Songs that sound like Survivor... but aren't?

Postby Idiosyncrasy » Fri Mar 13, 2009 5:16 am

Hi,

Okay, let's get some traffic going on this board! lol!

I wondered if people could name some songs (or bands) that sound like Survivor - and let's leave out the REALLY obvious ones like Pride of Lions...

Here's a few to get the ball rolling...

Lec Zorn Project - crosses the line into plagiarism in places, but all good stuff!
Final Frontier - Somebody's Watching You (aka High On You part 2!)
Artica - As It Should Be (will have to listen to this one again, but that's the comparison that's always made!)
Terry Brock - Back to Eden (the song!) - Well okay, it's a Peterik co-write - but it's VERY Survivory!
Atlantic
Hit the Ground Runnin' - Back Again (originally meant for Rocky 5)
Fortune / Harlan Cage - Moody, gritty AOR with thumping rhythm section and pomp keyboards! Love this band!
Voices of Rock - Nightingale (Terry Brock)
Journey - What It Takes to Win
Brother Firetribe - Play It From the Heart
Danger Danger - Under the Gun
Mecca - Wishing Well (possibly the most Survivoresque song on the album? - okay, maybe this one IS obvious... lol)
Balance - In For the Count
Intruder - Heart on the Run (aka Jackie Don't Go...)
T'Bell - Refugee

... and over to you guys!...

I disagree with Wishing Well....and not just because I co-wrote it.....I really feel not one of the tunes on Mecca (besides Velocitized) fit the Survivor Template....

I always thought "Touch Me Tonight" by Shooting Star had a Survivor-like quality to it.

Besides "What It Takes To Win," Journey's "Where Did I Lose Your Love" also has a strong Survivor feel to it. And Journey's "I Got A Reason" has musical similarities to Survivor's "Didn't Know It Was Love."

I guess I hear elements of Survivor in the verses rather than the chorus there - the 'tough', 'moody' sound combined with the stabbing keys. I gave the album a spin yesterday actually and still adore it! Really hard to pick a favourite track, but I love "Can't Stop Love" and "Wishing Well".

Just out of interest, were there any other old Peterik demos considered for the album (along with You Still Shock Me and Blinded by Emotion)?

Thanks!

- Danny.

There were a few yes.....but, I did not want an album of retreads or demos that were tossed around for years and nobody picked it up....I see alot of those tunes I passed on showing up on other guys albums, I am glad I passed on those.....All I know is JP wanted to pick the other tunes (the ones Fergie was singing),....But, I had 6 tunes I had written with JP and wanted only things that would compliment those....we only had a day or so of writing with Fergie and Wishing Well came from that day.....

Velocitized was a no brainer for me, Frankie's Guitar parts are what did it......BUT, we had one of the best drummer on the planet (Shannon Forrest) the best bassist and my mentor(David Hungate) and amazing keyboardist (Jimmy Nichols) but we could not match the fire and intensity of the original demo.....

Talk about chasing a demo....

I really can't compare the above mentioned tunes sound like Survivor or not, but Im a big fan of a full album with great tunes. The two albums that I could actually listen that to in full, and have a Survivorish vibe (vibe is the key Survivor does that to me anyway), would be Sonic Temple by The Cult and Dangerous Age by Bad Company. Love both those albums to death, as much as Survivor stuff.

Journey - What It Takes to Win

I agree...what it takes to win could be easily a survivor song

Journey's "Signs of Life" from Arrival has almost the exact same riff in the middle of the chorus as "High on You"

I also thought a couple of The Storm songs had a Survivor feel and similar vocal styling as Jamison but I don't recall the specific songs without the CD in front of me.

Also, I agree with Joe Vana that Mecca's sound stands on its own, even with Peterik's co-writing. That's gotta be one of my favorite albums! MUST HAVE MORE MECCA...

Hey Guys,

Listen to Fortune's Thrill Of It All. They had a Survivor sound to me. Mid 80's rock group from LA.

You got it!! A few on this board have heard some of the new material.....kind of as a focus group....and so far the reaction is VERY positive...I have been VERY busy mixing and working on finishing touches....I am thrilled with the results!!!

As far as this specific thread I will say this...JP and FS have a very unique writing style...and when they write together there is maybe 5 or 6 other partnerships in music that might even come close.....but as far as POP music goes they are the best writing team for my money.......There are of course other bands that have written material that is similar to them...but they have their own flair....this is a fun thread by the way.....

Excellent Joe! Glad Dec is on schedule then. Can't wait. :D

Absolutely spot on about JP/FS writing style. Yes, it's pop but having it's own flair. The closest I could give to their level would be Schon/Cain/Perry (and that takes 3 of them). While Journey's "pop" stuff is great, it's only Survivor's that makes me keep coming back. Haven't listened to a Journey tune in months. While Survivor is just about everyday.

With regards to tunes that sound like Survivor, to me would be "Power" by Kansas. Infact going to listen to it right now, ha ha!

"Bob Catley "end of the world"...don't know why it makes me feel like it's a Survivor song...perhaps the energy that it delivers...
