Sorry. Perry isn't affected. I mean Deen. He strives to sound like Perry. As he has said "steal from the best!"

- but many post-Perry tracks were a bit shapeless at times, don't you think?

No, not usually. Mostly everything was written with the hopes of radio play and the songs reflected that.

TNC - I just realized that I misunderstood you - so I edited my reply to ask whether it was possible that we're actually hearing Deen's authentic voice - but that quote suggests that we're not...

Didn't Herbie Herbert make some disparaging remark about how Journey lost their ability to structure their songs properly? Actually...now I come to think of it...he was talking about TBF....

I remember Deen saying in one of his interviews that he begged to sing ABL & SA handed it over. I think that he really puts his heart into it but not in an over the top way...he sounds like an observer who personally understands the story. I don't think he sounds at all like SP on this (unlike his concert singing which is dead on), but the "feel & mood" is strongly SP/Journey TBF.
What I find funny is that there are so many differing opinions on what "SOUNDS JOURNEY" and what doesn't - if we are gonna go that way, then ABL sounds very Journey/TBF era to me.
