Another Frankie Interview

Postby jrnyman28 » Sat Jun 17, 2006 4:12 am

Are you gonna go out and play live with this new album and are you gonna visit Europe ?

Frankie Sullivan: We were scheduled to come over near the end of summer/fall and Im not sure if it will happen. Most of us want it to happen and so badly! We love it over there and have played Germany several times. Touring Europe and The UK would be just amazing... However, it’s not up to me at this point. There are those times when something is out of your hands.

"The Dunaway thing never worked out. There is a thing about getting involved with older musicians that can be dangerous. Some can become very jaded and that takes alot of the fun out of it. When we first got Dunaway involved, we had every intent on making him permanent but as time passed too many of the "been around/jaded player thing began seeping out. It’s a bad thing to happen so you must get it out of the room quickly."

WOW when did this happen ?? Did Barry play in VT ?

And who is this Billy O that is mentioned as their current bass player? I guess he must be someone who played in Survivor back in those past years when they didnt put out any new recording works as Frankie says he is back with the band.

 Weird read. The interviewer got nowhere NEAR the shrift that Andrew got....Found Frankie to be rather snippy in fact with this writer.

Andrew? They replaced the bassist?

I assume he's talking about Billy Ozello (spelling). He was with the band for a while actually after Stephen Ellis left the last time, when Dave was with the band. I'm not sure of the exact time frames.

The thing I will always remember about Dunaway is when I saw Survivor back in Charlotte back in July of last year and Frankie was about 20 min. into this fifth guitar solo, someone in the crowd yelled at Dunaway or gave a look like "what the hell is this guy's problem", talking about Frankie and Dunaway just gave a look like..."he's nuts."

It was funny...

But for anyone that was a regular back on the message boards back in the late 90's, being left in the dark or sudden changes shouldn't come as a shock. Just as Dave...

You know, it's funny someone remembers, and I don't say much, but it makes you kind of have to call BS on a lot of Frankie's jiber..

I mean "Golden Throat", Please....

Those of us on that board, all we heard for three years was how awful a person JJ was, how he stole the name, how Empries was illega, how they always wanted Dave, how they stole the song from the Stallone movie (Ever Since the World Began), I mean this dude practially brainwashed us...

He was in the room all of the time, posted all of the time and it was cool...

Then one day boom....Dave out, JJ back in....and he was gone...anyone that even asked why? They kicked off the board...

Anyway...let it go, let it go...

Dude, I like Nevertheless a lot, too. Didn't think I would based on most saying Talkin Bout Love was better. These Reach sessions seemed to improve it over the FMS demo as well. Kinda Eh on demo for me.

oh yes, I loved Jamie's site...what is she doing now? I've always wondered what ever happened to all of those guys...that board was at one point great....i think you have to pay now and I've heard there is noone on it...are you on it?

and as far as let it go...i have....but...when i read that interview it seems all familiar...heck, he probably has decided to fire the entire band and now he'll just play all the instruments and sing....he does know Tommy Shaw you know...ha....

heck...maybe fs fired everyone else in the bad...

if dunaway is gone, groves is gone, heck...let's get rid of marc and jj as well.....who needs them....

really though, seems something is up....that might explain why andrew said that JJ's interview really wasn't very good....

Back when Jamison had his own band out as Survivor he would tell me on several occassions that he was still getting calls from Sullivan on a regular basis begging him to come back into the band, and that was from 1993-1999.

I didn't know if it was true or not, but once Jimi came back into the real Survivor I assumed that he must have been telling the truth.

I think that Sullivan has it in his mind that the band will do better with Jamison than it will with Bickler? Plus I think that Sullivan wanted to make sure that Jamison would no-longer be touring and recording as Survivor.

You know I've never heard that, but it actually makes a lot of sense...the truth is it probably floored Frankie that JJ was able to get a record deal for Empires and he could not for FMS. Which baffles me as FMS is a better record, imo anyways....

I think that JJ really showed Frankie up in a lot of ways...but it's hard to belive that Frankie and JP could not get a deal....

It's just funny knowing during that time, how much Frankie trashed JJ...

Looking back, he probably wanted to stop him to force the reunion...Dave never had a chance...

EYEOF, I remember you now!! I posted on the old bb too, it was great back then. Course I always hated it when they would yank a thread because of something Frankie didn't like being said. There might have been a occasion when it wasn't appropriate and needed to be taken off. I actually paid my $10 to join the new board and it is DEAD! I guess by making an effort to pay the money, FS will keep out the badgers and it can be monitored easier. I was hoping with the new cd that some of the fans would come back and I'd see my old bb buddies, but it was a ghost town. I went through a major withdraw when Dave left. I did see them with JJ a couple times but it just wasn't the same. I'm not saying Dave is better than JJ, I always hated that argument, but I just prefered Dave and the Dave era of songs. VS is a masterpiece but I like the harder edge they had with Dave in the previous albums. I will have to go back and read the review.

Just read the review, now I don't see where Chris left cause it says he's been in the band 10 years now. I'm glad he's not gone, I really like Chris. Having Billy back is good too, that other guy just didn't look like he fit in very well. But what I don't get is FS talking about change and having to accept that. Changing Bass players is no big deal but is something else happening? Why are they missing shows that they booked? If they are playing with Billy again I'm sure he knows all the songs since they aren't playing songs off Reach. Frankie talks about being sick in the interview, it's possible he's got something going on to keep them from touring. Personally, I haven't thought he's looked well for a long time, he's lost so much weight.

hey rebelgirl welcome to the boords, i love that song :p, I really don't know what's going on with the band, I mean you don't just let 2 of the band members go just like that... On another note, I liked FS style better like it was in the EOTT video.

BTW: check out the concert shots on this page

it seems that if you look at the Jun 24, 06 concert Dunaway is still there and they seem happy.

:delurk:

Hi, I'm the owner of the Chord & Sorcery site and I just wanted to clarify--the shots in the gallery you've linked to are from a Rock & Pop Masters concert, not an actual Survivor show. I talked to both Jimi and Barry very briefly after the concert was over but didn't get a chance to ask about whether he (Barry) was still playing with Survivor or not; I just kind of arbitrarily stuck his photos in the "Survivor" portion of the gallery because it seemed like a good idea at the time.

I just didn't want anyone taking stuff they see on my site as gospel truth--I'm really just another fan with a camera and enough HTML knowledge to be dangerous; I don't have any kind of inside track to the band or news or anything.

Then who is Survivorfan2005 talking about, letting 2 band members go in her line above? It says in the interview Dunaway was let go and Billy O was back. But why are people assuming it's Chris? If there are two members gone, who are they??

yeah, sorry I didn't clarify that. One of those galleries is RPM with JJ. Anyway, really nice site dragon, your a good photographer :) I really doubt that Chris is out of the band but it's been roumered a lot on the net lately and on the Survivor BBS as well. I think that Grove and Dunaway are great musicians. I am still skeptical about this interview though, it really dosnt soound like FS much...

Sullivan: "I'm fiercely private..." and avoiding the public spotlight??

Well that explains why there was no meet and greet after the VT show..couple of dozen people were hanging around a bit afterwards in hopes of seeing someone from the band...Should have been more like.."We love and respect our fans but we don't wish to interact with them even though they buy our records and and concert tickets.."

Just a commentary here...If I was still touring with an 80's band..this wouldn't be the wisest way to maintain fan admiration..I do respect celebrity/musician privacy but unfortunatley it's the nature of the beast for fans to want to reach out to those they admire..These guys are not exactly the latest sensation in music anymore and it's not like they're going to get accosted by mobs in true Beatles fashion..If it were me..I'd do anything to make fans happy because as Sullivan says "The fans deserve the best"...Just the way I feel about the business from years of experience on tour crews....

oh, I don't think he has bad hair. I do think Frankie hasn't been feeling well for sometime now. He has lost so much weight here in the last couple years. I know he's not the healthiest person in the world. He has never been one to come out and sign autographs, usually Marc or Chris will come out, at least in past experiences. I'm suprised they didn't.
