It's an awesome song, I love it!

It should have been on Survivor's first album right from the start. In later years it was added to the first album, but that wasn't until about 15 years after the album was first released.

They should have also had their original version of Rockin Into The Night on the first album. The band wanted to have it on the album, but they were given bad advice that they listened to and they didn't wind up with it on the album.

Of course, as you may know, it became a hit for the band 38 Special.

Just as if 38 special would have not had a hit had they done Tiger....I think Rockin' was better served with 38 doing it....

My opinion of course.....

I like it...like the breakdown in the second half The Ultimates version is terrific, too.

That's one of the best Greatest Hits ever assembled.

Well, there are a couple of things that I like better about 38 Special's version of the song, but overall I do like Survivor's a little better.

I like that Frankie played a bit more guitar on their version than 38 did on their's.

There are some added female backing vocals on Survivor's version, right? I don't really care for those female backing vocals.

It would be real hard for them to fuck that up....I like...at least like, every tune they ever did....pretty pathetic I know, but they literally could have taken any grouping of tunes and I would have been happy....

Plus, I can't find my copy of WSC....my favorite album of theirs....the production, the guitars....the sound overall....and Jamo killed on that album as well....

Bought it the day it came out in 2004 and would be going to buy it again same day if anything ever happened to it.

Cover art is stunning, remastering/sound superior (Burning Heart, Eye, Caught all sound scary good), the pix and and interviews (very in-depth) are terrific. First class job.

It certainly is a great compilation, scandalous that another Best Of appeared in 2006 after Reach, far inferior.
It would have been good to have a dvd of the promos released at the same time as Ultimate I always thought.

Jeremy Holiday wrote:Thanks again, it's great to know that the CD is being appreciated. The goal with "Ultimate Survivor" was to make it be a real album, not just another compilation. Something that fans could sink their teeth into, after not having a new album for so long.

One interesting tidbit ... 2 weeks before the CD was due for release (after all packaging had been reviewed by the guys and gone into production), Survivor's rep got in touch to say that Frankie wanted to add 2 new songs: "One More Chance" and "Fire Makes Steel" (with Jamo). At the time, we only knew the Dave "FMS," and it was my favorite unreleased Survivor song. I was disappointed that we couldn't get a Jamo redo of "FMS" on there, but it was too late, the records had already been pressed. Of course, those tunes were eventually released on Reach about 2 years later. And in the end, I thought the redone "Fire Makes Steel" was nowhere near as good as the original demo, so I was glad that things turned out as they did with "Ultimate Survivor."

Jeremy congrats. You should be extremely proud of this effort. It really does the story. I wish Dave's FMS could have made the cut. It's clear the song was written with his voice in mind. Regardless I do like JJ's effort on the song. I also think it's interesting that FMS and One More Chance were ready for ULTIMATE. Wow they already had those songs in the can 2 years before REACH was put out. So much for REACH being rushed. Anyway as a Survivor fan I will be forever in your debt for this fine effort. Was there ever talk of a dvd?

Hey JV,

I like WSC as well. Not my favorite. Some friends of mine think WSC was too feminine for them following VS. I don't get it. Why do people have the impression that it was too poppy. I'd like to hear a theory from an actual musician.

The very first Survivor Greatest hits album that was released here in the USA was very poorly done.

The second version, that's the one that included the songs "You Know Who You Are" and "Hungry Years" was a huge improvement over the first one. I remember that about a month before the second greatest hits CD was released I had heard that there would be two previously unreleased songs on it, but that they were going to be "Rebel Girl" and "Rockin Into The Night." Then about a week later I found out that those two weren't going to be on the album, and that it was going to be the two completely brand new songs. I was thrilled to have two brand new songs, but I was also disappointed that they weren't going to release "Rebel Girl" and "Rockin Into The Night."

Ultimate Survivor is a great release. It's even better than the second version of Survivor's Greatest Hits which was very good. And it was great to finally get to hear Survivor's original version of "Rockin Into The Night."

Jimi Jamison is my #1 favorite singer of all time, with Dave Bickler also being in my top 5. But I agree that the version of "Fire Makes Steel" that they demoed with Dave on vocals was even better than the Jimi version that is on the "Reach" CD. I think I also prefer the demo version of "Nevertheless" over the one that's on the "Reach" CD? Dave also did a great job on his version of "Seconds Away."

WSC is not one of my favorite Survivor albums either, but I kind of would put up there on the same level as Vital Signs, at least when I'm in a WSC mood. To me, Vital Signs was such a fun, happy, upbeat album, whereas WSC is somewhat darker in mood at times. In my own personal opinion WSC is NOT any more "feminine" than Vital Signs. Now truth be told, THTS and CITG are my two favorite Survivor albums. I love it when the band really Rocks.

Hey Journey,

It's interesting. I really turned a lot of my male friends onto Survivor after VS. These were the guys into RUSH, DIO, SABBATH, etc. They thought Survivor sounded a lot like Journey. Then after WSC they thought Survivor wimped out. I think IS THIS LOVE as the first single didn't help! Great song but it is adult contemporary for sure. All my male friends quit listening. Your thoughts?

I have several friends who are huge fans of both Rush and Survivor. When I think of a tougher sounding Survivor album I think of the first 4 and also THTS. I don't think of Vital Signs.

Like I said, I have friends who love both Rush and Survivor. But one time a friend of mine was at a record convention and he overheard the guy next to him asking the dealer if he had any Rush. Then my friend asked the dealer if he had anything of Survivor. When the Rush fan heard my friend ask about Survivor he laughed and the rolled his eyes. I have many of Rush's albums too, and I've gone to a few of their concerts. But I sometimes get pissed about some of the arrogance of SOME Rush fans.

Back in the late 80's I had a bunch of friends that were into Iron Maiden and Van Halen. They would make fun of Survivor all the time. But when THTS came out I played that for them and they loved it. They also liked some of the Bickler era stuff after that.

I had THTS playing in my car and a friend of mine who wasn't listening closely actually thought it was Motley Crue! LOL. True story. No he didn't think JJ sound like VN. He thought the guitar sounded a lot like Crue.

Funny you say that, because a friend of mine at that time thought that Frankie's guitar playing on "She's A Star" reminded him a little of Motley Crue's "Girls Girls Girls" song.

Red I really love this album. I was heart broken when the band went in a different direction. Yes VS is great but I love the gritty sound the band had at one time. Street tough etc. Some people have called half-life a rip-off of American Heartbeat. I couldn't disagree more.

I think that Caught in the Game is as good of an album as there ever was...And Dave, even on slow stuff like 'I never stopped Loving you' rocks...he makes a ballad like that, even tough...

I to this day, would take out a second loan on the house to have a Dave Bickler version of Vital Signs...

We all like to knock on WSC, and I agree, "Is This Love" is just waaaay too much, but over all with Back Street Love Affair and a couple of others, the album is to say the least solid...

I really could not get as much into THTS at the time, but at that time I had gotten really into Van Halen and Motley Crue and such, since then I can appreciate it is a bad ass album.

To be honest, it was hearing Dave's versions of a couple of the songs (Burning Bridges mainly) that really madde me realize how rocking those are...

I don't think any voice ever rocked more than Bicklers....

Amen. There is something about Dave that fit the band perfect. I was just listening to Nothing Can Shake me on the way into work. Without question on overlooked gem. Whatever It Takes of the debut is another classic!

I think VS would have been a great album with Dave on vocals. I also think it would have sold well.

My favorite tune off of WSC is Oceans. Frankies guitar in the beginning. Damn! Magic. Did Dave ever do Oceans? I would kill to hear that.

I think Jackie Don't Go seems to be a cult classic for Survivor fans? I've never heard a Survivor fan say that they don't love that song.

I love Half Life. Frankie's solo on it is very blusy with great tone. One friend of mine who is a huge Survivor fan says that it's his least favorite song off of CITG though. I think Peterik said he had had a bit to drink when he wrote the lyrics?
