Survivor to Play...Dickinson, North Dakota? (UPDATE)

Postby weatherman90 » Wed Jun 18, 2008 9:49 am

Alright, so I got my daily alert from Pollstar today, and sure enough Survivor was on it again as they had added another date. I scroll all the way down, and it turns out that the band will be in Dickinson, North Dakota on September 20 at some auditorium.

I was hoping they would come to my state, but Dickinson is a city with about 10,000 people. You could draw a circle with a radius of 100 miles out from the city and there wouldn't even be 75,000 people in it. It is the most sparsely populated area of one of the most sparely populated states in the country, and I don't know what kind of a crowd they are expecting.

It's a little happy and a little sad at the same time. I wish Peterik, Bickler, and Jamison could reform Survivor so they could actually be a decent opener for a band like Styx or Journey or Def Leppard.

I'm glad I get to see Survivor but it would be so much better if it was with the true voices of Survivor and the songwriting genius Peterik. Frankie is a great guitarist, but it just isn't the same.

It'll NEVER be the same. But for me the true genius was in the first 3 albums.

Amen....It doesn't get much better than those first three albums. It's the heart and soul of Survivor. It's what the band was at its core. Tough, street, and gritty as hell.

I just contacted the Dickinson State University which is hosting the concert and apparently due to the expenses of hauling in lighting and other equipment for the SURVIVOR show, they have booked the IDES OF MARCH instead.

I was kind of surprised about this for one reason - why did the organizer go from Survivor to the Ides of March? I thought they would pick some other random nostalgia act, but instead they kept it in the Survivor family. The organizer must be a pretty big fan of the melodic rock genre to even know who Jim Peterik or the Ides are, let alone that they are still touring.

Either that or Frankie referred the organizer to the more affordable Peterik, which I think is unlikely given that they don't seem to be the best of friends.

ANYWAY....looks like I'll be seeing Jim instead of Frankie. Survivor would have been fun, but I think I would rather see a MR legend like Peterik. I'm ordering "Above the Storm" in case I'm able to get it signed. It's a small show at a very odd venue (a university's "Family Fun Night") so I'm thinking that it won't be hard to meet the guy.

Oh man, give me any of JP's bands over current Survivor any day of the week. You lucked out!

I love Frankie's playing and it would be incredible to see Bickler, Jamo, JP, and Frankie all up there together again. Right now, I'd see Survivor if they came within 20 minutes of me and it was a $10 or $15 ticket, but other than that, I have 0 interest in seeing Mcvivor. No offense to Robin, he's just not Survivor material.

Anyway, if you haven't heard Above The Storm, you're in for a treat. Great album.

The Ides sign autographs after every show....just find the mersh booth and they be there after. Usually Jim makes an announcement from the stage telling people to go there, they'd love to meet them.

Firstly.....Survivor commands way more $$$ than the aforementioned acts and travels with a crew...they are a worldwide brand, and bring in more people.....they have the same agent in some circles, I think that is probably what happened, plus IOM was probably free that day....I think it's safe to say that the people there will still hear Survivor material, even though Survivor will be at home....

Secondly....again....the whole heart and sole stuff.....Peterik was a COwriter in Survivor....COwriter....Sullivan was a COwriter.....peanut butter and jelly guys.....without both you just have a handful of stuff...

And as far as autographs well the IOM guys will sign for days and be more than happy too....GREAT bunch of guys!!!!

Sounds great - I can't wait for the show. It seems like Jim rarely leaves Illinois so I'm glad that I will get to catch him.

Now that I looked into it, both are managed by Paradise Artists, so that must be the connection.

Why isn't JJ coming to England? Is it for the same reasons Survivor didn't do their short European tour a couple of years back?

It is very hard to get guarenteed money from Promoters when they don't know if 10, 50, 100 or 500 will show up for shows......the market sucks right now out there for live gigs.....

That's why I don't blame bands one bit for playing fests, fairs, etc. They get to play in front of a lot of people and get guaranteed money. Plus as a fan I don't mind it because usually the admission is really cheap.

Joe....Back on topic here......not sure I understand why survivor would have to be cancelled and someone else brought in. The poster says it had to do with the expenses of lighting and other equiptment. HUH?????? You still have to bring in Lighting and PA for whomever you have. What other stuff did survivor want? I can't imagine that they would want some idiotic lighting system used at Donnington or something. Remember this is a band who is playing a bunch of fest and the likes. All of those types of shows have a very basic local lighting company do their shows and the lights are more than servicable.
Could there be something else in play here? Not meaning anything specific, but there has to be more to this story than we are hearing. Is it possible that money is in play here? Meaning survivor wanted too much? Could it be a situation where they(survivor) just flat out cancelled a gig for whatever reason?

This happened before, and Jamison was called on to replace them.

That said, I'd sooner pay to see Survivor, even in current form, than I would say The Police who I also like, that's just how much I like Survivor. Wish they'd realize that there are MANY people like us out here on the coasts and book more....

I missed Hershey as I was on vacation that week.

Yea...it ws because of lighting.....hahahahahah

There always is more to do with it.....but I digress....Survivor is still a worldwide brand....they still play casinos for booku bucks....they play medium to large fests and are usually the main act....that being said I really don't know the reason on this one.....I will look into it....but remember, ALOT of band actually LOSE money on some gigs...It happends all the time.....

Frankie and I have discussed that very topic.....he is all about what the people want to see......but as a whole, not just the 30 or 40 people in this message board....that being said, he is very aware of what we (the mr.com survivor message board members) because I tell him!!!

MarcelJordan, I am sure Joe HAS passed on to Frankie many a bash levied by myself, EyeOf and Axe, among the rest.
I'll stand by them and extend Frankie credit for not attempting to silence us through Joe (even though Slander has deemed that none of us drone fans here matter a lick to Frankie in his ivory tower).

Also, hopefully he's passed on the positive stuff I've said both about Survivor and Frankie in particular as a player and writer.

Listen Guys.....I think 99% of the stuff on here has merit and value....I respect ALL of your opinions and ideas....yes, I do know maybe a bit more ;-) of the inside stuff, but that is THEIR business and not meant to be posted on here....and if you think for one second that JJ, JP and FS have no idea what goes on in here, well....

They gave us their heart and soul....and at times it gets trampled on in here....but usually things get righted and we move on....I am a FAN first, yea, I worked with JP for a LONG time and still with FS (great guy I'm telling you)...but I am always interested in what my peers (you guys) think too.....

I would NEVER think of silencing anyone on here or condone it either (censoring creates drones with lack of real opinion, and the party line is what you are left with)...we need the good with the bad.....the positive with the negative....we actually do need Slander opposing Red, or Eye or me....it's gives balance....NEITHER of them are wrong...OPINIONS are never wrong....FACTS can be wrong, but I hardly ever see anybody claiming facts....

So keep on keeping on guys.....what is done in here matters, and in the end it does shape what we will eventually get out of the band and it's ex members.....they would be nutty to dispell it all....
