When I saw Jimi's fake Survivor cover band in 1995, there was actually a pretty massive crowd. Granted, it was at an amusement park, so people were already there for the rides anyway, but once JJ's Survivor started playing, the area in front of stage got really packed. I was there early, so I was right up front, but about half-way through the show, I turned around and was shocked to see that the crowd stretched all the way back down the midway of the amusement park.
Funny thing about that show-- before it started, somebody running the show came on stage and asked, "Do we have any Billy Joel fans here tonight?!" (this was followed by a ton of cheers.) "Well, we got a really special treat for you!" So for a moment I was thinking, "Whoa, wait a second, is Billy Joel opening for a fake Survivor cover band?! Jeez, how the mighty have fallen!"
Turns out, they were just giving away a pair of free tickets to a Billy Joel show, which, sadly, I did not win. (actually, the person who won them did not deserve to win them. They asked her to sing the opening line to ANY Billy Joel song, and she couldn't do it. Then they said, "Okay, sing ANY line from ANY Billy Joel song," and she still couldn't do it. Finally they told her, "Okay, just sing the first line of the happy birthday song." She did that, and got the tickets. Oh, the benefits of being an attractive 20-something year old girl.....)
