People who hate Journey...

What are your opinions on them?

When I find out a person doesn't like Journey, here's what I learn about that person;
- They have no respect for good music
- They had terrible parents for not exposing them to enough decent music
- They don't understand the true concept of a good tune

- Never got laid in high school...wait a minute. I didn't either.
- Resent people who love life and live it to the fullest.
- Are born with the recessive Cobain gene which prevents them from being able to distinguish off-key caterwauling, melody, harmony, syncopation, and chord changes.
- Go to schools like Vassar, Oberlin, and Smith.

LOL I'm probably going to get flamed but okay. Seems like people get flamed here no matter what, so why the hell not.

I didn't like Journey most of my life. I thought they were garish and cheesy and over the top. I thought the vast majority of their songs (and other songs from similar bands) was self-indulgent freeform exploration of the genre. I'd never been big on that style of music. And Steve Perry's voice was a bit ... uh... too theatrical for my liking.

And I consider myself a music nut. I just liked what I liked over the years. And trust me, that ran the gamut. Jackson Browne to Eminem to Meat Loaf to 2Pac to Blue Rodeo to Erasure to Toby Keith. My tastes are ALL over the map. I own cowboy boots and du-rags. LOL

Over the years, one band that never really fell out fashion for me was Survivor (with Jimi Jamison). His voice just thrilled me and the melodies thrilled me. I also was a HUGE Van Hagar fan and appreciated Def Leppard and some mid-80s melodic metal. I like tenors. I like haunting melodies and as pandora.com says, "aggressive male vocal". LOL

EDITED TO ADD: several sites I went to kept calling Surivor "The Poor Man's Journey" and that made me laugh. I never equated the two!

Anyhow, I found myself here, at this site.

Flash forward a few weeks, and I now call myself a Journey fan. I'm still VERY new to it -- haven't yet heard SA or JSS but Steve Perry's voice REALLY grew on me, and I can hear the perfection in their musicianship compared to other bands of the era. It's still a tad garish, but I like garish. I am a huge Jim Steinman fan and that guy is nothing if not garish personified.

It's a gradient thing. I like what I like. Some of the Survivor albums (cough*Premonition*cough) don't do a damn thing for me. But some do.

You know EVERYONE in my life whom I've told that I'm a new Journey fan has kind of chuckled at me. My boss, who LOVES all music out of the 70s said it best. We have a terabyte of MP3s at work, and I asked him if he had any Journey in his personal collection, as there wasn't any in that mass of music. His one line email back to me said, "Uh no. Journey sucks."

I emailed him back, "Uh, you'd think so, but you'd be wrong."

However my 'epiphany' came on one balmy November night in Orlando, Florida when I went to the Jorney/Def Lep gig. I was hooked.

There are many, like me, who are simply ignorant of Journey and the bands like them. Our musical education is lacking. However there are many bands who I have only heard one or two songs from - doesn't make me a bad person

No, sure doesn't. Now that you're coming around, we'll even accept you. You will find that the folks here are Journey disciples. But with good reason. As you begin your fledgling endeavor into the incredible world of Journey music, you will eventually have an epiphany. It will beacon upon you to seek the true knowledge that makes you whole. That knowledge will be your guide into your new life. A life that is dedicated to one God. Naaa, I'm just fucking with you. Glad you're here. Have fun. Journey rocks.

Actually, count me in the group of people who thought Survivor and Journey sounded similar.

I think that liking Journey is very easy. Musical snobs typically never tell you the music they actually like, instead they point out music that 'sucks'. Easy being a critic huh? Journey has that 'Corporate Rock' title, so they are an easy target for the snobs.

If you've ever known any hardcore musical snobs, they frequently poo poo any band's success. More often than not, they do play in some sort of band or at least know how to play an instrument, but of course they aren't successful because they aren't "going to sell out." Yeah right.

So is it any wonder there aren't any more Journey haters out there?

i "hate" (cant stand for some reason), the grateful dead, pink floyd, stone temple pilots, rem, hip hop unless its kid rock, .........i dont understand the big deal with so called .. "songwriters",, dylan, petty, springsteen , ect ect.. why are they "songwriters" and jonathon cain labled a piano player,, because he doesnt play acoustic?

I guess I took too many years of music. But I knew I did not have it. Ever try to write a song ? More than likely all you can think of is something already written. Bands should be judged by writing ability, performance by both the band and the singer and having that singer whose voice was so distinct that one note and you knew who it was. Then the hits and huge crowds to buy cds and attend concerts will follow. For me it is Journey as the # 1 total package,Aerosmith, Foreigner,Styx,Boston,Survivor,Def Lepard,Led Zep,Starship,Heart and even back to 3 Dog Night.and I am sure I missed someone. How many hits and records sold by these groups? How many concert tickets sold? These bands are why the R N R HOF is a travesty with people stuck in the 50-60's music being in charge. How many are in 1 or 2?

Could be all of the above,but it's also a matter of perception I guess.Just like Whocares said,people like or dislike certain band/music for their own reasons,depends how it affects them.

I'll never understand what's the big deal about Nirvana,for example.I think they sucked big time,I can't listen to their music.
But if you ask the Nirvana fans they'd say Nirvana was the best thing that happened since sliced bread.

Well, I wasn't unaware. But more to the point uninterested. I had LOVED Journey back in the 70's/80's. All the way up to TBF. But then when I saw them on the Today show, with the new guy ( SA) I lost interest. Not that I thought SA was a "bad" singer- but he wasn't SP. And for some reason- he really turned me off of Journey. Can't explain in it words- SA just grated on me for some reason.

Flash forward to this past tour- and especially the show Uncle heFTy mentions- and all I can say is "I'M BACK"!!!!!!!!!

( Even my Hubby enjoyed them- and he's no where NEAR the music fan I am!)

I am one of them. I remember hearing them growing up but never really got into them until last year when I saw them with leppard. Can I use the excuse that I was too young to know what good music really was? Journey was in their prime when I was 5-10 years old.

uh Steve Perry's voice too theatrical, and Meatloaf's isn't.....uh....WTF? I've seen Meat live and the only thing that sucked was his stretching a 6 minute song to 15 minutes. If he'd just belt the damn thing out and move on he could have easily gotten another 3-4 songs in the set. UGH!
