REO, LOVERBOY, SKID ROW, QUIET RIOT, even JOURNEY, all bands in a similar boat as Survivor yet all of their latest albums were available at US retail outlets.

I think many of you hardcore Survivor fans overestimate the impact Survivor had. Even in their heyday Survivor never headlined an Arena show. All of those bands above did (except maybe Skidrow).

Honestly, I've always felt that most people UNDERESTIMATE the impact that Survivor has had.

Keep in mind that I'm a big fan of Loverboy. But I've never considered Loverboy to be an bigger than Survivor.
People tend to forget how many big hits Survivor have had over the years.

Eye Of The Tiger #1
Burning Heart #2
The Search Is Over #4
High On you #8
Is This Love #9
I Can't Hold Back #13
American Heartbeat #17
Poor Man's Son #33

Not even Journey ever had a song as HUGE as Eye Of The Tiger. And if it weren't for the unfortunate timing of having to go against that huge hit song for charity "That's What Friends Are For" with all of those famous singers, then Burning Heart would have been the #1 hit for a few weeks.

If Survivor had had a record company that would have promoted the band worth a damn, they would have been as huge as Journey.

Great points!

The closest Journey got for a single was having Open Arms at no. 2 for 7 weeks (that too incidentally used in a Soundtrack).

I think I remember Search actually reaching no. 2 at some point (but official weekly Billboard records shows as 4) no thanks to Prince's Rasberry Beret (which also failed to make it to no. 1).

I'd like to add that Survivor didn't have a innovative manager like Journey did.

You hit it on the head! Terrible marketing and promotion.

Well excuse the hell out of me for getting 'off topic'...

My God, there were a total of three post in this entire board in December and someone wants to worry about staying on topic...give me a break and perhaps get over youself. It was a good review. I laugh, i cried, i felt warm inside. Bla, bla

however, had they never had that record company they would have never had the rocky opportunity and hence no EOTT and BH. Therefore they would've been done after the EOTT album most likely.

Tito, Survivor had been a good band, that's how Stallone chose them. I think most bands need a little push no matter who great they seem to be. Even Steve Perry was basically an unknown before Journey, lucky HH happened to notice him. The rest is History.

I totally agree. Their first album is one of my favorites if not top favorite album of theirs. Premonition was very good as well. My point was, (I've heard two different stories about this) had Stallone not contacted Scotti Brothers, who suggested Survivor, Survivor may never had the EOTT opportunity. Had they not had that and the third album (EOTT) not done well, they may have been searching for a new record company. Had they survived (no pun intended) that, I doubt they would have survived after CITG flopped. Translation, although Scotti Brothers could've marketed them better overall, had it not been for Scotti Brothers, Survivor would have never been what they became.

Agreed, which is STILL the only way to get f-ing Reach legally.

try nehrecords.com. They are out of colorado. It's where I buy my stuff. Great prices too! Nice people.

Thanks for the tip. I ordered mine through nehrecords and paid 15 dollars less than another site....that in itself is unbelievable.

Thanks again!
When in doubt, DUCK!

I am going to wait until this weekend's World Stage show and get a copy. I'm sure they'll have some there...and I'm sure they will be overpriced ($20). :D

At least I should be able to get it autographed though.

I would say definately Skid Row grew bigger than Survivor...maybe not a true headliner, but opening for Bon Jovi and in stadiums for Guns N' Roses...

Reo Speedwagon - I would say yes as well. They stayed around a while, but were pretty much a true ballad band as far as the hits.

Loverboy - I never got it at all, but I suppose they were for a while.

Quite Riot - Indeed...they became a joke later, but people loved them early on.

What about Night Ranger?

Night Ranger??? I saw Survivor open for Night Ranger twice. That answer your question?

Honestly I never saw Survivor as a headliner. Can not remember everyone they opened for. I think they may of opened for both Journey and REO. I know I saw them once open for Starship.

I like Loverboy I think they are great. I remember seeing them on the Lovin Every Minute Tour.....they were huge at that time.

The topic has been debated before, but honestly other than the song Eye of the Tiger.....the album had no other recognizable hits. Caught in the Game did not do well. Vital Signs was a big hit. When Seconds Count had two hits. And Too Hot To Sleep didn't do very well.

Survivor opened for Triumph in 1981. I believe they opened for Reo Speedwagon that same year or '80.

Since the ship of on topic has long since sailed.

I saw Survivor as a headliner back in 86 for the When Seconds Count tour. It was at a tent venue, so I don't know if you all count that as a true headline gig.

Okay I saw Survivor when they headlined and they didn't play in a tent! Jason and the Scorchers were the opening act.

When I saw them play, they had a Chicago area keyboardist named Steve Mullen opening for them.

So I take that it was a local gig they were playing?

Perry

Postby Cheryl » Fri Jan 23, 2009 4:16 am

<<Even Steve Perry was basically an unknown before Journey, lucky HH happened to notice him. The rest is History.>>

I beg to differ, Perry already had a deal with CBS/Columbia, my memory is shot, and was already 'discovered' however, on a July 4th holiday one of the band members' was killed in an accident and Perry withdrew, went back home....

Herbie had heard Perry's voice over many times before and yes, he helped and knew what he was doing, a good manager can make or break a band.

I saw Survivor go through several while working for Jimi...also several tour managers.

Sometimes change is a good thing, but sometimes having the same people around you like Journey did, make the tour much easier. I can remember watching the Frontiers and Beyond video and the thought of them taking so long, days to set up the stage, then they get it down to hours, just amazed me.

But you gotta have a 'team' behind you, sound, tour mgr, mgr, you can't change those like underwear and expect things to flow smoothly, coz they don't...just my humble opinion.

I bow down to your knowledge Cheryl! Just a question. I think JJ and SP seem to have a very similar history. Being in band in the 60's, having a contract with a record company.... Then they are "discovered". But in reality they have actually done pretty well for themselves. What to you think?

(laughing at the bowing to my knowiledge
...son, I know wayyyy too much about Perry)

lol...more than I need to but I was a huge Journey fan...still am but it'll never be the same.

I think Perry financially probably has done VERY well as he has songwriting credits=royalty checks....but I also think he has a love/hate thing with singing, he's a perfectionist and in my humble opinion....I think he quit his 94 tour due to the fact that the band was not Journey...it didn't have the magic and he missed that, was I surprised when they got back together, not really but that's another longgggggggggggg story....but was surprised when he was let go or given the 'choice'. Would he ever go back, never say never....but I don't think so.

Jimi has done well for himself as well but I think this last cd is a small example of his talent, he just needs people behind him to help him....

I see Jimi on tv, always have. If you've ever talked to him,he's very witty and can also cut you down to size in a ny second if need be...but I always think of him when I see like Meatloaf doing that between a rock and hard place, or the reality shows...he wouldn't do a reality show I doubt....

but he still has the talent, looks and charm to be on tv in any capacity....

I also think the next few cds will be written and sung as well as Crossroads Moment. It's a great cd and Jimi's voice sounds better than ever.
love everyone, everyday, every minute...
