Survivor: A Master of AOR? You Don't say..Official Debate

Postby survivorfan2005 » Thu Sep 30, 2010 7:14 am

Ok folks, I am here to save the forums from the cricket lurking about..lol Here is a great debate for you all.

WHY DO YOU BELIEVE SURVIVOR IS NOT AS BIG OR BIGGER THAN COMPETETORS IN THE AOR GENRE SUCH AS JOURNEY, REO SPEEDAWGON...ETC

(At least ol' Dave has a solo album coming out.. I have mentioned this lots of times before but I will again.)

It's like this, Survivor was never going to be as big as Journey (for example) NOT because they don't have the talent or the music because THEY DO and even could be bigger than the likes of Journey despite how long they've been around. The MAIN REASONS that Sruvivor is NOT as big as they could be I can say in a few reasons and changing band members is no excuse.

Reasons Survivor has not reached their full potential:
(feel free to add to the list)

1. Publicity (a few local concert reviews, one starbucks
Commercial, DWTS performance is great and all and gives some help but doesn’t cut
it anymore) I mean think of Journey’s publicity in films (not just Stallone movies or karate Kid..lol)

- Merchandising
- Online presence is decent but not acceptable for a legendary band such as this.

2. Management
- Frankie is too arrogant of a manager
- PR is horrible (as we can see) because we don’t even get monthly updates.
And to mention the lack of updates has really shaken and turned away even the most
Loyal fans.
- Frankie’s belief and I quote “ CD’s don’t bring in the money, concerts do) mentality.
…gosh I could go on and on about this reason..

3. Live Shows
- While live shows are fantastic and a lot of folks love them despite a few things there are some things
Than can be changed.
- 10 min Frankie solos (dude we know your better than Jimi Hendrix and Van Halen but seriously)
- Length of shows could be longer. We know yall are old but even the stones play longer..lol
- Set lists could WIDELY be used In variety.. How many would love to hear some classic songs that are
never played live.
- Most fans agree that Robin is excellent as frontman during concerts so no complaints about him but I would like to see some music written for him or more Bickler stuff performed by him. I heard him sing Santa Ana winds and it sent chills up my spine.. OMG

4. Albums
- Seriously, do I need to say the obvious about albums and the faults here?!?! (FACEPALM)
- Updates? See Poor PR
- Too many side projects going on at once.
- Quit giving false information like (“It should be out by the summer of 2010” as FS said over a year ago..
- Releases? Yeah ITunes only isn’t going to cut it (think of all the torrents..etc) and please release the albums in the US as well and not only in Euorpe.. Yeah Reach still isn’t available anywhere in the US that I’m aware of and they wonder why sales are down in the US? Hello, if people knew about the band and heard some of the music and actually could go to the local Wal-Mart then I’m sure you’d get a larger fanbase.
- One Word: Wal-Mart! In regards to above statement.. If you sell it they will buy! Think of the success Journey has had.. God even Justin Beiber beats Survivor in sales (omg, that’s sad).
- Also.. Melodicrock.com… Andrew could get Survivor some excellent PR. (if he uses them correctly…fail law suits)..lol

5. Law Suits
-Seriously, I don’t want to know how much money alone has been put toward law suits..

Anyhow, here is some reasons why I think Survivor hasn’t lived up to its potential and unless something is done they will forever be remembered as “oh those people who sang that eye of the tiger song in rocky”. IT IS A GREAT SONG BUT COME ON THERE ARE WAY BETTER SONGS IN SURVIVORS WAR CHEST..

For instance look at these demos, could they not release some of these on a CD (the ones I don’t have of course) that’d be better than nothing.

check this old survivor song out, it’d be great for a rerecording
Kid Dynamite http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9luYzAG8c8

Anyhow, I like to be the one to stir things up since it is getting really quiet in here so I want everyone’s thoughts on why you believe our beloved band hasn’t reached their full potential and what could have been done differently and I’d like to have some of you music industry veterans like Joe V. Andrew and anyone else to attempt this question and what would you like to see changed assuming that no reunion tour is going to happen or anything like it. (which would be cool) ^_^
. Of course I'm being realistic here. We all know survivor isnt going to get in the top 10 nowadays seeing as most of the majority genres are things like horrible gangsta rap, emo and modern rock (which all sounds the same to me)..etc and it’s not likely that they’ll get a hot new single out there or anything but they could do better In their genre though especially with a great rock voice like Robin at the lead..

simple answer...

poor management and promotion in the 80s when it would have actually mattered. This is the BIG one.

In more recent times....inability to put out any material, little communication with the few fans that actually care, and a very fractured lineup that only resembles the popular band in name only.

It's a recipe for the current situation, with little hope on the horizon.
