Peterik -- Van Zant

Postby montyollie » Mon Mar 19, 2007 10:24 am

I was spending some time at Jim Peterik's website today... he's someone I don't focus much on as he's not in Jimi's band and he's not in Survivor anymore, so I'd forgotten that he's still pretty active. I'm an oldskool Survivor fan and a Jimi-head. What can I say.

Anyhow, one of the clips on his site was the story behind how he wrote the song "Alive" for the Van Zant brothers. It was a really cool story and I downloaded the song to see if I'd like it.

HOLY CRAP. I love it. That is the signature sound I've grown to love. I know Frankie and Jim wrote a lot of the Survivor hits together. And I know Peterik wrote that Songwriting for Dummies book (my roommate seredipitiously owns it!).

I guess I didn't really realize how talented he is.

My other hands down favourite songwriter is Jim Steinman (yeah, of the Meat Loaf/Bonnie Tyler/Air Supply/Celine Dion fame). If the song sounds like it should be sung in an arena with thousands of fans holding up lighters, chances are Steinman wrote it. HA!

I'm shocked at how similar Peterik and Steinman are in their epic anthems. :)

Resurrecting this one because I forgot to post this a few months back...

I made this slideshow of my past two trips volunteering in New Orleans and set it to the song "Alive" by Van Zant. I'm going back in a couple of weeks too. That place really draws me.

Enjoy!

Jim Peterik is a songwriting machine. My favorite songwriter ever.

Did you know that when Jimi was in Cobra he and Mandy Meyer (Cobra's guitarist) wrote a song called "I'm A Fighter" that Van Zant recorded?

I'M A FIGHTER IS A KILLER TRACK. I played the s*** out of it during my days in radio in the late 80's. It is also a staple on my i-pod. If you love Peterik you should check out SUNSTORM with JLT and Kelly Keagy's new one! Terrific stuff guys. Peterik writes killer tracks with nice hooks.
