Kevin Chalfant and Survivor

Postby Eyeof » Wed Jun 17, 2009 11:18 pm

JP has said before he was his choice to replace Dave in '84...

How do you guys think Chalfant would have went over in Survivor? Then or even now?

I've finally got both Strom CD's, so I've been listening and thinking about it and I think he would have/would be great.

What effect would he have had on Vital Signs?

Just a topic for discussion....as I've ran it through my head a great deal...

I'm not sure why he never ended up in Journey...

On that note, how do you think Bickler would have sounded in Journey in '86?

Or JJ in Journey for that matter or Perry in Survivor?

IMO Chalfont could've pulled off either Journey OR Survivor. Very Bickler/Perryesque.

Chalfont was IN Journey in the early-mid '90s pre Trial By Fire, promting Perry's sudden "urge to be in Journey again" and that was that. Lineup was Schon/Valory/Smith/Cain/Rolie/Chalfont.

It's Chalfant....not Chalfont!! hahahhaha...

Had the pleasure of working with Kev in World Stage for a few years....and got to do Survivor material with him....he still has 95% of his range and 100% of his vocal tone left...he would have been a great fit as a singer, but personality wise in the mix with the band who knows...in the end it comes to that unfortunately....

He absolutely smoked Somewhere in America....and I Can't Hold Back was a fave of mine cuz I got to do the Mickey Thomas parts singing along with Kev....

It's funny, because I'm pretty into this Chickenfoot cd right now, but I read where the initial idea was going to be Sammy, MA, Neil Schon and Deen Castronovo, but Hagar went back to VH in '04 and then Journey reformed...

That would have been a cool lineup as well, but I'm really digging Satch's play....

On that note...JV...since you are a song writer, what is your take on the Joe Satriani vs. Coldplay deal....

There is no denying that Satch's tune from '04 sounds more than a little like Cold Play's song...

Anyone not familiair with it, look it up on itunes...it's pretty crazy...

JS's song is "If I cCould Fly" while Coldplay's song in question in "Viva La Vida"....

Yep is was gonna be Planet Us, which was aborted by the VH reuinion, it then rose from the ashes w/ Schon, Deen and JSS and became Soul SirkUs and that band actually resurrected and recorded a shelved Planet Us song, Peeping Through A Hole and changed it to Peephole. Damn good rocker, too.

VERY VERY Similar.......BUT....what is actually new these days....it is really hard to actually have something that has not been written before...sure you can create new melody/music combonations...but NOTHING is completely new anymore....

I write things that are based on my youth/life/emotions....all are tied into two of my closest friends....Luke and Frankie.....Toto and Survivor....I am glad I have those two talking.....and when i write it sounds like those two bands because that is where my heart lies, with that kind of music and expression....

I hope that makes sense........

Joe, interesting all. However, isn't Mr. Mister also one of your inspirations?

Inspirations....yes....but, everything that goes on with my life finds its way into material....I have been with the same girl for 6 years now and try not to sensationalize her or my songs by peppering them with relationship material....it takes the privacy out of the relationship....but alot finds its way in regardless....

Songwriting is different for everybody....for me it is an outlet to release things I would otherwise never talk about.....lyrics and melodies for me are my strong point (so I have been told) and I really take pains to make sure nothing is jive, contrite or sophmoric....and a complete story is told...I love other writers who do the same....

Favorite Lyricists:

Peter Gabriel
Richard Page
JP and FS (Too Hot To Sleep Album)
Steve Lukather (Rediculously underrated in this capacity)
Bernie Taupin
Martin Page (If you don't know who he is shame on yourself!!!)

Often wondered about Kevin in Survivor. After hearing World Stage a few years back, Kevin would have been a very good match. But Fankie, I don't know...Him and Kevin seem like they would be on two different trains. Frankie being on the slow train.

You know what I just remembered, I saw Martin Page in concert around '93 or '94 (during my college years) I want to say. It was a "radio sponsored" show headlined by Firehouse (acoustic set), Martin Page played a few songs (this was when his song hit, "Stone and Light(?)", two freaky chicks who had one hit back in the day, and someone else. It was held at the county fairgrounds out in Iowa.

Chalfant belongs in Journey, a top tier band and definetly moreso than arnel puckadena......I would fight for that statement.

I would fight for that also, but I would not take anything from PA. I am a big Kevin fan and think he does belong in Journey, thought so when Augeri got the reins. But I loved the Augeri years, and hope I can say so about the PA years. Will admit they are off to a good start.
