Pics from Charlotte - Journey & Def Leppard

Postby Jeremey » Mon Jul 17, 2006 12:17 pm

Here's some photos from Saturday's show, thanks to Melinda Rykbost (Keyboard player Jim's wife). Sabrina and I went to the show thanks to some last minute opportunities and a big thanks to Crit & Michelle for putting some things together for us! I'm not going to take time to post a long review of the show, but I'm glad I went. My wife Sabrina is a huge Def Leppard fan, and she had a great time. Journey was definitely relegated to "opening" status, this is a "co-headlining" show in name only - Hence the half-stage setup and Windows Media Player graphics....It was tough seeing the band relegated to opener status, and in my opinion, having seen the band 3 other times in the past 4 years, they were doing whatever they can to get through the summer. We had seats in Section 6, which is almost directly behind and to the right of the soundboard, so the sound was pretty good, but the acoustics at Verizon ampitheatre were horrible. It was an interesting paradox, watching Journey and Def Leppard back to back, and knowing that there are so many parallels between the history of the two bands, but knowing the different roads that they've both taken.

Here's the pics!

When you get a chance Jeremy, would love for you to expand on that statement. thanks for the pics...

There was an overabundance of manboobs on stage last night! You have to admire Phil for his dedication to the care and maintenance of his six pack, but for the most part I was reminded of the pickup basketball game in "Along Came Polly!"

I mean that it looked as though Journey, if represented as a sleek state of the art battleship, was at sea and wounded in battle, they would be running the bilge pumps & steaming back to port at half throttle to get patched back up and send back out to sea. This is just my opinion, and not intended as a slam against anyone else here or in the band. They're doing an admirable job of making the best of a bad situation.

The guys from Journey wisely kept their shirts on....When Jeff first came out in the white shirt I thought Steve Augeri's wardrobe had finally come back from the cleaners, but halfway through he went back Soto-style to the Stones tee.

Thanks for taking time out to post these photos for all of us Jeremey.
I think my fave is the one with all the Journey men up front and it looks like Neal was blowing a kiss.

If this post doesn't look right this time I give up

LOL... I was just looking at the pix and thinking "Man, those guys *really* need to put their shirts back on." Phil is definitely in the best shape, but he's still a pasty white brit! LOL! (And, excuse me for going all girly, but WTF did Sav do to his hair?! Ugh!)

The shirtless scared me too! funny how we were all thinking the same thing!! On top of that, I said the same thing about the white shirt on JSS. The Stones shirt is him, good picture!! But all this body conscious/fashion stuff aside, what did you think of JSS as front man, Jeremy??

I've seen Jeff perform with Soul Sirkus and now Journey....He did an incredible job with Soul Sirkus, the material was suited for his voice, and the heavier music suited his more hard rock stage persona. As far as Jeff fronting Journey, props to him for stepping in and allowing the band to continue on with the tour. There was a lot of excitement over the past week that Jeff may be the new front man for Journey and Augeri would be out of the door completely. From what I saw on Saturday, I don't now believe that would be the case. I think Jeff's got far too much going on in his own career to allow his voice to get damaged by nightly Journey material. I understand Jeff performs all the time and he's in great vocal shape. But I also know that covering material that you are capable of covering and covering material that you adjust yourself to cover is not suited for long term vocal health. I performed in a cover band several years ago and trust me, while I could easily perform Led Zep, Guns N Roses, Alice In Chains, and Judas Priest, it wasn't where I should have been vocally, and it did take it's toll.

Thanks for your insight. I've always thought JSS was not a good fit for Journey. We shall see what happens in the future. Is it worth shelling out a C note for the show?

One thing to remind everyone about Def Leppard is that they do not draw all that well on their own anymore. The "X' tour did nothing at the box office. That said, they have done extremely well the last 2 times out with the benefit of Bryan Adams and now Journey. Make no mistake though, they aren't selling many records these days and need help on the road themselves.

Thanks for the pics Jeremey.
