My first Survivor Show since 1996....

Postby Joe Vana » Wed Jul 09, 2008 5:38 am

Hi Guys....

I don't get out much....I have the restaurant, recording, my son and GF....but I finally got out to see a show....Frankie has been tuning me up about the new keyboardist and how great it is to work with Robin, so I thought I would be objective and go see em....

Here is my review, and I will be as brutally honest as I can...

Firstly, I hung around way outta the way with Joey (my son) so FS would not know I was there....when the show started we made our way to stage right over by Frankies mic stand....and the show began....LOUD as Hell and the sound guy was having a hard time with the mids...but First Night was the first tune....I kept an open mind about Robin, NOT as a singer but as a fit for the band...within 5 minutes that was all gone....he was an amazing showman and really stepped up the energy I was used to with Survivor....as far as a fit I feel as a singer he has amazing control, great pitch and has taken care of himself and his instrument very well.....he hit the C's with ease and had alot in the tank....ALL the tunes were in the original keys and it really made the tunes jump....TSIO is a rough tune to pull off, Robin sang it flawlessly but as far as tone for that tune, well that is an opinion call...He sucked the crowd in so well I doubt ANY casual fan that was there would have doubted he sang it originally....

So...I won't grade him (rude for a singer to grade another) but I was totally convinced, and he seemed like a really good dude....and you can see the respect between he and FS....can't fake that shit with me....

FS played wonderfully....but his tone was what nabbed it for me, he has a unique sound all to himself, and it is in his hands, not the gear....he was not feeling 100% but his playing was monsterous....you can see a million people cover their tunes but without his tone, sensibility and feel it is just kareoke.....musically speaking they are one in their own, no peer for their tunes....and his vibrato is chilling.....

Mark...this is the first time I have EVER heard him play live...all I can say is SOLID....no crazy chops, but completely sets a pocket for Billy to jump in, I was very impressed with his power as well......Burning Bridges SMOKED.....Billy was solid as well.....they gel well...

The new keyboardist I can't put my finger on....but, he is new....at times he was rocking in the zone, other times he was a bit out of the box.....his solo threw me off a bit when he played the theme from the Simpsons....but he is a young guy and with time should be a great addition...he defiantely is a talented player....

I really enjoyed it, and I usually don't go out to see bands much....

Great to see that Frank gives a young Keyboarder this chance. Maybe it gives the band new vibes an younger people can relate with the band.
Joe...had they play a lot of rare stuff they never played live?....

JV that was exactly my impression when I saw Robin last August. I will be honest it took me awhile to get used to his vocals but once I quit the comparisons to former singers the whole thing really worked for me. I think he adds an energy and a showmanship the band has lacked. Thank you for sharing. I wish others would see Robin in action before making judgments.

Nice to see your "review" there Joe!

I like this part the most: ALL the tunes were in the original keys and it really made the tunes jump....

Also this I agree with: He sucked the crowd in so well I doubt ANY casual fan that was there would have doubted he sang it originally....

That's the thing with Robin's style on TSIO, he makes it his own, with the respect for the tune and its feel unblemished.

Its great to know Robin has the power, has the control to manage credibly Survivor stuff.

Thanks Joe!

I really couldn't agree more with your observation Marcel. To be honest the casual fan doesn't know the difference between Bickler, Jamison, or McAuley. Robin is making the material his own. He is making the stage his own. McAuley's presence is amazing. I can't wait to see his talents translated into a new Survivor record. I really believe FS and Robin's collaboration on "Business As Usual" gives a great insight into what a new Survivor record will sound like. If that is the case we will be in for an amazing start to a new chapter in the Survivor legacy.

Wow now there's a shock. It didn't work for you. Who would have thought since all of your posts have been so supportive of the band's current efforts.

Jman...i guess you are not entitled to any opionion of your own. Next time please consult dooful, i mean Slander, before arriving at an opionon of your own. If Slander at first doesn't answer, don't worry. He'll get back to you as soon as he pulls his head out of Frankie ass.....

Beyond the continued frustration of having to hear Slander predend he knows it all...

Joe it is great to hear your review...I've seen the band quite a few times and at times the energy was wonderful and at times the energy was really bad...the last time in 2001, it was not very good, so an influx of energy could be awesome...

I also think that with some new material, we'd get off of McAuley's back somewhat...I'm almost sure his style would force better stuff than reach.

I liken it a bit to John Corabi in Motley Crue. I loved tha album. Now if all he had done was tour with Motley sporadically playing Vince's stuff, it would have been awful. But mixed in with his own stuff, it was awesome.

Maybe it's near the same with McAuley....I sure hope one day we'll see.

I will say in the boots, while i have not really liked his voice, the band seemed more tight than in 2001.

So hears to a new album soon....

He's absolutely entitled to his thoughts and as I pointed out those thoughts haven't been supportive of the bands current form so why would he have been supportive of FS and Robin's collaboration on the classic "Business As Usual?" Sorry I guess I just don't understand where I was critical of the jman. His comments are completely consistent and I wouldn't expect anything less.

Since you questioned my manhood, thanks for getting out of the high chair and finally admitting that Robin brings something to the band. The band is better in its current form plain and simple. Wait cue the Quiet Riot b.s. Are you still using that old routine? Crap is as old as Henny Youngman.

As far as "Business As Usual" it is classic aor. No doubt about. Great guitar and hooks galore. I don't put "Beyond The Storm" in the same category. To me it's a very personal album for JP and I appreciate that.

and its is funny...you would say high chair to me...LMAO...

You are the most imature, illogical, passive aggressive jackass most of us have ever seen. You are the joke of the board and your comments are always completely predictable and at best silly. So my QR joke is getting old eh? Well at LEAST ITS A JOKE. You say things that are just a off base and you are actually serious.

You are the absolute JOKE of this MESSAGE board and EVERYBODY thinks so.

Noone can post anything on here, without you taking it as some direct tirade at your imaginary butt budy FS and so therefore, because of YOU, everything here turns into a flame war. Hell, I would bet 1 million $$ that you would annoy the living hell out of FS. Who wants their ass kiss from a BLIND fanatic. If i'm not right, find one person to tell me i'm wrong.

Your post would actually matter if I gave a damn about what you and others think of me. I will take it as compliment. There's nothing silly about trying to create a some balance on the message board even if it means as you say being a "jackass." I will not sit idly by and let an FS bash-fest go on. Honestly it has been rediculous.

well that's one thing we can all agree on....Ridiculous (even rediculous works).

Nobody was bashing anyone on this post. Someone pointed out that they didn't like Businsess as Usual. So f-ing what. They can like what they want or don't want. And yet, YOU have to run in here to the 'rescue' of your good budy FS...to create Balance as you say...give me a break....

I tried to have a converstaion with Joe about the concert he saw, with nothing at all mentioned about FS and yet you have to ...again...stick your nose in it.

Gawd, can't you just shut up sometimes. Everything said on here does not require some passive aggressive smart ass comment from you. I know you think you are the self appointed defender of the truth, but just shut the hell up and listen sometime. You might just learn something.

Good god here we go with the fucking balance again. It must be real tough to have that responsibility from Andrew to "maintain" balance. Get over yourself, you egotistical fucking prima donna. Balance.....yeah from the most unbalanced person on here....gimme a break.

As for the crickets chirping etc. comment in the other thread...I'll answer you and Vana in 1 fell swoop.....It doesn't matter how many.....he's written more than we all have combined.....we've written ZERO.....so he beat us all at age 19 with "Vehicle". Sorry it took me so long to answer your magesty but some of us have more to do the sit and read boards and decide who we are going to insult today.

Joe Vana....don't think I didn't forget about you and your cute little swipe. Not cool Joe. You were Jim's friend for years and now you take little swipes at him in your post...not cool at all. You know very well how many hits and #1's he's written and co-written,so don't act like you're clueless. You couldn't have been close to him and not know the info. You also know how many people in all styles of music have ask him to write with them, they do this for a reason. Get over whatever your problem with him is and move on.....stop the cute little swipes in your post and all the other coincidences......and I'm sure you know what I'm talking about,I won't bring them up here out of respect. Oh and slander since I know you have a comeback for what I just said......Go to hell!!!!

Axe relax and take a ritalin or something. JP is a GREAT songwriter. I don't dispute that. I dig the guys music and own his stuff and I wish he were still in the band. Having said that you were the one who said he was above reproach because of all the number 1's he's written. You overstated the guys resume when you didn't need to. So I will ask you to apply the same standards to one MR. FRANKIE SULLIVAN. Who are you to question is guitar work? He plays better than you right? He's played on a number one song right? He's been asked to play on others records right? Using your own standards you have to right to question FS. Don't be a hypocrite. Axe are you a relative of JP? You gotta be. Peterik doesn't need your help his talent stands on his own

I don't have to defend FS talents. He's a great guitar player. Where I draw the line is when you guys call him a liar, a theif, etc. On that front I will not let your remarks stand on their own.

Whatever. I am sure you can go back through my posts and find supportive ones and negative ones. It's called being a realist! Despite the problems with the bands activity, I always give the music a straight listen. That is what it is about for me. I love Robin McAuley with MSG. It took me a while to get his solo CD and I did so on your recomendation. But it did nothing for me. That doesn't mean it is bad. I have not criticized it. I simply didn't "get anything from it".

As for the band's current efforts. I applauded them for getting airtime on DWTS AND the Fox show. Too bad they dropped out of the Fox show. I did question being involved with a show that might have political affiliations but that was based dolely on the direction of the thread as I knew nothing about the show. But I have been about as critical with Survivor as you are right now with Frankie not updating the fans about the Fox show. But to be honest, given your cheerleading stance on this board, your "criticizms" come off as a tactic to give you somehting to refer back to when you want to "prove" how you are critical of the band.

As for any other 'bias' you may read into my posting, that 'bias' stems from my reactions to YOUR posting here. There are times when I can't even read this board because of your schlock. And that has affected my posting style and habits here. I have always maitained that I am merely a casual Survivor fan. I enjoy the music but know little of the band. I thought I was a Jimi-era fan most because that is when I truly connected with Survivor. As I have gone back through some of their catalog I realize that I am, in fact, much more favorable to Dave. As for Robin, he has not proved anything to me yet. Basically, I have NO opinion on Robin in Survivor yet. When the band releases new music I will listen to it openly and judge based on what I hear and nothing else.

Slander, YOU are what is wrong with this board. Joe makes a post about enjoying the concert. Several of us try to talk about it in a postive manner of conversation and once again YOU ruin it. You want to fix the board. Do us all a favor and JUST GO AWAY!

In all fairness, I firmly believe everyone is welcome here. I don't think anyone should have to go away. But I wonder how many more people might post if there weren't these constant arguments between Slander and (just about) everyone else. I would not be surprised if Slander's quest for balance has scared away a few fans...
