Dallas dvd: Sink or $wim?

Excluding yearly touring revenues, 8 years into this lineup and counting and the guys have only one succesfull selling product to their credit: the certified Gold-selling Vegas 2001 dvd. This actually inspired Neal at one point to consider ONLY releasing dvds from here on out.
Here's my question for you-

Now that the market place is innundated with Perry-fronted Journey dvds, will the casual fan still feel like gambling on what is (to them) essentially an unproven entity (the new lineup)?
Or will Dallas '05 be greeted with the same consumer-apathy that "Generations". "Red13" and "Arrival" all similarly encountered?

Journey 2001 sold well, in part, because there was no other option. There were no other Journey dvds in existence. Now that there is a choice between Perry dvds and the largely unheard current group, who will the casual listener buy?
Perry?
Augeri?
Both?

Personally, I'm buying both.
So what do you think is gonna happen?

If the question is which will the casual listener buy, I would say the Houston DVD. Then again, Sony's done a pretty decent job of promoting it and getting Steve Perry out there in the press to talk it up. I wonder who will be releasing the Dallas DVD? Will they give it away for free at the European festivals next summer? Seriously, though, I think that die hard Journey fans will buy both, but the market for the Dallas show will depend largely on how it's promoted.

I'm gonna say swim. The budget won't be there package/promtion wise to lose dough so they'll finish in the black shrinking Neal's financial hemrhoid of SS.

Guys, Journey survives because they are good enough to play the material, and good to enough to produce new material.
Journey has an incredible core base..always have..Like Bruce and the Dead, Journey is right up there.

If promoted, it will sell.

Hell, the '01 dvd was not promoted (and don't quibble, folks. compare it to Houston dvd hype) and it sold loads.

With the exception of an entire tour, videos taken from it and played on VH1Classic, it being shown on DTV, and, of course, the BTM being shown at almost the same time....with clips from the DVD. Yeah, there was no promotion.

The new DVD won't sell squat because either Journey or someone lile Sanctuary will be releasing it...and there is absolutely NO promotion to go along with it...it won't even sell as well as the 2001 DVD.

The only way I can see it selling anything in the US is if they start a tour on the day they release the DVD. Otherwise, nobody but those who follow Journey closely will even know it is released.

I'm talking mainstream publicity. They also did NOT tour behind that dvd.
Further, I know no one who had (or even HAS now) DTV or VH1 Classic... the BTM was in advance of Arrival, 2 months BEFORE arrival and 9 months before that dvd came out. the clips of it shown on btm made no allusion whatsoever to, say, "from their upcoming (well, sort of, in 9 months) dvd..."

There were no newsprint, tv or radio ads. the thing sold gold on its own inertia.

Most of that is true. But you had BTM talking about Journey...getting their name out there. You had a new CD so there was interest. There were NO other Journey DVDs available. The DTV thing was pretty big exposure. I know many people who "stumbled" across the "new" Journey because of that special. I am not sure VH1 Classic was even in existence, or what it has to do with the conversation. But HigherPlace and All The Way were shown on VH1. However, those videos were pretty much AFTERTHOUGHTS for Arrival. There may not have been much "Journey's new DVD" advertising, but there were a lot of reasons why it was a visible product when it was released.

Let's not forget that besides the diehards, there are several thousand CASUAL fans who have been to a Journey concert since 1998, so there are plenty of people out there who realize Journey still exists, especially the younger generation who have been attending Journey concerts in large numbers the past couple of years....so I think the Dallas DVD will do well, at least as well as the 2001 DVD, if not better. It probably could do alot better and so should GENERATIONS, but we all know that Journey's marketing and promotions department completely suck in this area. I don't know how or WHY the guys just sit back and accept this, the way it is....??

I think the casual fan would prboably buy the houstin dvd.
I think alot has to do with promotion,
I never see surrent Journey cds/dvds at target,
If they are they are the older cds.
i havenlt gotten the hosutin one as of yet,
I loaned the greates hits dvd to someone.
I am looking forward to the 2005 dvd.
Hope they got some good stuff on the dvd.,
would love to see the 2005 dvd and generations
promoted alittle better,

At the time i had DTV for the NHL and NFL and MLB.. I also frequented BT,ugh, and must have copied about 75 tapes for people..I charged 7 bucks...2.50 per tape, 5 for shipping...no letters from Mgt..as I wasn't making money...

That simply isn't true because of what I said above.

The new DVD will sell clay because it isn't on a major label and Journey will either try to release it themselves, or on a small label like Sanctuary. So, I expect the same results for this DVD as we have seen for Red 13 and Generations - not even going gold.

If you took all of the active posters on all of the Journey forums on the internet you would probably have less then 2000 people. That's not nearly enough to make it go gold. If that is all who buy it, then it will sell about as well as Red 13.

Think about it? Arrival 2001, was well over gold, and the band has many newer fans, and is even beter than then..plus you get another hour...

Isn't that the show where they felt it necessary to hire strippers to come to the front row and act like they wanted to have Journey's collective babies? Leave nothing to chance I guess, but the Houston DVD proves an amazing performance trumps cheesecake every time.
