Tito's World Stage review

Postby Tito » Tue Jan 20, 2009 2:33 am

This past Saturday night, I went to see the 9th annual Jim Peterik and World Stage show. I have caught every one of them and the precursor show to all of this at a charity show at Penny Road Pub back in the last 90's. The show on Saturday night, did not disappoint and was one of the better ones in my opinion. A lot of old faces and a new one, which impressed. There wasn't as much local talent presented as in prior years and Toby Hitchcock who was advertised wasn't there. The only local talent excluding the band was the lovely Lisa McClowery - which was more than enough for me (if you know what I mean - WOW!). So, this show was more of popular hits than usual I would say.

Jim Peterik's son, Colin's band, Lobster Newberg opened up with a brief set. They played new songs of their upcoming album. No Set Your Sails though. Now for the main show. The first question that comes to one's mind when seeing a Peterik show is what outrageous outfit will he be wearing this time....Oh my god! What the fuck is on his head. Nice hair.    They open up with Night of World Stage.

The first guest is Jimi Jamison. Folks, this dude is back. His voice was on and powerful. Grant it, not exactly where it was 20+ years ago but damn close and that ain't no bullshit either. They played High On You, Can't Hold Back, Search is Over, and a new song of Crossroad Moment - Friends We Never Met (?). It sounded pretty good. My only disappointment was they didn't have any for sale at the merchandise table. I was looking forward to picking one up. They played the CD over the speaker during the intermission and at the conclusion of the show. I only heard bits and pieces and it didn't sound bad.

After that, the lovely Lisa McClowery came in front from her background vocal position. They played Unconditional Surrender (along with Nick Colliene). This is a great jazz song. They then played a new song from her upcoming CD. Another stellar vocal performance. If she was on the radio, she would easily have one of the best voices on it.

Next was, making his World Stage debut, David Pack of Ambrosia. This guy sounds EXACTLY like he did 30 years ago. It was like listening to the radio. I see why Perry is singing background on Pack's CD and Pack isn't singing background on Perry's shit. That is the correct order as Pack proved he is by far the better vocalist today. They played That's How Much I Feel, Only Woman, and Biggest Part of Me. Before BPOM, Pack told a funny story about him playing the song before Clinton's first inagural.

I may be getting mixed up but I believe Nick Colliene was next (if not he came after Ides). He stayed within his time this year. He played a very good instrumental jazz song first. It was the same one as last year and it's actually pretty good. I could listen to it. The second number had vocals and wasn't bad either. I thought it was going to drag but it didn't. So, I had no problem with Colliene this year. He wears excellent clothes too. I wish I could pull that off. Also, he had some funny one liners.

Closing out the first set was Kelly Keagy. They played Goodbye (a WS first), Sister Christian, and Don't Tell Me You Love Me (which brought down the house as usual). It was almost a mini-Night Ranger as Joel Hoekstra and Christian Cullen are in the WS band.

The second set began with Ides Of March. They played Come Dancin' and their staple hit Vehicle. Not bad for a band 45 years old.

Next was Don Barnes. They played Caught Up In You, Hold on Loosely, Fantasy Girl, and Rockin Into The Night - all Peterik co-written songs. Before RITN, Keagy came back out and did a double drum solo intro with Ed Breckenfield, the WS drummer. Barnes sounded pretty good. Also, before one of the songs Barnes was finally the one to make fun of Peterik's hair. The crowd laughed along at this ribbing.

The final guest was Rik Emmett. This set got me stoked for the Triumph reunion because he sounds the best in years. They played Fight The Good Fight, Lay It on The Line, and Magic Power. The only unfortunate thing was we didn't get a guitar solo from Emmett this year. But he ripped it during the songs. This guy is good - which is the understatement of the year so far.

Everyone came back on stage for the encore, Eye Of The Tiger. Jamison sang lead vocals. It was the extended jam version with Peterik running through the crowd playing his guitar.

Bottom line, this was well worth the money and in some respects this may have been the best one yet because of the high percentage of stars and hit songs. Even though most of the artists I have seen more than once, it was still a very good time. I'm not sure why they don't advertise this a little more and play a bigger venue. Because this show although a sellout, would sell a larger venue. All I can say is I can't wait til next year for World Stage X.

P.S. After the show, we were able to have a quick word with Peterik and Saint John told him Andrew said hi. Peterik said Andrew is great and like his dad.

Great review Tito! I was also there. It was my first WS show, long overdue. Wish that I also could have made the last minute show in Milwaukee the next day... the show was that good! I didn't realize that Peterik would be on stage playing guitar the whole show. It was over 3 hours long with only one intermission. What stamina! Mike Aquino and Joel Hoekstra were also on the stage just about the whole show. It was cool to hear 5 guitars most of the time. Each took center stage for solos. Peterik didn't use his Minarik Inferno mirrored guitar for his solo this time, and the Gibson that he used wasn't quite the same sound, but he still came out into the middle of the audience to solo during Eye on the Tiger encore.

As Tito says, the vocals throughout were simply amazing, considering the strain on these high powered tenor voices. JJ, David Pack and Kelly Keagy's vocals were just as good as when the albums were originally released. Kelly went wild running and jumping across the stage, and the audience gave him a huge standing ovation. No disappointments at all. We had a few Triumph fans next to us, and Rick Ehmett didn't disappoint. We actually enjoyed Nick's jazz guitar too, especially the end with delicate fingerwork on the last song, and his red pimping suit was outrageous. The sound at the entire event was pristine from where we sat on the main floor center back, engineered to perfection by Larry Millas. Peterik joked at one point that his wife Karen thought that his hair looked like a skunk. It wasn't your typical highlight job with black and white swirls galore, but if you can dress in wild colors, why not the hair too! It was very rock star! Peterik's website said that Jimi Jamison would sing both several old and new songs, but he only sang the one from Crossroads, FWNM, and it was just as good as the CD. Was hoping that he'd do more than one new song, yet 4 songs was one more than all of the other performers. On the tickets, it was well advertised that no cameras were allowed, but there were many flashes going off when Jimi Jamison hit the stage. I also saw a few videos going, but haven't seen any hit youtube yet. I had my camera just in case I got to meet Jimi for the first time after the show, but I snapped just a few non-flash photos of JJ and JP on stage. Hope you enjoy!

After the show, there was a long lineup of fans at the merchandise table. You only had maybe 15-30 seconds to talk to each one. Some gals in line next to me came just to see Toby. I asked JP if Toby would be at the show next day at Potawanami Casino in Milkwaukee, and he sighed and said "no Toby", but I didn't ask why. I said that I was at the last Milwaukee show and would try to go the next day. JP replied that he hopes somebody actually buys tickets. It was sad to see great seats available just hours before the show. Jimi didn't show up at the table right away, but eventually JJ appeared at the very end of the line. I'd only seen him previously at huge arena shows, and at a local video taping, so I was excited to finally meet him. Very sweet guy! He was kind enough to pose for a photo too! :)

We talked to one of the venue people after the show, and he said that they were currently making arrangements for the next annual show at about the same time of year (it was below 0 degrees that day with light snow flurries... but well worth the hour long drive). Tito said above that this is an annual show... so is there only one WS show per year, or just one show at this venue?

Great review Tito! Wish I could have been there...

I can't wait to see Jimi out on the road this year! I hope I can make it to a show. Of course, props to Jim Peterik for putting together yet another incredible show that I regret not being at!

Thanks for both reviews.

A quick question, something Tito brought up in his post.

On his myspace page, Jimi is singing "Come Dancin". Has he ever released his version, which btw is incredible? If so can one of you enlighten me as to where I can find it?

Thanks.
When in doubt, DUCK!

Tito touched on it briefly, but I'd like to add that Jim Peterik had some very nice things to say about Andrew. He also alluded to the fact that if Andrew decides to do another show..."I'm there. Anything he needs, man. I'll help in any way I can. You know, I think Andrew is my dad. He's like my dad, you know?" 8) Jim is a great guy and if Andrew does another show I'm sure Jim could help him put together a wonderful lineup. Man, I hope this happens. :)

In relation to Come Dancin' Jimi has never released it.I believe it has been recorded for a forthcoming country project that he is doing with JP.There was a country version of the POL track Sound Of Home on his myspace last summer too.

The first question JP gave me when I told him about my blog called "Melodic Rock Concerts" was if I knew Andrew - he definitely appreciates the Wombat...

Is POL finished? I hope not. Toby is a great talent.
