Brand New Survivor Concert Review

Postby Slander » Sat Jun 16, 2007 7:02 am

Here is a glowing Survivor concert review. They sure sound like they are high energy these days. I knew Robin was a great shot on the arm. It even mentions a new album for 2007. Fingers crossed.

K, not to be rude or anything... but WHAT THE HELL IS IN ROBIN'S PANTS in this shot??

ETA: it reminds me of that scene in "This is Spinal Tap" where the guy pulls out a foil covered cucumber from his trousers. "We have armadillos in our trousers..." ROFLMAO

WOW! LOL! Frankie looks good in this pic. I love Robin's shirts, I wonder where he gets them. He always has on the coolest shirts.

Wait. Robin is 54, Jimi is 53, but Robin is going to "breathe new life" into the band? Oh, well.

Well somebody breathed new life into his pants. That's all I'm going to say about that.

Jimi is a great vocalist but energetic on stage he is not!

Yeah, he kind of seemed a little dispassionate the last couple of times I saw him. I'd have to think he and Frankie weren't on good terms for a while, because when I saw Jimi do some shows without Survivor, he performed a lot more songs and just seemed more comfortable.

The last time i saw them the set list was great, but they seemed over it...

The thing i can remember is Barry Dunaway and Grove making fun of Frankie's 35 min guitar solo....

I can remember seeing them in '99 and wow...they rocked...hopefully they will again...

Hmmm. Lets see...JJ replaced Bickler, JJ is older and breathed new life into Survivor. Now Robin is older than JJ, yep..should work!

What do you mean? CITG tanked (although it was excellent) while VS totally NEW singer and it excelled. Or are we having a point of view problem?

I've never been able to choose between Dave and Jimi. They're both incredible. I'd rather wait for them to get together with Jim, Stephan, and the rest of the UnSullied and do a double lead singer tour than see McFraudley.

Mcauley is a talent and deserves better than the shit you continue to give him. He has been nothing but positive and has risen above the nonsense. Let's cut him some slack.

I'm just having fun, dude. You know damned well I'll be there front row center...and I'm going to be just like I always have with these guys...pre-ordering the new record and waiting like some drooling buffoon at the cafeteria lunch line. I like McAuley, but the jury is very much out as to whether he can work the material and do it any justice.

My resentment only stems from the horribly harsh treatment I received from Frankie on the old Survivor board...and I was pretty middle of the road compared to most other people. He has always rubbed me the wrong way, especially since that nonsense.

But I'll be there if they play within a few hours of me this summer or fall...

Good to see these kind of comments. We all have our preferences and grievances but we are ALL Survivor fans. Im in it for the Music. Don't think I'll ever be FS friend or anything. Just want them to play hard and bring in the crowds.

Marcel, I thought you were referring to the chaninge in 2000...I don't think that breathed new life into anything...the band was worse live, they didn't record anything for seven years...when they did it wasn't half as good as the FMS demos...

As for '84 I can't argue that commerically it breathed a different life into the band...I in know way think Vital Signs is a better album than CITG or Eye of the Tiger for that matter, but it is a good album and one of their best...it did sell better and I think much of that was the pop to it...I mean, can you imagine where High on You would have fit on CITG? And don't get me started on the next album, but it was more of a sucess than CITG as well...go figure...
I wish Dave would have never left, but he did and I'm glad they carried on with JJ. I'm very glad Dave came back, as that gave us some great boots with him, as nothing seems to exist from the first stint.

At any rate, I was referring to the second change...

Sorry for disagreeing in parts but they start live very good in 2000. Saw them a couple of times in 2000 and 2001 and they rocked! Don´t know what happened later, a friend of mine told me the gig at the Arrow Festival in Netherland was horrible.

But finally you´re right, it didn´t breathe much life into the band. The Reach record wasn´t better than the FMS Demos.

looking back i saw them once in Orlando with the Outfield in that time frame and they were good...then I saw them in Orlando with Reo and Styx and they were terrible...

Hey Eyeof,

I'm not sure that VS sold better than Tiger. I know Tiger charted higher but I'm not sure of its staying power like Vital Signs. Does anyone have final sales figures for both?

Slander...

I have an idea...you take Vital Signs...seed the songs from top to bottom...1 through 9...with 1 being the best...

I'll do the same from Eye of the Tiger and we'll debate from 9 vs. 9 etc...maybe even pole each one or something...should be good for some friendly debate...

What you think?

Here is how I rank the Tiger songs...

1. Eye of the Tiger (Just has to be the top)
2. Silver Girl
3. I'm Not that Man Anymore
4. Ever Since the World Began
5. The One That Really Matters
6. Feels Like Love
7. Hesitation Dance
8. Children of the Night
9. American Heartbeat

man that is a great album....

I think it is solid start to finish. Love the intro to children of the night. The only song I don't care for is Feels like love. It feels like filler to me. I know they did it in concert but I just never cared for it. As for VS. Here we go:

1. I Can't Hold Back-The first release off the album. It would have been number 1 had the CITG not flopped. Radio was slow on it. It really took time to build a following. I think one of the best aor songs of all time. A friggin masterpiece.
2. I See You In Everyone-Mickey Thomas makes the song for me. His background is a great hook
3. High On You-A pop classic
4. Broken Promises-Actually thought this could have been a single
5. Search Is Over-Great song. Wish it hadn't been overplayed and on every love song compilation! Ruined the song for me. Nonetheless I recogrnize it's greatness
6. First Night-Great Hook in the song. Peterik and Sullivan to a great job building tension in their music and then doing something out of left field
7. Everlasting-Not single material but not filler.
8. Singer Not The Song-I don't love this song but I don't hit skip either. A fun song if you are on a drive
9. Popular Girl-Fun pop tune. Jamo sounds a little to cheesy on this one for me.

This is a terrific album. I like Tiger better but that doesn't mean Tiger is better.

Yep, the coolest. I assume it's Frankie on that atmospheric little acoustic part. Like First Night, it starts to lead you down the path of ballad, then just explodes with Frankie's axe out of nowhere.

So then the first would be nine seeds American Heartbeat vs. Popular Girl...

To me they are both popish type songs...in fact this might be a pop as they went with Bickler on vox...I read an interview where Jimi Jamison said he was concerned about joining a pop band in '84, as he was a rocker, but I don't think they were that pop at the time....

As anyrate, both of these songs are injoyable and simple...Neither are great or bad and I'd have to call that matchup a complete draw, as neither pulls away to me...

Slander? anyone else....

8 seeds...

The Singer Not the Song vs. Childern of the Night...

I'd have to go clearly here with Children....as someone said..great into...then it slams into Survivor rocking at its best....

"The Singer" is a good tune, but I find no special quality in it for me...i know jamo heads will disagree to a point, but I don't think that "Singer" is a bad song...it's just not as good a Survivor track as Childern of the Night...

7 seeds...

Hesitation Dance vs. Everlasting...

Hard to compare these two songs...Hesitation is a rocker...Everlasting much slower, but probably a better song...except for Red the ballad hater...this one is hard to me...i'll have to think on it....
