New Album: Reach

Postby AOR rules » Fri Sep 09, 2005 9:31 pm

I just wonder what you other forum members think about that there is coming new Survivor album in november. I will definitely buy it as i´m huge Survivor-fan, I´m just a bit worried if the quality will be good enough because Jim Peterik is not in the line-up. Still, there is three old members so I guess it´s pretty certain it won´t be total waste. And quite surprising turn to re-record “Eye of the tiger”. I think the original version is such a perfect one that it should be difficult to find such a new perspective to the song that would entitle re-recording. But I try to listen it without biased attitude when I hear it first time.

I'll be picking it up too, long is it comes out on these shores.

Got my reservations about peterik's absence, too. But with Droubay back in the fold and stalwarts Jamo and Frankie it's still hopeful.

I am a very dedicated Survivor fan (i know jamo personaly) no other band like them. I can't wait untill this new album is released in December. It is confirmed that it will contain all NEW material except for 2 songs which one will probobly be Fire Makes Steel. When I say NEW i mean NEW, no demos, no unreleased versions, brand NEW!! This will be Survivor's first album in years and is expected to go higher than Eye of The Tiger.

While there is no name for this album yet, I did recieve insight on a "working" title called "Back On The Streets". Here is the official statement from Frankie on the album.

"Yes, it is true. We have been recording a CD of ALL NEW MATERIAL and are in the mist of a couple of labels bidding on it. You have never heard these songs. It is and this is a “fresh” new approach for recording that has stomped all over our old and moldy way we’d go about making records. There is the ever ready Marc Droubay leading the Tracking by just kicking major ass and throwing down about as hard as I’ve seen. They say I have worked with the best; well Mr. Droubay is certainly at the top! Jim Jim Jim, what can one say - he plain old sings his Ass Off! And the involvement of my friend and Super Talent Kim Bullard. What can I possibly put into words to really explain his many talents!

Fact is, I cannot. That be said, you should know that Kim is one multi task of talent. The first time I gave Him a hard drive and a “sort of” vibe on what I was looking for what he came back with blew me away. Therefore, I found myself, again, wanting to be surrounded by more folks Like Kim. Jim and I are going to do some writing with Kim and I cannot wait. He is one class act and one hell of a talent.

We spent about 3 months in my new home town recording. I had Tim LeBlanc come in, work with Phil Bonnano on the recording process, and then following by doing the mixing. Tim is in hot demand, Matchbox Twenty to Rob to Macy Grey and everything in between. He is considered the finest young (27) mixer in the business. And allow me to tell you – he is! I enjoy working with him every time I see him and it comes back in our direction ten fold. He is the exact type of person you want to be around. Always up for trying anything, a Master at running “ all” the new high tech recording gadgets and he has one hell of an ear to boot. His mixes are great and thus far, we have seven songs completed. All that is needed from yours truly is to walk in when Tim calls me on the phone to inform me he is ready for me, sit in the middle, listen and make a few suggestions and he prints the final mix.

Tim, like me, also likes to print the digital media to 2” Tape like the old days and we do use it when it sounds better. Of all the new people in my life and truly great friends, Tim LeBlanc is one of the best of them. Just had a Video Chat with him from me (here is Charlotte) to Tim (out there in the Bahamas) working on Shakura. You gotta love technology. I have not had this type of confidence in an engineer/mixer since working with my friend Frank Filipetti.

Release Date>? I don’t know but any date would be fine with me. The days of waiting until a certain time have long ended. The sooner we get the new CD out the better because it is all new tunes that you guys have never heard before and we all want to know what you think. We have 2/3 of the CD Recorded and completed all the way though Mix. When we sign on with a label, in the next few weeks, you’ll be the first to know. You guys deserve at least that much and I also hope to give you a release date then as well.

The guys and I are having the time of our career making this record and all the hard work leads to only good things. The more you put in the more you get out, like anything else that we all do in life. You give it 110% and you get back 110% from all involved. The vibe is relaxed and easy to the point of it never being like this for me and for all involved. Everyone is left to do what they do, how they do it and with no interruptions from others. This is the only way you get the most out of one’s talent. You set them free to simply go for it and they thrive on it because there are no control freaks in the room disturbing the energies of why and what you hire them to do. In this way, you only get their very best and in many ways. It helps them to easily integrate in and contribute to the very best of their abilities.

Personally, I have high hopes you’ll love it and cannot wait to hear and read your feedback. Was it worth the wait? Well, the only ones who will give us that answer are you, the great Survivor Fans who have been asking, wanting, and waiting for new music for years! This a newly charged band with no ties to the past other than the older hit tunes. Why re record demos of tunes from the 90’s when we can simply work the craft and write new ones from 2004 – 2005! And in doing so now, the amount of time, the legal battles and all of it has fallen into place."
here is a link to the brief version http://noted.blogs.com/westcoastmusic/2 ... lliva.html

Also, in other news, Rumor has it that "Fire Makes Steel" will be on the album with Jimi singing. Here is the link to that http://www.frontiers.it/Default.aspx?ta ... bumID=3580 just scroll untill you see it...

That's all for now..What are your opinions?

Well, it looks like Frankie is really excited about the new album so it´s certainly good sign. And it´s great news that it will include new material and not some old demos (Frankie didnt mention Eye of the tiger re-recording, was that also just a rumour?). What puzzles me is that if the record is not ready yet how the hell they are gonna get it released already in november, no way. But it doesnt matter that much as we have already waited so long for new Survivor album that few extra months doesnt hurt. Jim Peterik has already proven his ability to survive without Survivor with his two brilliant Pride of Lions records. Now it´s Frankie & co turn to show if they can survive without Jim.

yeah memphis, that's how I know him. :p

Anyhow, speculations are that "Fire Makes Steel" will be the name of the new album however, I have also heard roumers that the name is said to be "Back On The Streets". I talked to Frankie the other day on Yahoo and he told me for sure the FMS song will be on the cd, but Eye of The Tiger will not be included, it will be included on a Survivor Live CD due out sometime in the spring. I will inform you of further developments....

Me, too. Frankie's been saying this kinda stuff for too long now. But, now more and more information's coming out so I think at least a new record will eventaully really happen.
This live album idea for spring's got me intrigued as well. Abitaman hooked me up with a show from Paduccah, KY in '95 it smoked.

And I have Extended Versions (Live '85.).

It will need to be a double to fit in the guitar solo...

HHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAA!!   Dude, you're SO not kidding. After I saw your report of an epic 20 minutes-per night solo on this year's tour, (front page a while back) I listened back on Paduccah and Ext versions and on Paduccah he goes on CRAZY long, and on Ext Vers he takes huge long solos in at LEAST 2 songs. I don't even like when Eddie VH does this. I think Frankie's a huge VH fan, though, and sees all the people who are Ed heads that go to the VH shows JUST TO HEAR EDDIE's 15-25 minute solo and thinks everybody likes that. Frankie even plays the Hot for Teacher lead as part of his ponderous solo in Paduccah. Also on that show their drummer trots out an agonizingly long solo. After about the 10th minute, the PA announcer comes on and says like, "Mr sos and so, please come to blah ablah blah." The drummer, now long fired in favor of returning Marc Droubay actually has the anger (and balls) to stop his solo, go to a mic and say "Mr interruption, please come to the drum stand." Then goes back and goes on about another 6 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FRANKIE SULLIVAN TALKS SURVIVOR 2005:
Some editited highlights from Survivor guitarist Frankie Sullivan, as posted recently at the band's website: www.survivormusic.com.

SrvrFn05, we have to try to convert NealIsGod to full-blown fandom.

He picked up Gr Hts but wasn't blown away, yet. I'd say move onto "Ultimate" now, dude. Desperate Dreams, Caught In the Game, Didn't Know It Was Love ....

trust me, when this new cd comes out, he and about millions others will be also. I feel that the song "Fire Makes Steel" will be an instant hit.. Of course, that's also what I thought about "Across the Miles". Anyhow, you can listen to 95% of survivor's great songs right on there website at http://www.survivormusi.com/

Let's hope.
Let's hope the empty promises are over. They had some visibility last year with the Starbucks ad and Jamo (sounded GOOD) doing vox on Eye Of The Tiger (lyrics changed mockingly).
That notoriety's fast fading, though.

I'll probably pick the album up out of curiousity, to be a completist. My personal view on Jamison and Sullivan aren't too high, though. Several years back I was in constant contact with FS, until he fire Dave, and didn't have the balls to tell him, Poor Dave found out in the melodicrock.com front page, i dared voiced my opinion about that to FS, and, well that ended that friendship. As for Jamison, well he had the audacity to lie to me about Jim & Frankie not being in Survivor anymore, when he was touring as Survivor some years back, but, that is how I met FS and passed on info that hopefully was useful in stopping the illegal use of the name Survivor. Sadly of course he fired Dave (who is vocally in better shape the JJ), and brought back Jamison, to try to regain the "pretty boy" image of the band. Sadly Survivor, my favorite band, is as relevant as parachute pants are now. As for Fire Makes Steel, it's an awesome album, and Dave sings the tracks with balls, the way Peterik/Sullivan intended, don't know if Jamison can or not, he doesn't have the depth to do it, nor the highs anymore, based on the bootlegs I've been hearing recently.
