They all play with a click in their in-ear monitors. Deen wears them, as does everyone in the band. Think of them as ultra-expensive ear buds.

OK, technical question here because I always wonder: What exactly does each member hear with those ear pieces in? What does Jeff hear? What do Neal, Deen, Jonathan, & Ross hear?

Thanks, I'm always fascinated at all the technical stuff too. My brother was in a band for a few years, saw lots of his shows but they didn't use those ear pieces, just the bare necessities they could afford, lol.

i play drums in my band "Water" and from time to time we use thoes, in ear monitors. they are pretty cool. i tell the sound guy what i wanna hear, for me i want to hear bass nice and loud, vocals, (especially mine) and a littlle guitar. it takes alittle bit giting use to but they rock. You can set them up with what ever you wanna hear. Im sure that all of them have totaly diffrent mixes.

They each have a different mix. Obviously JSS needs more keyboards and guitar, whereas Ross would probably want more of Deen's drums. Some band members in other bands have little (if any) of certain members of the band in their monitors, only getting what they need to play their parts and not cluttering their monitor mix with things they don't really need to hear.

As an interesting sidenote...on the commentary for Meat Loaf's "Live In Australia" DVD, he talks about people asking him what it was like to sing with the orchestra behind him, and he jokes that he didn't even hear the orchestra until he watched the footage, because he didn't have them in his in-ear monitors.

ear monitors

Postby hoserama » Wed Dec 20, 2006 10:13 am

Having heard all the ear monitor feeds...here's what i can tell you:

JSS: High vocals pretty good band level, pretty nicely balanced. Moderate level of guitar
Jon: All keys + loud click. literally nothing else
Dean: All drums + his vocals + minimal JSS + loud click
bass: loud bass + decent jss vocals + drums + click (no guitar)

from what I can tell, Neil doesn't use ear monitors? can anybody confirm?
