Remaster The Catalogue For Release

Postby Red13JoePa » Thu May 08, 2008 1:20 am

While we're waiting for the next proverbial shoe to drop, how about remastering and rereleasing the catalogue?

I mean for wide distribution in the US. Journey recently did it.

The albums need it. Scotti Brothers being defunct, I assume, and maybe Joe Vana can weigh in on this, that Frankie and maybe Peterik are sole custodians of the catalogue now, so they're free to do this if they want.
Frankie is clearly more than competent behind the control board.

I guess they'd have to secure some distribution for it, maybe the label that put out Ultimates? They could do just straight remasters only or get more busy and put bonus tracks like demos and stuff on there.

As I recall it this project WAS on the table for Japan only earlier this decade but plans got shelved.

Back catalog is owned by Sony BMG, and it is all currently in print at the moment.

They may be in print but they're not doing anything with it.

The last 2 albums I saw on the shelf were VS at Fye about 3-4 years ago, Too Hot @ Best Buy 3-4 years ago.

Maybe if Frankie approached them...who knows.

I have been thinking about this too,the back catalogue does need the full remaster with bonus track treatment. The back catalogue was re-released in Japan in 1999,I got them all and the new compilation Special Selection that came out with them. This was because the Empires, Jimi Jamison album was being billed as a Survivor album I believe and the label thought there would be interest.
In 2001 there was talk of a rare tracks Japan thing but it got shelved, and a live in Japan too that eventually came out as Extended Versions.
Just to finish EOTT was re-released and remastered in Nov 2006 for a Japan release,it sounds great but has no bonus tracks.
What has always shocked me is that members of the band did not know about the best of that came out in 2006,or were aware of some of the other compilations :o

A BAND authorized Greatest Hits with a then and now CD.....A full 12 song CD and a 5 or 6 song ep on current stuff they are doing.....AND artwork that has the flair of old.....plus a "where are they now section on ALL the previous members.....

I ADORE the whole idea of your proposition, Joe Vana.

But I zero in the above as of particular intrigue to me.

Bands have done this and it's gone over well.

Starship has a re-recorded hits album done in 2002.
Disc 1 of Journey's forthcoming Revelation is 11 brand new takes on perry-era tracks...

Survivor's already gone the route of having McCauley lay vox down over FMS and Eye....

Why the hell not? Redo the GH with brand new takes done with the current lineup while we wait for new stuff.

RM sounds different enough that it is absolutely warranted.

Can't be as grueling as making a new record and I bet they'd have a blast revisiting the shit not to mention I'd love to hear the Sullivan/Droubay takes and what they'd add to those all these years on.
