Runway Lights

Was listening to Runway Lights this morning... still love that song!

Does anyone know if they ever played it in concert? And is there a recording of it with JJ on vocals? I'm curious to hear how that would sound, particularly since the song sounds a bit like a precursor to "Burning Heart."

I have asked this question over and over and never gotten a response. The only songs I have heard off Premonition are Poor Mans Son, Summer Nights, and Take You on A Saturday. I for one think they should open a show with Light Of A Thousand Smiles! What an open that would be.

Probably done live at some point prior to Dave leaving the band in '83. Might have been done in the early-to-mid 90s with Dave also. Aside from the above mentioned (and I doubt the full version of Summer Nights has been played much--if at all), very little off Premonition has been done with any singer. Be interesting to hear JJ's take on some of these songs, as well as DB's take on some of the JJ material.

I don't know why, but I VERY rarely listen to Hearts A Lonely Hunter. I always stop the album before that song. Same thing with Santa Ana Winds. The only Bickler-era closing track that I make a point of listening to is Silver Girl.
I love all of the JJ-era closing tracks except for "Home," but I hardly even count that one. "See You In Everyone", "Burning Bridges," and "Can't Let You Go," are all among my favorites.

[quote="DavidWT"] Same thing with Santa Ana Winds. /quote]

Wow. Give it a spin again. I happen to think Santa Ana Winds is a classic. We used to crank it up at my frat house. For me, it is Survivor's equivalent of Hotel California. Moody, dark, emotional. I could go on. Give it a listen again. Bickler kicks ass on it.

For what it's worth, I think the Japan running order of Premonition flows MUCH better, putting Heart's a Lonely Hunter in the middle and closing with Love is on My Side.

Japan order....
1. Chevy Nights
2. Summer Nights (Full Version with 2nd verse and extended bridge, not the radio edit that was on the US version)
3. Poor Man's Son
4. Heart's a Lonely Hunter
5. Light of a Thousand Smiles
6. Take You on a Saturday
7. Runway Lights
8. Love is On My Side

Interesting... I never knew that the Japan version had a different order of songs. I also don't know if I ever heard the full version of Summer Nights. I only have the US cassette version of that album.

The differences are the extra verse before the first chorus and the extended bridge. Much better for the song.

JV, when I was a freshman in college I bought Vital Signs right when it came out. It was slow mover on the charts as you may recall. Not getting a ton of radio play initially. My roommate walked in one afternoon while I was playing the cassette and says "When did Journey come out with a new album?"

Thanks for the link! It's really interesting to hear this after listening to the shortened version for so many years and never even realizing that it was shortened. It's a shame they cut it on the US cassette release (and maybe the CD, too? I don't know.)

Postby Journey/Survivor » Sat Feb 25, 2012 1:49 pm

In 1982 I was 10 years old, and that was the year that I first became familiar with Survivor, through Eye Of The Tiger. I loved the song EOTT, it was my favorite song. I tried to hear the song every chance I got for the first couple of years after it came out.

But it wasn't until 1984 with Vital Signs coming out that I started buying all of Survivor's past albums.

The cassette copy of Premonition that I first bought had the edited version of Summer Nights, so the first couple of years that I had Premonition, it was the edited version of Summer Nights that I was hearing.

But by the late 80's I came across a Rock magazine that had the lyrics of Summer Nights inside it. I read the lyrics, and I wondered what was up with a couple of the lines in the lyrics, because they weren't in the version of the song that I was hearing. It wasn't until I got a Japanese copy of Premonition on CD in the early 90's that I got to hear the full-length version of Summer Nights. But since I've been hearing the full-length version of Summer Nights for the last 20 years now, it would seem odd to me to have to go back to the edited version.

For those of you that have the Cobra First Strike album... The version of the song Blood On Your Money that appears on the albums is missing a lyric-line that I've only heard when they've performed the song live. I have also seen that one line printed in the lyric sheet in a magazine. So I guess the magazines are given printouts of the original lyrics, even when an edited version of a song is released?

LOL!

Now that reminds of me something i thought back in 1985.

They were playing Heart's Never on radio. Now I had not heard of Heart before so I was thinking to my self "when did Survivor change their lead singer AGAIN and to female?!" I kid not. A mixture of disappointment excitement confusion and anxiety all rolled into one.

Took me ages to get used to the CD running order too, as for years I only had it on cassette. I forget the precise track list, but it's something like:

Chevy Nights
Summer Nights
Poor Man's Son
Heart's a Lonely Hunter

Take You On a Saturday
Light of a Thousand Smiles
Love Is On My Side
Runway Lights

Definitely ends with Runway Lights.

Dave's performance on Poor Man's Son is stunning. Just listen to him attack those notes!
