Another Charlotte Review

Postby jrnysc » Mon Jul 17, 2006 11:16 am

Ok. Let me start by saying I have been watching Journey ALMOST every year since 98. I am a 25 year die hard fan, and have heard Perry once, Augeri many times, and JSS once, last night. Here is my opinion. As for the show, OMG!!!! I could not believe it. I have never heard Deen live, either. This setlist, with the rain falling on the lawn in Charlotte, is a memory I will never forget. This show was the bomb. I will now say, having seen first hand, without reading reviews both ways, that Augeri will not return. This is IN NO WAY a slight on him, but this band is better than ever. They were laughing, having fun (Jon Cain included), and tight as hell!! JSS is a true showman, and those who say he cannot hit the high notes, I'm not sure where they get that. He once in a while would pull that mic. back and almost show the crowd he was about to hit one. HE HIT THEM ALL!! He pulled back from nothing. Anyway, had my wonderful wife with me (who has seen Journey 4 times now, and agrees with everything I have said so far), and we were both disappointed with DL. I saw them on the Hysteria tour, and my wife has never seen them, so she was excited. Now, for anyone who knows me here, I respect everyones opinion, and don't get into the arguments, but Journey OWNED Charlotte. Now, we were on the lawn, and I understand sometimes it depends on where you are. Long story short, Journey was spot on all night, and Def Leppard's sound STUNK from the lawn. I would have to wait for vocals on most songs to know what they were playing. Once again, I love them both, but I was disappointed with Def Leppard. There was a group of DL fans beside us (6 I think), who said themselves they wished they had seen more of the Journey show. They saw only 2 or 3 songs. They even said they did not understand why Journey played first last night. At any rate, take this review for what you will, but Journey is back and better than ever. They POUNDED DL off the stage in Charlotte!!

Thanks for that jrnysc! Did I see Jeremey was there also?? Did he post a review somewhere?

Thanks for your review, jrnysc!

When I went to the Jones Beach show, DL kicked Journey's ass. So glad they've got their game back with Jeff!

Thank You jrnysc for taking time in your day
to type this review.
So nice to hear when a fan is pleased with what's
being offered on stage.
Sorry DL wasn't up to the step of it, maybe it was their "off night"

I promise I haven't come here to be a wet blanket but would the people who were at the show please download the boot from Charlotte (there's a thread further down the page with a link) and come back and give their comments. I've just listened to it (it's excellent quality) and I'm totally puzzled. It is truly embarrassing to listen to in places and just doesn't square up with the rave reviews. I'm beginning to wonder if JSS is a hypnotist on the sly!!

I saw JSS in Tampa. It was a great show and I had a great time. But, didn't feel it was the Journey style with JSS up there. Would I see him again? Absolutely because he has a great voice. I would have liked to have seen him in SS. Really hard to not be too critical of any band knowing what we read on these message boards because we get more indepth information (depending on how much you believe to be true).

I attended an Ambrosia concert several years ago when Dave Pack was still with the band and I remember several concert goers making statements that they thought Dave Pack was dead. Again, my point being that the average concert goer just wants to hear the hits and usually doesn't care who is in the band.

Just my 2 cents....

I would not be above admitting that I had imbibed a bit before the show (and during), so I wasn't so much listening with an overly critical ear. JSS did fine. The crowd was into it, but it was afterall a Saturday night. Still the show was great. If you go in thinking a certain way, you will probably listen to reinforce what you already think. I would say go in open minded and just enjoy the show.

Very much agree DerriD...

Besides, if anyone stole the show in Tampa it was definitely Neal Schon. He gave the crowd everything they were there to listen too.

Journey on~

I was at the show on Saturday and I'll tell you this, Journey simply rocked. Now I'll be the first to admit, it was my first time seeing them and I've always been a casual fan only. In fact I've always leaned towards Survivor. The fact is they put on a great show. JSS was outstanding and brought life to the place. It was great to see a guy seeming to enjoy the chance to be up there as much as he did. Dean sounded great on the stuff he sang and I'm not sure of this bootleg, but I can tell you that the live performance was awecome.

The place was jammed and it had to be a near sellout. Traffic was crazy, and it was just an awesome feeling to see those two bands playing to such a response. DL rocked as well, but I'd have to give the clear edge to Journey. I did think it was funny, that while it was my first Journey concert, I felt familiar having seen the majority of the band a couple of times in the 80's as Bad English (which also rocked by they way).

At any rate, take it from a Survivor fan, you guys should appreciate what you have. I'd give anything to be able to see Survivor sing in a venue packed like that, full of energy and power. I saw them last year in Charlotte playing in the street for free, and the audience was me, some really large woman and a homeless guy who just happened to wonder up. So maybe it's not the Journey of old, but I'm telling you...it could be a lot worse.

Thanks,

I was astounded at the venue. The show was sold out. There were over 20,000 people there. Just 2 years ago, Def Leppard couldn't sell out the Roanoke Civic Center, and just 8 months ago Journey was playing 4000 seat venues. I was blown away at the crowd. Although I have to give the edge to Def Leppard for the show Saturday, I agree there was a lot of energy for Journey.

I read on another board that Charlotte was oversold by 50 tickets, 19,000+.

Not too shabby at all.
