Journey Single To Be Added To Radio

If you scroll to the bottom you will see "Rock Going For Adds" and that is where Journey is listed. I am guessing that is an announcement that Journey will be releasing the single for rock radio, but of course, does not mean it will get added to the playlists.

I was looking at the AC charts info and saw there is a HUGE increase in numbers for those songs. Now I see why Journey spent a lot of time trying the AC audience. Maybe by the time they release their ballad (hopefully after a couple of rockers) they will make a dent in AC...
Back in the good ole days, a band released 2 rock songs before releasing a ballad...no matter how well the rock did. Band used to want to establish themselves as a rock band first and foremost and then "surprise" everyone with a ballad. I think it is a format that Journey should return to. Even if airplay eludes Journey, they should not stop trying for it. And if only the ballad "hits", that is not a reason to abandon the rock.

Of course, when you look at the pop charts, the increase is astronomical. And I see no reason why Journey cannot send their rock to pop radio. Many rock bands have hit on pop stations. Nickleback, Papa Roach, 3 Doors Down, Green Day are all bands that fit another genre but hit on pop. Jounrey needs to be "Going For Adds" on the POP stations as well as the ROCK ones. In fact, I think they would have a better shot there. On the rock stations they are stacked up against the likes of Korn and Disturbed and Taproot and Seether...not exactly a big Journey audience.

I know some are not fans of Knowing That You Love Me, and I prefer Above The Clouds over it myself. But I think that KTYLM has the most potential as an AC single. If WYLAW got a grammy nod, it deserves one too (not that its likely to happen seeing all the crap that gets grammy nominations these days), as it is as good or better lyrically, musically, and vocally and the gospel influenced backing vocals are incredible.

Maybe a good guage would be what Billy Idol's Sream off Devil's Playground (Sanctuary release) did on radio. I heard it several times in Philly but am not sure how it impacted nationally. Anyone know? Never heard ANYTHING off Cyclorama on radio.....

I don't know about the airplay but if Billy Idol can get exposure on Leno, Conan, etc, why not Journey? Is it Sanctuary's work or Idol's image that got him booked on these things? He certainly can't play the venues Journey can play.

Journey's not going to appear on TV for Generations! :x They have already stated that they are ready for a break. And Neal wants to get back to Soul SirkUS. They are shooting themselves in the foot. Of ALL years, THIS is the year to give the full court push. 30th Anniversary, Tour that takes you back and into the future, new CD 'generating' quite a bit of buzz, a record label (albeit a small one), the Journey motorcycle (give it away on Leno for cryin' out loud!), and European dates next year. Get on TV!!

You're right, as much as I'm looking forward to more SS, this is bad timing for Journey, they should look at taking off in 07, if at all, definitely not now.
I wonder though, how quickly their plans would change if they had a song make any impact at all at radio.
Its not that I'm expecting them to appear on TV, just why not them if Billy Idol can...but I realize that they have to be interested and pushing to make it happen before it will.

Am I the only one who is NOT looking forward to SS and feels that Neal maybe moving in too many directions outside of the one that pays his bills?

It bad enough to hear that some of Generations was basically going to be a SA solo album...

Trouble is, it won't make an impact on radio unless they push it!

Yeah, they should be starting a new leg of the tour instead of finishing it as the single goes to radio.

Television is a hard medium to get into for arena rock acts. I think they stand a better chance of pushing via AC radio and building a new audience which then gets exposed to the other portion of Journey. And if the band members aren't aggressive enough to push, the label won't either.

Yeah - I definitely thought the same thing - too many directions. I enjoyed both, don't get me wrong, but thought Generations was better than SS.

I wouldn't be too sure of that because if you had seen how many of the younger generation (twenty somethings) were present at the Journey show last Sunday in Hollywood, FL, it was definitely apparent there IS a NEW ROCK audience for Journey!

Yep, and if SS takes off in any way, I doubt you will hear from Journey again. If Neal can tour with SS and 'pay his bills', why keep doing Journey? I think putting so much effort into SS is a waste of time, IMO...I have always thought so. I just don't see them getting off the ground.

However...it WILL be interesting to hear Augeri's solo album - to find out what Journey COULD have been doing.

Huh...that's kinda harsh...I saw SS and thought it was....ok....Virgil - who I respect very highly, actually let me down - he didn't seem like he wanted to groove with the band....of course his solo was alien like (i.e. f'n amazing).....

But anyway...back to Journey....and Neal Schon....I am absolutely stoked I'm getting to see them in October (great venue in Arizona, All Access "4" grade tickets)...if this is the last time I'll see them for a while...I'll be ok with that....I would really like to see Neal do the ultimate solo CD...you know, tracks that make his playing shine, varying vocalists, varying drummers too....and definitely harder edged...tired of this mindless near-ez listening stuff he's produced...I mean I respect the shit out of his playing, but to me, the all time great laid-back instrumental guitar CD was done by Michael Landau (L.A. session guy)....Neal's recent solo stuff...save a few great tracks (I really dig the tracks "I on U" and "Medicine Man" BTW) is lacking...

My predictions....I think he'll do something significant again with his solo stuff, another SS cd and yes....another Journey album....the lineup I still fathom to be undetermined (I've got high hopes....yeah....Don't stop believin' baby...hehe)

If Butterfly and Believe are any indication of what to expect, I think it will be lousy.
Which is odd, because I find both Shine (a near masterpiece) and Tall Stories (a true masterpiece) to be excellent through and through.

bop

Postby Eric » Fri Sep 23, 2005 10:28 pm

1) I don't think after how successful this tour was "that not doing Journey
anymore" is an option for Schon.

2) Soul Sirkus is not going to be anything more than a side project, the
music just doesn't catch most people's ears to be honest. My younger
friends prefer Generations over World Pplay even...

3) This band DESERVES a hit again.

Just about every interview I read includes some statement that Joureny will return. But is it only going to be for touring?

It will be more than a "side project" in Europe. There seems to be a lot of love there. It will be interesting to see what a 2nd CD is like. But in the US it will stay Journey first.

That is absolutely true. But what is Journey willing to do to get one? They are releasing the CD and the single near or after the end of the tour. Journey wants to take a break after the tour. There will only be minimal touring next year. I'm almost positive Journey has not approached any TV shows. Journey cannot rely simply on word of mouth to garner a hit! it appears to me that Journey are simply throwing the CD and single "out there" to see if it will stick...but nothing sticks these days without work!
