Jim Peterik Won't Grow Up (Article Chicago Tribune 08.22.10)

"He's a friendly stranger in a black sedan. Won't you hop inside his car?

He's got pictures, he's got candy, he's a lovable man. He'll take you to the nearest star. He's your vehicle, baby. He'll take you anywhere you want to go. He's your vehicle, woman. By now I'm sure you know … who I'm talking about. If you grew up in Chicago, in the late '60s to early '70s, with a radio pressed to your ear, then certainly you know. That's when Jim Peterik and the Ides of March, the pride of Berwyn, roamed the earth. Until they split up in 1973; then most of the band, having socked away some cash, went to college and started families, became upholsterers and property managers.

They were in their 20s.

But a funny thing happened: Jim Peterik didn't grow up. He traded in his black sedan for a Lamborghini. And radio ubiquity? For him, it never dried up, and he never went away, or left Chicago. Indeed, if I had a nickel for every time I heard him recently sing "Vehicle," the Ides' biggest hit, which reached No. 2 on the Billboard Top 40 charts, and was impossible to avoid in the summer of 1970 and now sounds like the marching band anthem it is — if I had a nickel for every time I heard him simply reference those lyrics ("Well, I'm a friendly stranger/In a black sedan/Oh, won't you hop inside my car?") — I would be wealthy. That said, it would take many lifetimes, and as many Top 40 hits as he's written, before my nickel jar was as heavy as his."

Could have been a great article, but the guy clearly doesn't "get" Jim.

Why should he have to grow up?!

It was a nice profile, but writer does seem a bit of a cock - asking him "Why don't you just go away?" is ridiculous.

Matt and Andrew, I didn't sense any of what you two did. I think the "Why don't you just go away?" question was a light-hearted poke and, at the same time, serious question about why the guy still does what he does (obvious to me ... he lives it, loves it and breathes it). And I thought the writer did a good job of conveying that, without coming right out and saying it. I know I was smiling through the whole article and had I sensed this dude was dissing Jim I would have found out where he lived and ripped his head off.

My favorite part  :

Yeah, he said, and he's "gotten out of countless speeding tickets" by mentioning his career too. "I've been pulled over so many times. Usually for going at least 25 miles per hour over. If the cop is semi my age or a little bit younger, I know I got it made. I go, 'You know, I don't expect this to influence you at all, but did you ever see 'Rocky III'? 'Yeah.' 'Well, hey, I'm the guy who wrote "Eye of the Tiger"! I played the guitar too! Dooga-dooga-dooga-dooga-Dant!-Dant!-Dant!-Dant!-Dant!-Dant!-Dant!-Dant!-Dant!-Dant!-duhhhhhh.' 'Really? No kidding?' 'Really!' 'Sing it!' So, now I'm on the side of the highway going, 'Risin' up, back on the street …' My record is clean, yet I've been pulled over something like 20 times.

I don't know - there's ribbing and then there's disparaging dressed up as good natured ribbing. Kinda like a friend who makes one too many wisecracks about you regarding the same subject or something - eventually, there's a bit of malice there. I kinda got that feeling from the writer's tone.

I agree with Ehwmatt....this article did JP no favors as far as editing...if I was somebody who did not know him extremely well I would think of him in a whole different light...not a favorable one by the way the article paints him, I think the guy that wrote it just did not get it....or JP........but hey, any publicity is good publicity right???

I've always wanted JP to sit in on a Journey writing session. I think he, Neal and Jon could come up with some fantastic lyrics and melodies.

That'd be an incredible combination - I think. Unless Jon and JP would clash too much between Cain's penchant for sugary sweetness and JP's penchant for theatrical bombast. I've always wondered if JP writes more songs on guitar or piano... JV... any inside input?

Definately a mix.....but, when he and I would write next to his badass piano in his great room, everything always turned out great....JP is not FS as far as guitar players go...but as a writer, and coming up with riffs...well I will let history take that over.....he has ALOT of BLING on the wall....he is a good rhythm player....
