bulldog wrote::D For the fans of melodic rock ! Jimi Jamison was and will always be the true voice of Survivor. People on this board want him to sound as if it was 1984 all over again . Jimi is almost 60 years old ! In 2007 you can put Lou Gramm , Eddie Money , Rod Stewart , Steve Perry and John Wetton in concert and have them play all their classic hits live and Jimi Jamison would still blow them all away. I have heard and seen all of them enough times to realize this.
Survivor was not successful until Eye Of The Tiger ! I understand all the fans loving Dave Bickler and the old sound of Survivor but that sound and style of music wasn't breaking through with bands like Foreigner , Boston , Eddie Money Loverboy and Journey controlling the air waves . It was the power ballad type of rock that captured the audience and Jim Peterik was responsible for that sound.
People say that Jimi Jamison is at 75% I"d like to disagree ! Reach was not a good record by the standards of Vital Signs and When Seconds Count . Too Hot To Sleep was a awesome cd but it got no airplay in the USA.
Has anyone heard of RPM Concerts? Check out the cd if you can find it and listen to Jimi sing High On You , The Search Is Over and Eye Of The Tiger and then tell me he can't sing anymore. Jimi is also on a Tribute To Larry Finch cd doing a different version of Eye Of The Tiger .
Come Dancing is a cool tune that Peterik penned and Jimi sounds great on it. It isn't a full throttle rock song it is a country style ballad . Why is that bad ? Survivor will never again have a hit song on the radio in the USA and that is sad to say but nevertheless true.
Survivor to me was Burning Heart , The Search Is Over , I Can't Hold Back, Rebel Son , Is this Love , & High On You and I wanna hear Jamo singing them and Peterik playing them !
Jimi Jamison is my #1 favorite singer of all time, with some of my next favorite being Steve Perry, Lou Gramm, Dave Bickler, Joe Lynn Turner, Mike Reno and Paul Rodgers.
Obviously Jimi has lost some of his range, but as you pointed out he's in his late 50's, and
ALL Rock singers are going to lose some range as they get older.
Jimi
STILL has great soul to his singing and he's still better than 99% of the singers out there. I think Jimi still has a lot more left to his voice than Steve Perry, and I'm almost as big of a Steve Perry fan. Lou Gramm has also lost a lot in recent years, but in his defense he did have MAJOR health problems, and major surgery, so it's completely understandable that he wouldn't be able to sing like he used to!
I do think that Dave Bickler deserves a lot of credit though as having been a huge part of Survivor!
Frankie and Jim were even more important to the Survivor sound than Jimi, and thats coming from one of the biggest Jamison fans in the world. Jimi brought in a whole new group of fans of the band, but I can also tell you that there are a hell of a lot of people who prefer Dave over Jimi. They both are great singers, and Survivor is lucky to have had both of them in the band.
Even though I am a slightly bigger fan of Jimi's singing over Dave's I prefered when Survivor had that raw and Rocking street sound that they had in the Bickler days of the band, although THTS somewhat brought back that sound and ranks in a 2-way tie with CITG as my favorite Survivor album.
