End of the silence: SURVIVOR cover artwork

Postby def » Wed Apr 18, 2012 5:12 pm

I think that the cover artwork of all the releases has never been perfect, but there have been weaker and better attempts. So, that would be my ranking, starting with the worst:

1. REACH: The only good thing on this one is the return of the classic logo. Besides that this landscape is just ridiculous. A lot of covers of Frontiers records have bad or uninspired artwork, but the REACH artwork is really bad.

2. CAUGHT IN THE GAME: One of their best - maybe their best - album effort, but a very poor artwork. The logo change is pure shit and the arrangement of the screen frame and the way to small globus does not work out.

3. VITAL SIGNS: An okay artwork, it reflects the title, but is still a little boring.

4. PREMONITION: Very old school, but saying that one should not forget, that is an old album. Better artwork than the one on John Fogerty' 'Premonition'.

5. WHEN SECONDS COUNT: Good effort, nice allusion to a clock...

6. SAME: Great classic cover artwork - although it does not make any sense at all - and do I need to say more, when Kim Basinger smiles...

7. EYE OF THE TIGER: Love it, a trademark cover to remember. Good idea to put the silhouette of the backside band photo into the eye of the tiger.

8. TOO HOT TO SLEEP: A typical Hugh Syme. Nice work with the colours and even the pimped up logo fit in that era. He changed WHITESNAKES logo on '1987' as well and did a good job on Def Leppards 'Retroactive'. A harmonic cover...

'How Do You Feel' runs out of competition. picture was too small to judge and it does not seem to become a cover artwork.

I never understood not using that classic logo on CITG or ToHot...I love that classic Logo!

Survivor - Not bad artwork....one of those deals where, 'let's have a theme'....okay...bombers! Has nothing to do with album, but what the hell!

Premonition - It's okay....Love the use of the logo...

EYE - CLASSIC...love the band in the 'eye'

CITG - I like it actually....Would have rather seen the classic logo, but it's a good cover

Vital - I actually like this one...good 80's feel...

WSC - Great Cover...

Too Hot - Okay, but give me my LOGO!

Reach - Great to see the logo back, but kind of cheesy...much like most of the album!

Maybe it's just me, but I really "feel" the cover artwork for Reach. It suits perfectly the record. Not one to remember, but it definetely applies to the songs in there

Agree, CITG cover is bad. But better than putting a chess board with alive characters ( I bet someone thought about that back then)

Check out Night Ranger's Man In Motion album cover. It's a complete rip off of thts.

Survivor: Hard to comment much about this cover, it's just sort of bland. I have the Kim Basinger version, but isn't there another version out there that's even more bland?

Premonition: Cheesy band photo, with them all posing with their hands over the eyes.

Eye Of The Tiger: Eh, it's okay, I guess. I don't like it as much as some of you do, though. The painting seems a bit cheap.

Caught In The Game: A bit amateurish/sloppy.

Vital Signs: Probably my favorite of them all. Simple, but effective and eye-catching.

When Seconds Count: Or maybe this one is my favorite? Hmm...

Too Hot To Sleep: A bit bland, I guess. I don't mind the new logo, though. I prefer the classic logo, but it really felt like the band was going for a harder sound on this album than they did on their previous two albums, so maybe they felt it would be good to represent that with a new look?

Reach: Really amateurish. Oddly enough, I kind of like it anyway.

I have always thought that too. Looking back now kind of says the sun is setting on both the bands.

I found a sealed LP of Too Hot To Sleep a few weeks ago. Looks great at the bigger 12" record size. Has a drill hole in it because it's a promo though.

Favorite is probably Eye of the Tiger. Simple design and fits the title of the album perfectly.

Hm. interesting point. When I came home from work tonite I just picked the album and waited for some feelings...suddenly I felt rushed to listen to "Someone Elses Sleepless Night" and the formidable Bickler version of 'Fire Makes Steel'. Not to bad of a feeling though.

Mikele, it does not work with me, but that is just the same with the whole album. To me 'Reach' is the end of a steep descent from summits like 'CITG' or 'EOFTT'...

So you're saying the songs are as forgettable as the album cover?
