Did Survivor drop the ball back in 07?

Postby Ehwmatt » Tue Sep 29, 2009 1:01 pm

Namely, when Rocky Balboa was being released. Bring Peterik back in the fold, write a new movie theme, rehash Eye for the film as well, either release a new album or at least a teaser CD with a few new songs on the strength/promotion of Rocky and who knows what could have happened... perhaps even a lucrative WalMart exclusive?

If REO could get a WalMart exclusive back then, no reason a rejuvenated and reunited Survivor couldn't have.

Yes and no!

Jim Peterik and Kelly Keagy wrote "I'm Alive" as a prospective song for the movie and, I believe, both "Reach" and "Fire Makes Steel" were submitted (Frankie made a leading comment in a band note). However, Stallone wanted a back-to-basics Bill Conti-only soundtrack to echo the original film.

I found it interesting to read that Hit the Ground Runnin's song 'Back Again' was going to be on the Rocky 5 soundtrack at one point (before Stallone decided that horrible rap soundtrack would be more appropriate!)

Interesting, I didn't know any of that. Sounds like it was beyond their control then.

 I don't think Survivor dropped the ball. I think Jimi should have continued on a solo career after the awesome Empires cd . Jimi's vocals were awesome and he had a great band behind him .

Survivor's sound was the inspiration in the urgency of writing and that special sound created by all 5 guys . Jim Peterik , Jimi jamison & Frankie Sullivan are Survivor to me. Without all of them together the sound just isn't there.

Rocky Balboa would have been a great shot to get ito the big time again but Stallone chose not to have a new kick ass soundtrack.

The tunes on Reach just didn't have that magic or fire .

Considering he basically sacked half the band he had before that cd, he probably would have been better off keeping the original guys around.

Yes, but I think the Bickler/Peterik/Sullivan lineup sounded just as good. Different, but just as good. At times (ie Runway Lights), I'd say the Bickler-era might have had better harmonies.

I don't know how much--if any--benefit this would have gotten Survivor. They have a VERY small following.

There was some magic on those songs, but I'm under the opinion that a lot of the unreleased songs were actually better than some of the stuff that made the cd.

Yeah, I don't think this was their ball to drop...the soundtrack of that movie, along with the movie stripped away all the 80's excess etc. and back down to that late '70's feel and therefore the Bill Conti style score was a much better fit...A Survivor tune would not really have fit that movie...

And I do agree in Rocky V that rap deal was horrid!

Exactly, at first I accused them of not being proactive enough, but there was (as w/ 1 and II) nothing but Conti's score...It could have been EOTT all over again and it wouldn't have been used in the movie in hindsight.
Still unanswered is what the "new place found for Fire Makes Steel that" was "going to blow" our "minds."
