Let's see JSS answer these

Postby Rockindeano » Wed Jan 03, 2007 3:39 am

Knoxs' questions were a little on the softside...

Christ Knox, take off your wifes panties Rolling Eyes . Talk about softball questions?

Here are my ten questions to Soto.

1) Triple down the line scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth to take the lead, or solo jack off Rivera in ninth?

2) Friga in all white, or paisly blue?

3) Perry or Mercury? (Bet he won't touch this)

4) Landing strip or shaved?

5) Pro or College?

6) Bush (either one) or Clinton?

7) Conventional or Back Door? Laughing

Cool Tall Hawt Person or Soto Pops? ( I can't believe I typed this shit)

9) Cordless or wired?

10) Andrew or God?

11) Naomi Watts or Jennifer Anistan?

Those are the questions we fans want answered.

As much as I love Brian May, the other guys in this list top him easily. He is probably more innovative than the others but, technically speaking, he's not in the same league. Yngwie can play slow and melodically and he is a monster rhythm guitarist, but he needs to show more of the melodic side. I'm not too familiar with Howie Simon so I won't comment on him.

Anyway, Neal is one of the most well rounded guitarists I can think of. Plays several styles well. Plays rhythm well and, as a soloist, is the best all around, in my opinion. He can shred with the best but plays to fit the song when it requires it and has just tons of memorable solos.

Howie played in Jeff's solo band and I think was in the later Talisman line up.

Saw him a couple of times with Jeff and he rips ass

I had the pleasure of seeing Howie perform across four tours of duty with JSS and, including the Queen cover gigs, he is one of the most rounded guitar players I have ever had the pleasure of listening to - from heavy to delicate, melodic to rip-roaring rock, pretty damned good in my books, And the combination of Schutt and Simon - phenomenal.

PS: Never saw Howie do the Talisman stuff, would have liked to.

I'm with you Jeremy. Thing about Neal, great soloist, Great feel. But when he shreds, you always know you're going to get that fast billion-note run and than that bend at the end of it. Typical Neal. Does it all the time.
With Brian, he does a LOT of different stuff and a lot of different styles. Listen to some of the horn parts he played on some of the early Queen albums (seaside rendevous I think was one of those) and more. Neal's great and Brian's great, but I think Brian's more well rounded as a guitarist. He's definitely more versatile. Playing fast does not a great guitarist make.

I would probably have agreed with you about Neal until I started collecting his solo albums, which IMO show him in a far more versatile light than his Journey material.

How do you compare the 4 when the judging criteria is not advised. If you were to judge it on the basis of the ability of one of the 4 to play material that the others couldn't play, then I'd have probably gone for Yngwie, as he's got some very technical stuff - having said that i've seem Howie cover some Yngwie stuff with Jeff

This is so true. It's great to have that in your arsenal to pull out at just the right moments, and achieving the perfect balance of speed and melody is what makes a STELLAR guitarist, IMHO.

Yeah, Neal is the king of holding a note just long enough, then blistering you with speed.

All the 'horns' on Seaside Rendezvous were sung by Freddie & Roger....

True. The guitar horns you are thinking of are on "Good Company" from the same album.

Go buy/watch the Classic Albums for A Night At The Opera. It shows all! It solos both the "horns" from SR and the "horns" from GC.

The solo from "All Dead, All Dead" has to be one of the most intricately layered and beautiful guitar solos ever. Not to mention Brian's beautiful piano work.

JSS, great job on "Save Me" from the Dragon Attack tribute album. *thumbs up*

I'd take Brian May over almost anyone on the planet.

But I don't think Neal was ever into the same kind of guitar playing as Brian was. Neal has had to change his playing style somewhat from Santana to Journey and then to his solo/side projects, but he's always seemed content to be a fairly straightforward guitarist, just plugging in and playing whatever he was supposed to. Whereas May was constantly getting different tones and experimenting with guitar sounds and whatnot. Personally I find May's solos to be more interesting melodically, but both of them are great players who've written some great rock tunes over the years.

I'm not sure I entirely agree with this. Admittedly I'm not a Brian May expert, although I've heard most of the usual Queen stuff. However, when I saw Queen with Paul Rodgers aabout 18 month ago two things stuck me. First, I didn't think Paul was a good mix singing Queen material. His bluesy voice didn't gel well (IMO) with the theatrical dynamics of many Queen song - and I say that as a Paul Rodgers fan who has seen him on every tour he played in the UK in the past couple of decades.

But the second thing that struck me was that Brian's guitar didn't seem to gel well with Paul's singing when they did the Free and Bad Co songs. It just sounded like the same Queen sound covering Bad Co. where I was expecting something a little more sympathetic to the original songs. Maybe that concert was a bad example, but the impression I was left with was that Brian has a signature sound and everything he does sounds pretty much the same.

Maybe that's being a little unfair, as I do like Queen and they are one of the few bands who didn't rest on their laurels but progressed and took their fans with them.

On a side note, when you talk about getting different tones and experimenting with guitar sounds, one vastly underrated guitarist is Alex Lifeson from Rush. He has spent a lifetime squeezing out new sounds from his guitar and, like Queen, Rush are another band that continuously progressed throughout their career.

On ur side note.....I totally agree....Alex Lifeson has been underrated......dont know why he is not mentioned more often.......he's a great guitar player.....and Geddy Lee is at the top as a bassist....but their drummer...dont know about him!  j/k......he's the best!.....Rush= 3 awesomely great musicians! 8)
