Ides of March -- Vehicle

Postby montyollie » Sun Nov 25, 2007 11:22 pm

When I got obsessed with Survivor last year, I got my hands on everything that any of the guys did, in the band, solo or with other bands, and I did get a copy of "Vehicle" by Ides of March (Peterik) but I never much cared for it.

Until today!!

I'm a huge fan of that British show called "Strictly Come Dancing" (British Dancing with the Stars) and one of the contestants is 20 year old Matt Di Angelo. He stars on "Eastenders". He's been showing real promise on the show, and this week he did the salsa to "Vehicle" and scored 38 out of 40, with two perfect 10s from two of the judges.

It's peformed by the house band, but it was great. I smell a slight resurgence in this song's popularity!

When I was 15 years old back in 1987, I was already a huge Survivor fan, but I didn't know very much about the backgrounds of the guys other than that they were bassed in Chicago. I had all their albums and new all of the guys names, but that was about it.

But in 1987 I found out that Jim Peterik had been in a band called The Ides Of March and that they had had a huge hit called Vehicle. And I found out that Jimi Jamison had been in a band called Cobra.

So I went to a local record store and I asked the guy if they had anything by a band called Cobra. The guy asked me if I was asking about the band that Jimi Jamison had been in, and I said yes. He then said that no, they didn't have anything from Cobra. So then I asked if they had anything by a band called The Ides Of March, at which point he said "Ah, your a Survivor fan." Anyway, he said that no, they didn't have any Ides Of March stuff either.

So much to my surprise I soon there-after found the Cobra album on cassette tape at a different store. And shortly after that I found out that my own neighbor had it on Record and in mint condition, which he then sold to me.

I was soon there-after also able to find the Ides Of March Vehicle album on record at a record convention, and over the next two years after that I tracked down all of their albums.

At first I wasn't thrilled with the Ides stuff because I was into much more Rocking music than they were. But it didn't take long for me to start to love the Vehicle song. Over the years I've grown to like all of the Ides stuff a lot more than I used to. A little over a year ago I went to an Ides Of March concert in Akron Ohio and I loved the show they put on. Plus as an added bonus, they did several Survivor and 38 Special songs. Here in Cleveland there are many different cover bands that play the song Vehicle, including some of my friends bands.

My advice on the Ides albums is don't compare it to Survivor or any other bands that you like, just enjoy it for what it is, which is also really good, just a lot different than Survivor.
