Did Journey ever appear on SNL? Anyone know?

Also, I realize that the show is a shadow of its former self, but do you all think it would be a good idea for them to try to play SNL?

I think it would be great exposure. It couldn't hurt.

At this point any exposure they can get on a credible show is a good idea.

Is SNL still credible, though? That show hasn't been that good in about 15 years now.

I'd change ur quote to this Sherrie. They need all the exposure they can get. Never mind whether a show is credible or not.

Oh I know it's not what it once was, but it still gets a lot more viewers than that stupid Blind Date show they got time on before. They were on the CBS Early show once in 2000 or 2001 too, but that show doesn't even really have any higher viewership than SNL. Everybody either watches GMA, Today or the cable news shows. They also need to do a lot better than they did on those shows, but I have no doubt they will with Jeff on board.

I didn't see either of the Blind Date or Early Show appearances but someone told me Augeri wasn't too hot on them. I did see his version of Liberty on VH1 & I was appalled. Not exactly a good way to promote their replacement for "the guy w/the prominent nose" that used to sing w/them, huh? Augie just didn't have the pipes for these kinds of live appearances. I guess in concert w/all the crowd noise, it just sounded better or wasn't as noticeable. I wonder if Journey deliberately didn't pursue these kinds of appearances &/or turned some down? I just hope opportunities come up again because I think w/Jeff's pipes, personality & looks, they might get some attention.

I didn't see the Early Show appearance either, but when the people on BT started making excuses saying their sound was off and such I knew it had to be pretty bad. The Blind Date thing was just a disaster. I'd like to see them get the GMA Summer Concert series next year. You may be right about them not doing the TV thing anymore because it didn't work out so well for them when they did.

I've got the video of the VH1 version of "Liberty" and actually liked it. Augeri didn't sound fantastic but I don't think his performance detracted from the tune. The only thing I really noticed was that he was butchering the lyrics.

Catherine, it was a really cheesey show. I don't know what network it was on because I only saw a tape someone sent to me of it. They set up blind dates for people and on one of the dates they went to a Journey concert. At the concert they got to meet the band. The girl was a real ditz and the band didn't act much better. They did World Gone Wild and it sounded horrible. The audience was shown with bubbles over their heads saying things like "That's not Steve Perry".

15 years? It was very popular when people like Will Ferrell and Jimmy Fallon were on it not so long ago.

I think any exposure would be good, but SNL usually tries to get young artists... just this weekend I saw that they had My Chemical Romance. I can't remember the last time I saw a "classic rock" band on that show.

Every year people say how its not as good as X. 15 years ago people were saying how bad it was. Its still good, nut you have to realize that not everyone is going to think each skit is funny...I mean if they are making fun of a news program you've never watched that isn't gonna make you laugh. The first show of the season was terrible...but the last 2 have been fine. I suspect the first show sucked because that yahoo Dane Cooke hosted.

The answer to the question is : No, Journey never performed on SNL. "Open Arms" showed up in one skit where some dude made out with that nerdy Catholic chick who always falls down...that's as close as they ever got.

I grew up never having seen the first few years of the show. Since seeing some of the earlier shows, I realize the show was better before I started watching it regularly. It has been going steadily downhill ever since the first few years.

I'm not so sure SNL is the most credible place either...especially given they had a more obvious... actually much more obvious to the point to where they got caught red handed. It was some female check and she was singing one song when you heard the tape play something completely different. Both her and the band looked dumb after that.

I'd rather them appear on one of the Late Nite shows....like Leno, Letterman or Kimmel (and actually Neal appeared on one of those shows doing guitar some years back, but forgot which)

I think he was on Leno doing "Big Moon" after the release of "Beyond the Thunder", so that would've been '95 or '96.

Oh I think it's really embarassing. He is flat & sounds awful. He cannot hit notes & is really straining his voice. On several notes he just fades out as he just can't go there. From the first sentence the way he hits "mountains" is terrible. That whole first verse is too low for him. Then some of the high notes like "free" are too high. Most of the song is outside Augeri's range. & yes he fumbles the lyrics several times & u can easily catch the look on Neal's face when he fumbles "round & round". It's basically a disgrace.

Here it is on YouTube:

Compare it to Perry singing it. Well don't. There is no comparison.

I think Jeff might be able to sing it. That guy hits notes real low & real high with ease.

I agree somewhat on the rendition of Liberty not being the best (I know..being more polite), but my big thing was that it seemed like SAwas well... it seemed like there was not the intensity, energy, emotion, or something along those lines that SP easily punched into the song. This one area where we can all agree JSS would conceivably bring to the song. JSS can definitely bring the intensity and energy the song calls for. As far as range, everything I've heard from JSS has been mid to high range... not sure if he could do low like that and sound right. But that may be just lack of knowledge on my part.

Just watched it again and to be fair, there is no comparison of anyone other than Perry singing that song. Regardless, Perry's take was a studio take, not live on a VH1 program. Anyway, other than Augeri terribly butchering the lyrics in a couple of places, I still like that take.

Oh boy. I think JSS excels on low notes. That's where the true depth & richness of his particular unique voice comes out. I'm not as familiar w/his catalogue work as some here to easily pick out a good example (w/out listening to them all again which I certainly don't mind doing, but it would take a while). Maybe someone else can give a good example quicker than it would take me. But low is Jeff's home court, IMHO. He plays really well in mid & high too but outdoes himself in low.

Journey has never been on SNL, but I remember seeing them on the ABC show Fridays. If I'm not mistaken, Rollie was still with them at the time. I think they performed Lights and Wheel in the Sky, but I may be mistaken about that. It's been over 25 years.
