In the other thread, Andrew said this before he closed it:

I'll be PMing Deano shortly. This is simply unacceptable.

He is right. I admit I was a dickhole. I am profusely sorry and agree it shouldn't have been made.

I have apologized to Andrew, but won't to Monker

Let Me Try this Again

Postby infinityplusone » Mon Jan 15, 2007 3:17 pm

37 year old male here. Journey’s been my favorite band since ’84-’85. Never got to see them w/ Perry but have seen every tour w/ Augeri (sometimes 2x/year), two with Soto this summer, and was VERY fortunate to catch Soul Sirkus in Alexandria, VA last year.

I’ll go on record with my prediction: Journey has a 20% chance of a new hit single on adult contemporary radio, but 80% chance of going platinum with their next album with Jeff (and a 100% chance of continued highly successful touring). Of course I want nothing more than better odds on the radio play, but the reality is that radio SUCKS so badly nowadays… “classic rock” only plays the oldies… and it’s just about impossible for a band from Journey’s ‘era’ to reach that level of play again. But maybe, just maybe… Soto is such a dynamic, exciting singer… I could see them cranking out some tune that’s catchy enough, and Journey-esque, enough, that it might get picked up on the Mix 107’s of the world. Maybe.

But another point: Going by the transcendent shows I’ve seen with Jeff (yes, I said “transcendent”) and lately, lots of seemingly random pop-culture nods… Nowadays, if you asked the _average person_, I’m betting the reaction to Journey would carry a bit more reverence than it did even 5 years ago. So, if nothing else they’ve gained true classic, timeless status (finally!). So next time some asshole makes a snide reference to ‘dinosaur rock,’ my bet is they’re more inclined to be thinking REO, Toto, Foreigner, Styx, Saga, etc etc. Whereas Journey will now garner a little more props, albeit grudgingly. Anyway, if you can’t get the brilliance, and now, timelessness of “Don’t Stop Beleivin’” you’re an asshole or a Rolling Stone writer, most probably both.

Point is, they reached some level of respect, I think, in the mass pop-culture. As far as relevance goes.. well, if any one person can bring that back, it’s Soto. But if that doesn’t happen, I won’t care – I know I’ll still have many more kick-ass Journey shows to see.

Great post Infinityplusone!! :D I think you're dead on spot there. They've got the best chance at becoming a Journey of the caliber that they were with Perry that they've had since he left. With the right kind of management and PR there's no reason they shouldn't have at least as much chance as you predicted to regain some of their relevance.

Rolling Stone

Postby infinityplusone » Thu Jan 18, 2007 4:51 pm

Yeah, I think Journey never got above 2 1/2 stars in any album review...
Be interesting to look back on the early 80s artists that they heaped so much praise on (in contrast to our "corporate" rockers)... See if anyone knows who they are today.

Todd Rundgren, anyone? (Don't get me wrong, I dig him too, but you can just see him getting 4 1/2 stars, while 'Escape' pulls in a measly 2 or something). Gee Rolling Stone, for a guitarist you've never mentioned in a favorable light, Eric Clapton and Carlos Santana must have known something you didn't.
