New Journey sounding album

Postby G.I.Jim » Thu Jul 20, 2006 1:24 pm

Hey guys, this is my 1st post. I am a keyboardist/songwriter and a long time Journey fan! I am just wondering what you guys(and gals) would think about a new album in the vein of Journey? I have written a lot of stuff in the last couple of years that is definitely influenced by Journey, but I'm just curious if you think there might be a market for it? I know that Clear Channel radio has this country on lock-down against any 80's sounding music, but I'd just like to hear some feedback from other fans. Thanks!

I'm one of the few, the proud, the stalwart melodic rock fans!

I'd love to see radio take a bit of a twist and go for more of a melodic/progressive direction. Go for it, by all means.

I'm only 18 but practically all I listen to is Journey, Boston, Van Halen, Foreigner, Bob Seger, etc. and I've recently been getting into Toto, Asia, Yes, etc.! There's people like us out there that would appreciate a Journeyesque release, and if you wanna go for the 70s/80s sound, do it. :)

Trying again from scratch, this new board screws me for
pretty postings!

I would love to hear a more 80's rock sound
coming from the airwaves.
However when I tune in it's always Eminem and
his likenesses that I hear.
Probably has something to do with how close I am
to Detroit Michigan though :?

I agree about Eminem (Or however the hell you spell it!), I just haven't gotten into any bands except a song here or there since 92/93. With the exception of course, of the odd comeback albums here and there. I miss turning on the radio, and hearing a shreddin guitar lick, or vocal harmonies stacked to the max! As a keyboardist, most of the songs changed after the 80's to stripped back pianos or organs. I love those sounds as well, but there's just something special about a well layered keyboard/synth sound.

Bon Jovi is one of the few bands out there that always seem to stay ahead of the radio, but in my opinion, they gave up the sound that made them famous years ago. They're still a great band, but just don't sound the same. I just wish that they'd give other bands(like Toto) who have great albums a chance!

Too bad your not closer! I'm always looking for other musicians to colaborate with. That's probably where I get the most inspiration for songs. Do your vocals sound like anyone out there?

I'd say a mix between Tommy Shaw, Joe Elliot, and YES..STEVE PERRY. lol. I can't play guitar while singing Journey stuff though. Only background.

Have you written many songs Escape79? If so, what would you compare them to? Just curious, because I have written songs entirely of the net with other musicians.

I've written a lot of lyrics...some dark (Early Creed/Metallica type stuff), some Porn (Pour Some Sugar On Me type), and the obligitory lost love songs (Journey Raised On Radio album.lol) , and some "Revenge" songs (Ode to Ex BITCH g/f's).I write a few riffs and solos on guitar here and there...but they never seem to mesh with they words I write. lol.

Don't feel bad about them not meshing. I've written for years, and some songs come naturally, but others have to be forced out! I haven't really found a method for the madness, but I just get better as I go. It's a never ending learning curve, but I just try to come up with a situation from life (or just my imagination) to get started. From there, it will either take off into something or end up in the trash! Just keep pluggin away at it, and eventually something will come out of it. Maybe working with another musician, or writer is what you need to get you going in the right direction. It has helped me a lot.

I've recently taken up guitar playing and songwriting.... can't get the singing part down though. :P

I like to think my stuff is really similar to Jackson Browne, Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, etc.... but I dunno.

To Journey/Survivor---- I do have a Survivor album and make sure to listen to it.. it tends to get lost in the never-ending shuffle of my melodic and heartland rock. :( I love it though.... especially "Backstreet Love Affair," "Oceans," and "Rebel Son."

"Oceans" is one of my all time favorites. "Man against the world" is another song that's way up there in my book. Beautiful! Never been a big fan of Seger or Springsteen though.
