Also, I have Summer Nights as the main ringtone on my phone, if someone calls that I haven't designated a ringtone for,it rings Summer Nights.
As for the commercial....yes it would be difficult, at best, to actually measure it's impact. The Weird Al comment was an illustration since I couldn't come up with anything better.
Also, yes it does say something about the staying power of the song that a 90's/2000 hip company would want to use it in any way.
It still would be nice to get the view point of Frankie on whether it was a good thing or not since, I'm sure as one of the principle writers of the song, he had the main veto power within the band.
I just think that if given a choice between a commercial like that or "Dancing" ,then I think "Dancing" would be a better choice. If they were given the choice at the same time.
I will ask Frankie...and I'll post the answer here....
How about the Starbucks commercial if Dave and JP were still in...would that change anybodies mind on the issue???
To be totally honest with you Joe.....my gut feeling tells me that A) If they were still in the band,it wouldn't have been done B) The reason is the band would've still been more high profile than it currently is. Again my feelings only....my feelings are that when Jim and Dave left/fired or whatever, it was due to a multitude of reasons....personal and professional. Had the band still been in the position they were in the mid-80's and a viable band, moving product and playing shows at a more traditional pace, I think it would've been much harder to walk away from it,both personally and professionally. But because the band was no longer riding that way of success,it was maybe easier to walk away, call it a day, and move on to other projects.
We all know Dave moved on to singing jingles and even tho it might upset the purist.....I think he is exactly where he should be.....please remember the reason he left the band in the first place.....it had nothing to do with personalities or anything other than health.....Dave's singing style was/is very hard on his throat and that's why he left after "Caught". I remember reading about it and the fact that Frankie or Jim or both made mention that Dave couldn't sing more than 3 or 4 shows on consecutive nights without damaging his voice. He would literally have to shut it down for awhile. Thus why he left....imagine if he hadn't had to leave? No Jimi,no debate over who's better....than what would some of you do?
Jim left for whatever reasons and is happy with what he is now doing. Remember he led the "Ides" to a #1 hit long before Survivor was even on his mind.
Still would be interesting to see what would've happened with concerns to the commercial and the future of the band in general. Who knows maybe they would've continued to make records and tour, maybe they would've all called it a day. Guess we'll never know.
