JJ's voice not what it used to be

Postby Poor Mans Son » Tue Jul 18, 2006 7:38 am

Just wanted to know what the general feelings are on JJ's voice. Is he performing with Voice's of Classic Rock and not Survivor because he can't carry a full set? Just wanted to know what other's think.
I think Survivor needs a breath of fresh air with a new singer, not sure about Robin but will give him a chance.

I'm of the mindset that his voice isn't what it used to be, but I don't believe that's the reason he was out of Survivor. I genuinely agree with the sentiment I heard elsewhere that it was creative and contractual issues with FS. (I forget the poster who spoke of this but my apologies for not crediting you directly). Given some of the other stuff that's gone on with the band, I would tend to believe that rather than the voice issues.

He still can carry a full set, but his quality has been lacking over the last couple of years and especially gets ragged toward the end of the set. Then again the singing style he's using lately doesn't exactly do his voice any favors. It's almost like a screaming style and that's not good for the chords.

well,it´s in the same condition as Survivor´s songwriting these days coz Reach
is filled with leftovers that didn´t make it to old Survivor albums or JJ solo efforts.
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Journey is not just a band,it´s a way of life!

It's a screaming style because he can't hit the high notes so he screams instead. He thinks no one will notice! Ha Ha

Droubay's comments about now being able to change the setlist around after a 5-year lockin to the same songs intimates to me that JJ only felt comfortable w/ the same 10-12 songs. That may have something to do with voice issues or what JJ percieved to be his own voice issues.

I saw them in '05 and I'll be honest, while JJ's voice was shot, I did really enjoy the set list....

It had Broken Promises, Summer Nights, I See You in Everyone, I'm not that Man Anymore, Caught In the Game and of course all the stuff you wouuld expect...I still don't really understand why they don't ever sing Burning Heart...it is their second biggest hit...but anyways....

JJ's voice was pretty bad...and they just looked bad....the bass player (Dunaway) and the keyboardist (Groves) pretty much made fun of Frankie during one of his 78 minute solos.....but that was after the five or six people actually watching started to raise their hands like 'what the heck' is the matter with this guy....JJ looked bad as well...not very healthy and Frankie looked like Keith Richards....I sure hope this deal breathes life back into all of them....

As for the relationship between the FS and JJ, how could it have been good? I mean that battled in court up until the second they got back together...And while Frankie was right about that, JJ managed to get the deal with Frontiers to release Empires, which wasn't anywhere near as good an album at Fire Makes Steel, yet Frankie could not get a deal....Golden Throat...yeah right...

I'd love to hear some of the bootlegges shows since JJ came back in '00. Some say he sounds great, others do not.

Some guys on the noticeboard say his refusal to quit smoking causes issues.

I love his sound on the Reach album...lower in many places, but still definately Jimi Jamison.

FS 78 minute solos are probably so JJ can rest his vocals.

i've thought of that actually...

on another note, i remember back in the 80's the biggest waste of time ever at any concert...the 15 minute bass solo....wow....bands used to love that...of course i think that was because it gave the other members time to do other things behind the stage...

If I recal, Frankie smokes, or did. Maybe he doesn't now.
