HIY or some shit).

They're creatures of habit.

Here are where some of Survivor's hit songs ranked on the Billboard charts at the time.

Eye Of The Tiger #1
Burning Heart #2
The Search Is Over #4
High On You # 8
Is This Love #9
I Can't Hold Back #13
American Heartbeat #17
Poor Man's Son # 33

Some of the other songs that charted in the top 100 are.

Somewhere In America
Summer Nights
The One That Really Matters
Caught In The Game
The Moment Of Truth
First Night
How Much Love
Man Against The World
Didn't Know It Was Love
Across The Miles

Some that might have made the top 100, but I can't remember for sure are.

Rebel Girl
Ready For The Real Thing
Desperate Dreams

There was a Cleveland station that was giving Desperate Dreams a lot of air play back in about 1989 and 1990, and I once heard Broken Promises on a station in Dayton Ohio. I know that when Survivor released the second greatest hit's album in 1993 that the band would go on radio stations and play You Know Who You Are live in the studio of the stations.

Here's a mini (and I mean MINI) review of the show from the following website:

I took an excerpt:

Sun, 80s music mark East Providence festival
By:FRANK BELSKY, Special to The Times
07/23/2007

EAST PROVIDENCE - Comfortable, dry sunny weather and the best of '80s rock n' roll spiked the turnout at the East Providence Heritage Festival this weekend at Pierce Field. Conversely, a horde of Rhode Islanders who headed for the beach Friday, Saturday and Sunday diminished the expected record breaking crowd of 30,000 to an average one of 20,000, said Diane Sullivan of the East Providence Parks and Recreation Department.
But, as any E.P. "Townie" will tell you, this is one of the warmest and friendly gatherings of its kind.
"Peaceful?" repeated Police Sergeant Paul Saisselin?" There was nothing close to trouble last night, he said on Saturday.
Later on, five to six thousand who came from as far away as Pennsylvania and Montreal, according to Joe Crook, E.P. Parks and Recreation Director, caught the mood. Survivor recaptured the magic that catapulted them to the top of the early '80s chart with their first hit single, Summertimes. Shortly thereafter, the group's new record broke lots of old records when Sylvester Stalone asked Survivor to write the theme of his upcoming new movie, Rocky.
"It's amazing how 15 to 20 minutes can bring you back 20 years," commented Ryan Tellier.
"They're still great, added Katie Hallaran of Rumford and they still wear, "big hair," she added.
