New Survivor Band Note

Postby Slander » Mon Oct 27, 2008 1:19 am

This is good news. Not only did the band keep up their busy schedule over the past year it appears they are working on new music. Here is the latest band note:

It's been a long while and hope I've not lost the job of band reporter.  I'm sorry and also have had lots going on in my life so the time literally flew by me without notice.  I've moved for one thing and we all know what that can be like!  It's been a couple of months and yet I find I have days where it seems like I haven't put a dent in unpacking and organizing.  The deliveries were to the point where I had them stopped for a few days to get a bit of peace of mind and down time.  You did not tell me this was the job it turned out to be!

We've had a great year!  You guys made it the best Survivor Summer to date.  All the warm welcomes and applauses to let us know you are all glad to have us back in the house for a night were and always will be amazing to this performer.  It is the very reason I do what I do and carry onward with my hopes and dreams in my heart.  In many cases I have it made as I do actually get to lay many of the hopes and dreams I hold in my heart out there each performance.  It may be the best part of doing what it is I do for a living and having one of the best jobs on earth!

The guys in the band are all well and doing the same, many of them busy with living their daily lives and getting it on.  They have all done such a great and consistent job that I am proud to play with each and every one of them.  They are good men filled with good will and they think about you guys all of the time.  Our appreciation for our fans is second to none.  It contains no ulterior motives or agendas other than to play the best set we can play for you guys when you come out to see the band perform.  Nothing more and nothing less.

So many cool things went on this past summer for us.  We played for a couple of special events but the big one was for The Tampa Ray's Rally in Tampa a couple of weeks ago.  Now they are in The World Series.  I told the GM I wanted seats in the dugout so we shall see if I get them.  Perhaps you will tune in one evening to see Robin singing The National Anthem.  What a version that will be!  We also played at NASA or the 50th Anniversary of The Space Program.

Things begin to wind down this time of year but we are making every attempt to get out there and stay on the stages.  Sitting home does not suit us well and in particular I seem to really suck at it.  Its one of the main reasons I kept plowing onward way back in 90's as I always had the need to get out there in the great wide open.  Once I get up on that stage it is so hard to get off!  And though I have my moments during other times of the day they do not occur on the stage.

I've got a new concept and a couple of tunes for a new project.  Robin and I have one from a hotel room session and he has been sending along lyrics as always.  Its always a great time to have Droubay laying down his grooves and coming up with licks for them.  So many of the old Survivor Tunes began that way.  For this moment, the one I can tell you about most is "Hesitation Dance."  Without him playing that groove in the background at rehearsal I would have never began playing those guitar riffs!

And then we have the short-fingered licks of my own that go onward to spawn a few tunes of their own.  I have been playing more than ever and those licks still come out of me so it kicked me in the ass to get a move on with another project.  The other guys are all up for it and we have no particular reason to rush so this will be a different process and especially with the contributions of Robin.  Don't forget, he and I have already worked together on one of his projects and the creativity flew.  This shall be no different.

We send you all good health and the very best of everything...

Be back soon...

-- Frankie Sullivan

It's great to hear that they are working on new material! But I'm disappointed to read the part about the "we have no particular reason to rush" line. I do of course understand that you don't want to rush to the point that your putting out an inferior product. But we don't want it to take 16 more years either.

I hope that the new songs kind of have a "Hesitation Dance" vibe to them. IMO their direction on a new album, especially with Robin on vocals, should be along the lines of songs like "Hesitation Dance" "Children Of the Night" "Caught In The Game" "She's A star" "Take You On A Saturday" "Rhythm Of The City" and "Slander."

They need to make up for the overly light "Reach" album. And Robin's voice is more suited to hard Rockers.

Well said, I'm all for your suggestions. Man, Hesitation Dance has got all the hooks that I coud ever dream of! That indeed would be a real welcome vibe after ALL these years.

:D

When FS said that it was Marc's contribution that helped him come up with the licks, is when I said to my self "I knew it!". Marc has not been given the credit (in composition) in any record sleeve that I remember. Marc is really something else. Modest to the T as always. I've said it once, said it 20 times atleast, Marc would have made a whole world of difference to THTS. Sorry Mickey.

I listened to THTS last week, which was about the billionth time overall. Anyway, when I was listening to it I was once again thinking about how much I missed Marc and Stephan playing on it. Mickey and Bill did a great job on it. But at the same time it's still missing some of that classic Survivor feel to it because of the absence of Marc and Stephan. And just a couple of hours ago I was listening to Premonition, and again, I was thinking that if only Marc and Stephan were on the THTS album how much better it would have been. And that's saying a lot seeing as THTS is my favorite Survivor album. CITG is a close second on my list.

What Marc and Stephan played on Premonition was perfect for the Survivor sound. Their such underrated players. Listen to Marc's drumming on "Love Is On My Side." :D

I also intended to mention that not only is a harder Rocking style best suited to Robin's vocals, but it's also playing to Frankie and Marc's strengths if they play those "Hesitation Dance" "Children Of The Night" and "Take You On A Saturday" type Rockers. Before Reach ever came out I had really been hoping that Frankie and Marc would really Rock out on the album. I'd love to get that out of the next album, it was kind of missing on Reach.

I think we're both on the same page mostly. With respect to Reach, since Jamo did not originally do COTN, HD and TYOAS, there was no way Reach would sound like those songs. Just my humble opinion.

Oh, and have a look at my comments on the TSIO/WYLAW comparison. 8)

come on now Red...You stop that!

Master Slander (who is NEVER wrong) said it himself...Not only did the band keep up their massively busy schedule (as you said, Frankie and Survivor will play three dates a year whether they have to or not)...and they are working on new material...coming to a store near you in say 2089...

The best unintentional comedy was when Frankie Fillibuster said they were in no rush (  ) for this "new project" which btw, wasn't alluded to as "Survivor."

He was talking about the members of Rush, saying they were not going to be on the cd, like he thought :D
