Perry's voice, the lost treasure?

Hey as I have written recently I'm on a total Journey obsession lately. Tuesday I went and got the 2001 DVD and I've been jamming and singing to their stuff before gigs for fun. Wed I put on Message of Love in the headphones, and I think for the first time I could really hear the deterioration of Steve's voice. It's pretty hoarse during the song and no coating of reverb can hide that. He's still hitting some great notes on that album like on When You Love A Woman. I think listening to that voice there would be no way for him to go on tour. It's a shame what happened to one of the greatest voices in rock.

While Perry may have lost the smootheness in his voice, and some of his range, he was still incredibly emotive. Perry could still make you feel the song. In fact, I would say his singing became MORE emotional after losing some of his range. And I think THAT is even better than breaking glasses with high notes.

I agree that touring would may have been difficult for him. I saw him 2 years before that and he was very enjoyable, but definately NOT singing the songs the way he used to.

I really love Steve's voice in the lower ranges. I hope he makes some solo music soon. edit: yikes, how do i shrink my picture? I would also love to hear some new solo work from Neal-he's a genius.

Neal recently released "I on U". Very 'nice' CD. Rocks a little more than his recent solo efforts but not as much as Neal is prone to do. Have you listened to Soul SirkUS?

Jrnyman, thanks for the info (and compliment, doll.x) I'll have to get Neal's newer c.d. I've heard some Soul Sirkus because my brother practically worships Neal. I'll have to listen to some more. I loved him with Jan Hammer. I was surprised that I loved his singing.

If you like Neal's singing and you like him with Jan Hammer, then you must like "In Self Defense" off of "Generations". Ya know, the remake of Self-Defense from Schon-Hammer's "Here To Stay".

I agree, his singing was still soulfull and enjoyable on TBF and LOSM. Now when you say it was different when you saw him, I'm betting he tuned down the songs. Also I wonder if he played with the melodies (what I call "chopping the melody" instead of hitting a high note, changing it to a lower note. I saw Tom Petty in 1990 and he was doing this all night, it was horrible. For example on the bridge of Refugee just before the solos, where it goes: right now see the real you don't have to be truuuuueeeee, or whatever, he sang it an octave lower.

You know, I was thinking about the title of this thread.

Isn't a lost treasure something fantastic, yet lost..?? And then you find that something, and it is still fantastic?

I really hope he can sing, but don't think so...
