Question For Joe Vana

Postby Slander » Fri Sep 14, 2007 1:48 am

Hey Joe,

Caught In The Game is my favorite Survivor album. I thought I read somewhere where you met JP back in those days. Did you sit in on the sessions etc? Just curious. I love the vibe on that record.

I met Jim in the Tiger days....1983 or so....he was a mentor, confidant and a close close friend....the internet has our complete story of how we met...in fact my interview a few years past spells it out....CITG was a great album...actually I LOVE ALL of Survivors albums...but, WSC is my favorite...it has a sheen too it, and a vibe I really love to this day...it is their best sounding (sonically, engineered and produced) album along with THTS.....

Mecca is flying along...Frankie has been incredible to work with on all fronts...he is a real driver in the studio and really gets what he wants out of singers....I will have a tune to post within a few weeks featuring Frankies handywork....

I guess we can use this thread to keep you up to date on Mecca and the progress.....

Hello Joe! Thanks for the wonderful hospitality a few years back before a Night Ranger concert with my girlfriends at your restaurant! I had the headache, remember? Maybe you don't. Anyway, is Frankie playing guitar on the new Mecca also? Maybe this is answered somewhere but I've been swamped at work, no time to look for it.

Joe love Mecca 1. I have to ask you what track did you enjoy singing the most? Great passion on the record! Silence of the Heart is amazing. I love Falling Down too.

The song Mecca....it is the most like what I envisioned the album to be...sonically and emotionally....Falling down was very much a Hall and Oates meets Toto tune...and Silence was a fun tune....but Mecca was the fashizzle for me.....

WSC is not my favorite Survivor album, but I totally agree on it being the best production of any of their albums.

I recently mentioned that THTS is also very well produced, but that it lacks volume, you have to crank up the dial to get the same volume out of it that you would get out of WSC at a lower volume.

That is completely ON PURPOSE.....

Listen to Toto's "The Seventh One"....same thing....

It lowers the noise floor and it is done on purpose, and the recording has life then, less digital hash.....

Hi Joe. I think the song Mecca sounds very much like "I will remember". Was it on purpose? Or am I off on all these counts?

BTW, I used to be on your earlier Mecca board, this is just my pseudonym.

Yes it is....when Luke first heard it...I will quote him..."that song sounds familiar....hahahahah".....I had Shannon Forrest play the drum beat differently than written, and different from the demo....He is a HUGE Toto fan and the best shuffle player in the world right now, and sounds JUST LIKE JEFF....anyway....we copped the drum beat from Toto...I pay homage to them with that....

Man...they rock!!!

Hi Joe,

I love your first record much. Do you have an official release date for the second? I read somewhere that you asked Fergie for singing one song on the new album, will it happen? After you worked with Fergie on the first album and with Bobby Kimball on the second is there a chance for a collaboration with Joseph Williams on the third?

That's cool Joe. M/w I think Simon is a great drummer but there'll be only one Jeff. 15 years ago he left the earth but it'll never be the same without Jeff P.

Another thing I'd like to ask you (as I don't seem to find much interest from others about it) is that Fergie Fredrickssen (sp?) did background vocals for Survivor in the "eye" album. Any idea how Fergie go that job? Asking this since Fergie worked with you. Just wondering. Another one of Survivor's forte was matching the right background vocals. Fergie was excellent for them IMO.

Yes....Fergie said he would do one with me....we are cool...as far as Joseph I don't know him...I like to work with friends and guys I know well....This is all about Vibe with Mecca, and if we aren't buds it will show...I think Joseph is amazing, I just don't really know him....i think alot of the reason besides the fact he is a monster producer, that it is going so well with Frankie is that we get on so well...he truly is a wonderful human being.....

We should be done by probably mid October?? give or take a century....hahaahah....no mid October or so.....

Thanks man!!!!

I will get an answer from Frankie.....or Fergie directly.....I think Frankie was friends with Fergie through msfunk...and that's how it happened....but I will find out.....

And to your other point yes, they had amazing background vocals.....think of these former Survivor background singers....Richard Page, Kevin Cronin, Fergie....Mickey Thomas!!!.......YIKES......

Hey Joe,

I am not a musician so I don't know how to put this in words. I have claimed that FS is essentinal to the signature Survivor sound many times. I can recognize FS stuff instantly. What is it that I am trying to say? Is it the harmonies the melodies or what? I've always said that Survivor isn't Survivor with FS. Can you tell me what I hear. How he puts its mark on the sound. I was listening to Oceans in the car today. Wow. I also loved his work with Eddie Money and Heart. He doesn't get enough credit. I also thought Talkin' Bout Love was the best thing on REACH.

I will do my best to answer this.....

Frankie as the guitar player and producer of most of Survivor's stuff does have an enormous impact on their sound....he is a VERY distinctive player...he really was I would say if you add up all that he did probably 55% of their sound if you add in the production...his guitar voicings and use of vibrato and his great clean tone are all a testament to his talent and prowess....without him musically they are not Survivor....Jamo and Dave had a great deal of the "recognizable" sound of the band when they were there as well....Robin is a monster in his own right, but it is different than the other guys...not better or worse, but different....

Without Frankie Survivor ceases to exist...and because he is still out there playing 40 - 50 dates a year he is keeping the name, and Brand of Survivor alive......

What would Toto be without Luke???

Nuff said....

And you even forgot to mention Tommy Shaw and Tom Kelly.

And then mix that in with the excellent backing vocals by Peterik, Sullivan, Bickler and Jamison.

Jimi had Bobby Kimball sing backing vocals on one of his songs on the Empires CD.

Journey have always been great for the backing vocals as well, with guys like Perry, Rolie, Cain and Schon.

I've always felt that Frankie is one of the most underated guitarists in the world.
He may not have the technical ability of someone like Allan Holdsworth, Neal Schon and Steve Lukather, or the speed of Malmsteen, Mclaughlin or Schon, but as you pointed out, all of those aspects of his playing that you mentioned makes him one of the best in my book! Great tone, great melody, great feel for the blues, one of the best riff players, that's why he's behind only Neal Schon on my list of favorite guitarists. I know that Frankie has named Clapton, Beck, Page and Blackmore as being 4 of his favorite players, and Schon has named Clapton, Beck, Page and Hendrix as 4 of his favorites, so they've been influenced by many of the same players.

I completely agree....he has amazing touch and feel.....he has that intangable ability to make anything sound great!! He surely is not the fastest, most technical...but feel and taste is everything....and that puts him right up there with Luke to me......

Very nice of you JV. Look forward to the info. I am embarrassed to say that I've not heard of Msfunk but just checked them out. I guess its the fraternity all these guys have, its not surprising they will take turns being part of each others bands, whether its full members or part time, background, or what have you.Tommy Shaw is another a BIG part of it (see Im learning slow but steadily Ha ha!)

MSFunk was a great Chicago band with a great pedigree.....Tommy Shaw, Fergie Frederiksen and even the great (and really nice guy) Mike Borch of the Ides of March on drums...they played alot around here....too bad I was too young to see them, but I have some old cassettes of them, and they were really tight....

Take Care guys.....I'm off to the studio....

JV

JV

Today Only.....I just posted a new tune up on our myspace tune....everybody has been asking for something with vocals...well here it is...I will take it down tomorrow morning.....ROUGH MIX.....but nonetheless here it is....

Hi Joe,

it was discussed here on the forum before, maybe you know it exactly. Did Dave Bickler recorded before he left the band the first time the songs "Broken Promises" and "I see you in everyone" or other songs of the Vital Signs album?

I'd also like to know as well. Meanwhile, I heard that Vital Signs was written specifically for Dave's vocals.

I always wondered that also. I met Dave Bicklers younger brother in 1995 I think at a local huge summer festival and he said his brother did a few of those demo's for Vital Signs but who knows...he was like a few people that day to busy trashing Jamo for calling himself Survivor and playing that gig. Nice guy and he looked SO much like Dave.

. I often wondered the same thing you guys did but having listened to it for 22 yrs most of those songs I just can't see them writing for DB. Wayyy to sugary and poppy and its my least favorite album by them BY FAR.

NO guitars on much of it..lacked fire n balls of the first 4 but its there biggest success. Proof positive to me that if Scotti bros. weren't so busy chopping off this or that n bustin' noses they could've had more hits with Survivor if they put some juice behind other singles and albums.
