A couple of things...

Postby Andrew » Sun Jul 13, 2008 8:52 am

Hopefully a "balanced" post here

A lot of speculation over the sound of the next studio album from Survivor. Personally I don't see a new album happening anytime soon, but I hope to be proven wrong.

We all know Frankie produced and co-wrote the Robin McAuley solo album - for recap, here is my review. Solid, but a log way from being classic:

http://www.melodicrock.com/reviews/frmcauley.p3

And on anothr subject....the upcoming JJ /JP album is shaping up to be a stunner. The material and performances I have been fortunate enough to hear have impressed the absolute shit out of me and this is coming from someone who is being very hard on the guys to do their best, as I know everyone is anticipating this release and when that happens, qulity needs to be delivered.

As late as last week JP completed writing 2 new songs for the album which will probably be 2 of the highlights!!

There is incredible ballads and some great rockers...stay tuned...

Awesome Andrew...

Thanks for the much 'balanced' post....I surely can't wait for the new JJ/JP album. Even before finding out that Dave will be on the album, I was quite excited by this news.

Thanks for the insight and I do hope that this post can stay constructive and of course 'balanced'.

I'm not yet sure Dave will be part of the album. I know Mickey Thomas has laid down some backing vocals plus his one line lead vocal for When Rock Was King.

Thanks Andrew. I'm a JPaholic and I'm really looking forward to this effort. I feel for Robin, he's in a tough situation following not one outstanding vocalist, but two. But that being said, I think he's a lacking replacement and I wouldn't have super high hopes for a Robin-fronted Survivor record. Frankie probably knows that deep down too. But if it comes out, I'll definitely listen with an open mind. Any idea on an approximate release date for JP/JJ record?

Far from it Eye. He's entitled to it. And now one has been more critical than I of the lack of info out of the Survivor camp or the fact that we haven't had any new material from Robin and FS. The time has come. No question about it.

Andrew...thanks so much for bringing up "Business As Usual" once again. There are some great tracks on the album. I like how you called some a mix of Survivor meets MSG. I hope people give Robin a chance. I guarantee you he WILL BRING IT!

I think Robin can stand toe to toe with both guys...And as far as being a showman live in concert....Robin is second to none. He will bring energy to any new Survivor release. Now having said that I know it will be hard for some to put Robin's voice to Survivor music. I disagree about the mind reading of Frankie here. FS picked Robin no doubt for a variety of reasons. Robin can more than hold his own. He had great success with MSG. More than Jamo had with Cobra. That by the way is no slam on JJ.

I read your review of McAuley's latest CD, I like your reference to the MSG CD with Never Ending Nightmare. That was a great CD. I still play that one often.

Give me a break I...It is clearly I who have never been entitled to opinion with being called a variety of names etc. That's okay with me though.

No I have not heard the CD. The only thing I know from McAuley are the MSG days. Good band.

Great band. I had read where Survivor was going to do some MSG songs in concert. Does anyone know if they have done that?

If they're smart they won't given the utter infrequency of their shows and the short setlists.

If they're so hellbent on establishing the new lineup and having McMetalVoice stand on his own, why confuse the issue?

I guess it's the same as having to endure the Baywatch theme mixed in with Survivor songs at a JJ show. I for one don't care. It may draw fans in other than true Survivor fans.

It's NOT the same as Jamison and Peterik covering Survivor and btw this is yet ANOTHER flop by you.
You can't take both sides.
You either have to have McRobin sing Survivor new and old to establish that grassroots foothold of support of him as the survivor singer or just cowtow to try and draw the .0034 of a potential fan for each show who MIGHT show up on the offchance of hearing some old MSG song.

Red just because you KNOW NOTHING of MSG doesn't mean squat. MSG was a far more popular than Cobra!

That's like saying Shotgun Messiah was far more popular than Black 'N Blue.

7 I respect you a great deal. On this one though I think you are off a bit. MSG had a solid following with or without Robin. Cobra never reached those levels of popularity.

And who in hell talked about Cobra?
You, as usual, made it a "but Jimi didn't/couldn't" issue.

This little exchange was over the asininity of playing MSG songs in a 10-song Survivor concert, NOTHING to do w/ Jamison, Bickler, Peterik or Cobra.

It was a solid album with the strength of songwriting the main let down. Sound wise it was pretty cool.

I love the sweet sound of peace and quite when Slander actually gets called out for his trouble making methods...

Enjoy guys, he'll be back soon enough.

On the MSG point though, funny thing is. I listened to a lot of stuff growing up and I don't ever recall even having heard of MSG. Slander, before you start, that's not a bash on the band. I just don't remember hearing of them ever. Did most of you on here listen to them?

Thank god for Andrew!

I did read that the JJ/JP project was originally going to be a country album... wow, that woulda sucked!

Seems like they're definitely going for the 'continuation of Survivor' thing, which can only be positive. It's what the fans want, hell it's what they expect given the track history of the two guys involved.

I just hope they manage to incorporate some of the grit and toughness that Frankie brought to the sound. I love Pride of Lions, but sometimes I miss the raw edge that Survivor had on some songs. Even on When Seconds Count (possibly the fluffiest album thanks to the synths) there were some harder cuts like Backstreet Love Affair, Can't Let You Go (not my fave track in the world), and Keep It Right Here still had that 'tough' vibe to it. Hell, if you can hear past the synths, Oceans has a certain drive and swagger as well.

Then again, I don't want them to lose the sense of melody like they did on some of the tracks on Too Hot to Sleep. 'Tell Me I'm the One' and 'Can't Give It Up' don't do a lot for me, 'Rhythm of the City' isn't their best work, 'She's a Star' has its moments... of course, the title track is a great example of a song combining a hard edge with a sense of melody and 'Desperate Dreams' has the moodyness that I love about Survivor.

So yeah, here's hoping for a good range of tracks that carry the Survivor feel. A mixture of all 3 JJ Survivor albums would be cool.

Would be curious to hear Jamo do 'Faithful Heart' - pity Jim lost the demo for that one!

- Danny.
