Sounds great .. This is the best I have heard Frankie play . Seems he changed some of his sound .

I think Frankie is a studio wizard for production and sound. I never really thought his live playing was as good because of all the over-dubs and background sounds he creates in the studio.

The pre Jamison era songs suites this group of guys best in my opinion .

They should do as Eddie Money just rock it up and play a ton of music instead of 8-10 songs .

He always plays ALOT of parts that TOGETHER sound great....that is his thing....ALOT of guys do it...no magic, but with one guy live NO WAY they can match that sound....

Sorry joe.............always been a huge believer in "If you can't play it live, don't put it on the album." When people go to a show they don't want to hear some half-baked version of a song, they want to hear the version that's on the record. That goes for ALL players, not just survivor. Too many people press play now days.
While I understand the desire to make an album sound sonically perfect by the use of multi-layers etc......it's WAY too easy these days with the use of Pro-Tools and the like. Makes you wonder if the person or persons can even play? How many times have we heard of people using studio magic, trickery or whatever to substitute for their lack of ability? Jamie Foxx anyone....even admitted it also.

I could not agree more!!!

BUT.....

Then I could NEVER do Mecca live...I would need 5 keyboard players for the layers I have created on Mecca II....

And I would be hard pressed to tell you who would be left playing out there if EVERY note needed to be reproduced live.....JV

Not my stuff.....especially now that I am on the keys along with others....I am building this around sonics, and melody...not playability live....I have had alot of fun working on this album and it has lent itself to really opening up my creativity....opened my eyes to alot of other things too....

Listening to the "Burning Heart" clip, I hear 3 things...

1. The guitars are WAY too freaking loud, and they distract me.

2. Sullivan seems to be playing the rythym guitars more in a "lead" style instead of falling back into the background of the song during the vocals. It's almost like he's playing lead throughout the entire song... again... distracting!

3. This band needs some SERIOUS help in the backing vocal dept!  Those backing vocals sounded like ASS!!!
The artist formerly known as Jim. :-)

Good point.
Like I think live, he plays way too much on stuff like The Search which had minimal guitars.
But since they have no rythm guitarist on stage I'll allow a partial pass for the indulging.

Agreed, why wouldn't you take advantages of the sonic tools multi-track recording gives you? I don't understand that logic, axe. It's one thing if you punch in a solo you could never play note for note or can't sing a single backing vocal you put on record live, but just because you track a few guitar parts and you only have one guitarist doesn't mean you can't do some multi-tracking on the guitars... gives you that big album sound.

I think bands sound better with a rhythm guitar...I'd argue that Van Halen neve sounded as good live than early on when Eddie's ego would allow Sammy to play guitar...

Also, Corabi playing guitar added a great deal to Motley Crue's album...

Hey Red, maybe Corabi could be the next lead singer of Survivor! ;)

Call me crazy...but I think the songs (from beginning to end) on Mecca1 were so good that they could be stripped back a little and still sound great live. Actually, I think the songs would sound better live if they were bit more raw.

The first CD was, and I am sure the second CD will be, a sonic masterpiece. I would definitely go see Mecca live or buy a live DVD. Any possibility of doing one...perhaps a 6-7 song MR Fest2 set and including the DVD in a special two disc version of Mecca2. Would Frontiers go for it?
