I found it very difficult to get my hands on this album, and it didn't disappoint.Stand out tracks,"She's a star & Tell me I'm the one".

re: best survivor album

Postby toto4evr » Mon Sep 22, 2003 4:57 pm

hey finally a survivor /related board!! thank you andrew!!!

fav cd is 1981's premonition ...luv every song feel start to finish its there best work and a close second is there last "released" studio effort 1988's
forgotten gem ' too hot to sleep'....all the cuts are good to great with many songs that back then and even a couple today could make a big dent on the charts ( though more than likely the a/c charts today)....

stand out cuts on too hot... the 3 singles "didn't know it was love" ...maybe there best song ever...rockin', great hooks n chorus ..jamo really shines!!

also the haunting n beautiful love outcry ' across the miles' (the only ballad on the 10 song cd) a classic true n true....the best 3 jamison, peterik and sullivan EVER sounded as a group.

and I really liked the song I heard most on the radio from this release ( and really the only one that got any real play, at least in chicago) "desperate dreams"...starts off mid-tempo pop/balladish, ur not quite sure where its going but its smooth, and also a bit haunting and sad as well ..great fucking song! also dig "she's a star" , hell all of them!!!

but my alltime fav goes to premonition, with cuts like "summer nights", " poor mans' son", " hearts a lonely hunter (this line-up's best vocal) , and the the hardest and best track , "love is on my side".....just absolute bickler at his best!!!

3rd fav is "caught ..."

4th is the s/t
5th is when seconds count (which even though has wayy to much synths and poppyness is a great album...)
with stand out tracks including the hits , "is this love", " man against the world", and "oceans", title track provides all you need to hear for you to konw this band can do it all..and do it well!

as far as slick/pop rock and rootsy rock (the bickler years) this band is king for this rock fan!! problem is they had the antonio alfonseca (chicago cubs horrible relief pitcher) of record labels...the soprano's of the record world the scotti bros.

funny how the only 2 cd's they really pushed did over 1 million each!!!

and 1986's "when seconds count" did about 600 k I believe and had 2 hit singles on them, with no help from rock radio, ( it was the 2 video's showing off the "metal hell " sexy look of jamison and the band that help do it.) awfully surprising fact , that 1985's #2 hit the smash theme from rocky 4 "burning heart" was left off of the album !!!

would've helped sell another million at least!! dumb move..but then again they have the scotti bros. to thank for that!!!

Fave albums

Postby madscot » Sun Oct 19, 2003 8:25 pm

In order from 1 to 7

1. Vital signs
2. Too hot to sleep
3. When seconds count
4. Caught in the game
5. Eye of the tiger
6. Premonition
7. Survivor

As you can see I thought that with Bickler as lead singer each album was better than the previous but when Jimi Jamison came in every album was phenomenal and the three of them are separated by a whisker.

My take on the first three are

Vital signs - No fillers, great songs, production and singing

Too hot to sleep - Fantastic but not enough ballads

When seconds count - Not enough guitar in the mix, but what guitar there is is outstanding

I'd have to agree with this.....Jamison reigned supreme....Vital signs was just awesome & refreshing after the bands previous efforts.

Too hot to Sleep is cool & like yourself feel there aren't enough Guitars on 'seconds...but the tracks are still good...although the middle of the three it sounds the most dated due to the large involment of 80's synth.

Love Jamisons voice though!.....Stunning!

Cheers DC2003 :D

hi guys!

Postby toto4evr » Thu Oct 23, 2003 4:51 am

yeah, I hear what ur saying about jamo he was/is a great singer and frontman...a decent writer though i felt his "when love comes down" was weak overall both vocally, and songwise...'VITAL SIGNS', is my LEAST favorite due to the lack of guitars..many say that 'WHEN SECONDS COUNT' lacked guitar or rock balls and it did but had wayyy more rock than v.s. did....
Its not an opinion its a fact that w.s.c. rocks more, wether u like it better or not is a matter of opinion and i respect everyones. the titile track,is this love', rebel son' , oceans' all had tons of guitars around peteriks synths n keys those are just a few of the tunes that exude frankie's melodic axe on that release! its a far superior release than v.s. in that regard!

Now, don't get me wrong kids I still like "VITAL SIGNS" in parts esp. "first night", "everlasting" (a far superior ballad than the search), "broken promises" (fav. cut on v.s.) and "I see you in everyone" esp franks awesome solo!! wow!! esp live man , he cooks!!

for me its the first 4 with dave that do it for me esp. 1981's 'PREMONITION' release...just rockin' brilliance..there best for me ...also the favorite of marc d. the drummer (he told me as much in 1997 after a show) that and 'TOO HOT..." which is that line-up's most consistent and rocking release to date!! just awesome..many fans werent hooked due to lack of airplay and the lack of pop/soul n sappy ballads that plagued the previous 2 jamo releases...

if you take 3 survivor albums on a desert to listen too IMO..THEY ARE 3. 'SURVIVOR',
1. PREMONITION,
2. TOO HOT TO SLEEP followed VERY closely by
4. CAUGHT IN THE GAME! it was far better than the very average (but still good ) EYE OF THE TIGER (3rd release in 1982) BUT, lacked the rawness, blusey soul and consistent harder rockn sound of the first 3 releases and was a bit synthy n poppy in the middle for me..
but the title track, "jackie dont go", "Ive never stopped (loving you)", "sanna anna winds" and the rocker "slander" are all slammin tunes and are some of my all time fav's from the guys.

don't get me wrong I do like many tracks by survivor on the other 3 cd's but they are not start to finish as consistenly pleasing to my rocking ears! lol..

see you all "across the miles" at the shows this winter here in the states!

Too Hot To Sleep just edges it from Premonition. i also love the Eye of the Tiger album as well. i wonder where you would all place Pride of Lions compared with the Survivor back catalogue!!! And I'm glad someone mentioned Across The Miles off Too Hot To Sleep, its probably my fave Survivor track and possibly the best ballad of all time.

1.Vital Signs
2.When Seconds Count
3.Too Hot To Sleep
4.Caught In The Game
5.Eye Of The Tiger
6.Premonition
7.Survivor

My favourite song of all-time: I See You In Everyone. Unbelievable that they never released this song as a single.

Well I guess this is one of those questions. So difficult to make a choice but I will say "caught in the game". I bought it on LP format and re bought it just incase it gets ruined. I absolutely love the songs "jackie dont go" and "never stopped loving you" Truly an amazing album.

My second best is "when seconds count"

1) Too Hot to Sleep, by far the best
2) Vital Signs a good runner up
3) When Seconds count, good, but in places fell like they are waling thru it.
the rest are ok, each have some good songs.

Jami's solo are ok, nothing realy shine like the 3 Survivor above.-ERIC

Interesting that no one is voting "Eye of the tiger" Its maybe because everyone has heard the song "eye..." million times and the fact is that no matter how excellent any song is if you hear it too many times you get tired. But otherwise I would say "eye..." is my favorite and it has maybe something to do with nostalgia because it was with that album that I became aware of this great group

I'm going with Tiger on this one. Ultimate Survivor's liner notes quoted Sullivan as saying he thought the rest of the album (title track aside) was so strong it coulda been called The One That Really Matters and it woulda been a great record still. Happen to agree with him. Great as Tiger Is (quintisential Survivor riff), there are at least 4 songs on the album that are as good.
Silver Girl was a brilliant balld, too. Not cheesy....

Too Hot To Sleep (Thanks, Abitaman) runs a close 2.

My second favourite is "Premonition". I bought it a lot later than "eye..." from second hand shop and I was pleasantly surprised as it was almost as good as Tiger. By the way, it would be nice to see Peterik & Survivor reunion someday as he was important part of Survivor songwriting department.

Never heard Prem. yet. Is that where Somewhere In AMerica is from? It's on Ultimate and what a tune that is. Bickler is badass on that thing.

Nope, that one is debut. I think biggest hit from "Premonition" was "Chevy Nights"
